    I remember doing some 25y ago a 300+ mile one-day road trip in late 60's VW minibus (the next version that had single piece windscreen), it was a relief when it was over... no seatbelts, struggling engine, very ineffective brakes and and very obviously minimal crash safety. Steering was as in this one, and gear selection was lottery. Not to forget very noisy, tinny interior and slippery vinyl seats. The car was then probably worth a thousand or so. As an once in lifetime experience unforgettable though!

    I had a '66 Beetle when I was around 20. It didn't like the freeway either, and it had been hopped up with the engine from a '70s Super Beetle, so it had something like _60_ horsepower, woooo! Josh Nixon But you _felt_ like you were doing Warp Factor 12, because at 55 the engine would be going _WAAAAAAAAA_ like an F1 car from before they went to the boring-sounding turbo hybrids. (You got a similar experience from '60s big-block Pontiac engines with the old-fashioned two-speed Powerglide automatics. The slushamatic kick-down on the Interstate on-ramp didn't really do much, but it felt and sounded like you were jumping to hyperspace. :)

    My memory on VW buses was that they were super reliable. The VW bus was the only transport for Beer , Whiskey and Wine or many years for UMBRIAGO's (means drunkard in Italian) liquor store in New Jersey. My dad managed that store from the late 1950's to the late 1970's and the only type of vehicle used was an air-cooled VW bus and there was only one vehicle, that would be used for 5 years or so and traded in for a new VW air cooled bus. What kind of use did it get? A LOT. That 1 square mile area was listed in the Guinness World book of records back then as having the most pubs and taverns in a square mile in the entire world. UMBRIAGO's was the main supplier. The place is still there but under new ownership and a different name. The Hell's Angels chapter had events a few blocks away and UMBRIAGO's was a supplier. Deliveries went on in any weather and that VW van when loaded down with beer and whiskey went like a tank in the snow. Booze is the vital blood of the hard working blue collar working class of New Jersey.

  • @kimhorton6109

    Wow. Don’t even think these are reliable. I’ve had two of the older versions before I had any idea how to care for any vehicle. If you drive one daily they REQUIRE bi-monthly valve adjustments. If neglected they will suck a valve when they get hot and will require new heads and wven more extensive work. My dad bought me a pair of engines but didn’t tell me how to avoid the problems I was into. I’d still have that ‘65 bus or have passed it down to one of my kids. Very safe cars partly because they are so slow. Before the SUV you sat high and could se around you.

  • @fishhuntadventure

    Did this video ever bring back memories. My first car was a '58 micro bus. 36 hp engine, crash box tranny but I had so many great memories in that thing it was amazing. I got it in 1964 when I was seventeen years old. A friend spotted it in a little town they were passing through in Arizona on their way to Colorado for a deer hunting trip. On their way back they talked to the guy that had it for sale. My dad paid the guy $150 and they went back and got it (I lived in La Mirada California at the time). They towed it home and my friend rebuilt the engine (It had sucked a valve) Put new heads on it, a cylinder kit and I was on the road. The most fun I ever had. Thanks for sharing this video. Sure does bring back some very fond memories!

    I had a '63 15 window Deluxe with the corner windows. But I had a 1776 with a radical cam, Chevy valves, and dual Kadron 40mm single barrel carbs. Put the motor in, synced the carbs and set the timing, went out in the street and launched, popped a little wheelie. As long as nobody got in front of me I could run up the pass from Santa Clarita to Palmdale at 90 mph at about 1/4 throttle. And still got 22 mpg. Drove it daily for 6 years and put 150k miles on that first motor. Got tired of push starting it when it was 6volt so changed the lamps and put a resister on the original radio, and threw a 12 volt battery in. With the 6volt starter in there it spun it so fast it almost couldn't help but start. I also wrenched on it like at least 3 days a week. A lot of that restoration but a lot to keep it running too. Early buses put you in the most comfortable driving position.

