Full credit to Madrid for the comeback. But a spectacular match was ruined at the last second by a terrible breach of offside protocol. Regardless of whether the Bayern player was marginally onsides or offsides, the whole point of the VAR assisted protocol is to let situations like that play out and retroactively determine if there was an offsides or not. That leaves such a bad cloud over an otherwise wonderful match. Absolutely atrocious breach of protocol by the linesman. And to anyone out there trying to downplay the incident, the linesman apologized to Tuchel and De Ligt after the match. Credit to the linesman for taking ownership of his mistake but he 100% messed up big time.

I mean definitely not regardless if it was onside or offside. If it was offside it's a total non-issue. Just "punish" and give feedback to the assistant about the incident that he shouldn't raise the flag so quickly.

The error was calling the offside too early, but that is not a goal not given. Madrid defenses stoped playing and Lunin didn't even tried to catch it. We don't know what could have happened.

That's precisely the problem though. Bayern had a very good goalscoring opportunity taken away from them. It was a failure with both the linesman and the ref. The ref has the power to ignore the linesman and wave play on - which is what he should have done - but he chose to blow the whistle

The bigger question is how comes in the last sixteen game against Leipzig how comes Vini Jr was allowed to grab the throat of Orban with both hands and not sent off and now Nacho did the exact same thing against Kimmich and got away with a disallowed goal? This is the smallest controversy I've ever seen. The Idea that this had anything to do with corruption is idiotic. Do I think there's corruption in football yes, however this is not an example when viewed in its totality, which it must. The Ref missed the push to the face which resulted in a goal, an error, VAR rightly overturned it. So Madrid did not get the benefit of "cheating" in this instance. The Linesman called offside in Madrid's second goal which did not favor Madrid. VAR rightly overturned it. The Linesman & ref called an offside when they aught not to which resulted in a stop of play. The problem is it cant be overturned. People are pretending this happened in isolation, terrible decision but corruption or stolen? stop it. As if this Munich lineup go an extra 30 without getting peppered.

at the end, the best team won. consistency is very important. Even if Bayern scored the second goal, Madrid was going to score the 3rd and 4th respectively. we can't blame Madrid for the referee mistake. even the fault involve kimchi and the Madrid player with the disallowed goal, both of them were holding each other.

Growing up id always wondered if/how football would end.. this season has been the beginning of it. Corruption will ruin football

European football can learn something from the NFL when it comes to officiating. If this were the NFL there would've been an immediate investigation into whether protocols/standards were broken.

Everyone’s talking about the offside at the end but there was another potentially controversial moment in the first half with two balls on the pitch but the ref played on. Makes no sense how the ref let play continue for that yet with a tight offside decision the whistle gets blown.

This might surprise you but according to the current rules that is allowed. The referee sees the second ball in madrid's half but decided it wasnt interfering with the play on the other side of the pitch. If that would have been a goal, it would have been allowed.

The official failed in that regard. 2. The ref could have overridden the assistant's flag call and allowed play continue, and then see if VAR is needed afterwards as the case may be. He failed in that regard. 3. Bayern DID NOT score a late goal whatsoever (This is where most people get it wrong). A goal was never scored. The moment the referee blew the whistle (whether wrongly or otherwise, is inconsequential), the follow-up action(s) by the player(s) became null and void. The referee did blow the whistle so Bayern DID NOT score a goal in that circumstance. 4. The referee and his assistant robbed fans of football the chance of knowing what would have happened if he hadn't blown the whistle in a haste. 5. No one knows for sure what would have happened if he hadn't. 6. Maybe Bayern would have scored. 7. Maybe Real Madrid players wouldn't have momentarily stopped on their strides and thereby neutralize any threat. 8. Back to point number 6. No one knows for sure. 9. It's a free world, perhaps. You are free to spin the details however you want within the limits of your bias. I won't be paying you a visit for a fist-fight. Feel free.

It's strange that they followed the rules for Madrids equaliser didn't for Bayerns goal... very weird. To be fair I think the keeper would have stopped the shot but he didn't bother because the ref wrongly blew the whistle. Silly sausage.

It’s not that strange at all, these are two completely different linesmen 😂 and the ref was right outside of the box (thus he could see it for himself).

It seems there's alot of betting going on in these games bcz of some of these decisions that alter the games...

It was a mistake by the linesman & the referee. Everyone makes mistakes. But at this level? It’s a career ending mistake in many jobs.

De Ligt made the decision to shoot after he, like everyone else, heard the whistle go and now he’s manufactured a scandal out of what is just another common offside error by a linesman. As an Arsenal fan, I can still recall RVP getting a yellow vs Barca for shooting after the whistle. De Ligt could (and maybe should) have gotten the same.

There was no goal. After the whistle blowed, goal keeper and defense laid hands down. No sense calling VAR, since refferee called offside(right or wrong, what ever followed makes no sense). It was no offside, stopping the game at this point was not a right decission, so what? Refferee decissions like this particular one, or lengthening additiional time to 14 minutes, favor you or go against you, centering discussions on this is a bad losers relief.

But then why do we have VAR?

If this happens once ok , we can call it a coincidence, but when this happens on a regular basis like it does in favour of Real Madrid, we need to ask an explanation.

So no one will talk about the fact added +14 mins in a game that was for 6min max and Bayern was the team losing the time???

The only wrong call was the linesman lifting the offside flag. If he hadn't done that, Madrid players would've not stopped chasing the ball and even if Bayern scored, VAR would've disallowed it because it was an obvious offside. So why the drama?

"Don't be flag happy". But isn't that what pundits have been demanding