    What a great show and Jay is a great guy with no apparent ego at all like so many other stars. I was suprised to see that Iglesias thought his VW bus couldn't handle freeway driving. I had a 1967 VW bus set up exactly like his (sunroof, windows along edge of top, etc.) with the only exceptions being that mine was red and light tan and my windshields didn't flip up. When I got married in 1970, I drove it all the way to California from eastern Illinois and had no problems at all. In fact, I had the back bumper reinforced so I could use one of those trailer hitches that clamped onto bumpers (when cars had real bumpers) and I pulled a 10 or 12 foot trailer with everything we owned at the time, including my 1969 Triumph Bonneville T120. Acceleration was minimal, of course, but we had no trouble on the open roads or even going over the Rocky Mountains. That was when there unemployment was extremely high so I didn't find a job so we moved back to Illinois but this time my wife drove the VW bus while rode my Triumph. I was crazy back then. It was in the middle of winter and I drove the bike in sub-zero temperatures. I remember one time when I stopped and realized that I was so frozen that I couldn't move. It had come across slowly and I didn't notice it. I had to practically be carried into a restaurant and my wife had to hold my cup of coffee for me. Unlike Iglesias, I don't recall ever having any problems with my VW bus and I had it for seven or eight years. However, the body rusted badly and, by the time I sold it, the side door was held closed with a rope tied to the armrest of on the middle rear seat. I don't remember a lot about the engine but I do remember that it had an oil bath air filter. Also, I seem to remember that it did have a generator contrary to what Iglesias said but I may be wrong or his may have been converted for an alternator. If I had any idea how much that bus would be worth today, I would have kept it. But, then, I would have kept a lot of things, some of which I just threw out but are now valuable collectors items. Hindsight!

    @Christiaan Overgaard You don't know what you're talking about. An alternator _is_ a generator, and it does indeed use brushes, though brushless versions exist (they are large though; not used in passenger cars or light trucks). Also, the earlier "generators" also generated AC current, but the method of converting it to DC output was different.

  • @MaximRecoil

    @MaximRecoil

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Christiaan Overgaard Again, you don't know what you're talking about. Automotive "generators" (used in the mid '60s and earlier) and "alternators" both generate AC which is converted to DC before being output to the battery: "Despite their names, both 'DC generators' (or 'dynamos') and 'alternators' initially produce alternating current. In a so-called 'DC generator', this AC current is generated in the rotating armature, and then converted to DC by the commutator and brushes. In an 'alternator', the AC current is generated in the stationary stator, and then is converted to DC by the rectifiers (diodes). "

    I had the '67 model of this van when I was going to college in San Francisco. Paid $800 for it in 1975. Lots of Bondo on the front end! So much fun, but not at all reliable. Took my grandmother to So Cal in the van once. There was a short that caused the windshield wiper to stop any time the brake was applied. We were going down La Cuesta Grade outside of SLO on that trip, in the rain. Steep grade that required a fair amount of braking. I had a box of fuses on the bench seat next to me, and (because I had lots of practice) was able to swap out, on the go, the wasted fuse for a new one so the wipers would keep wiping. Grandma asked, "Is everything OK...?" "Oh, yeah, Grandma.... Everything is good." Once, I parked it on a steep San Francisco hill, heading downhill. When it was time to go, I could not get the van to back up. Not enough weight over the rear end. When I'd ease the clutch out in R, it just kept rolling forward, pushing into the car in front of me, which pushed that car into the car in front of it... I got someone to climb on the shelf over the engine, which gave it enough weight to grab the asphalt and back up. Got out of there like a bat out of hell (poor college student, you know, sorry) - at least, as fast as it could go! So many memories with that van: Grand Canyon trip, driving in Phoenix with a busted clutch cable, engine rebuild in Oakland, push starting... Great show, Jay! Love it and your pal!

You had to know how to work on the thing to get anywhere in it. Crazy thing though. You could break down in the middle of nowhere and the next guy driving by would have a spare set of points or whatever it was you needed to get it going again.

Thank God I was unconscious at the time when it all happened. In the end I only broke my leg as my Stetson hat protected my face from the impact of the glass. Anyway, I swore to never ride in of those VW Vans ever again. They have no weight on the front tires and that's how my friend who was driving at the time lost control in the rain and the front tires lost any sort of traction and we spun out and ended up crossing into the other lane right into oncoming traffic. I'm happy to just watch the video instead!
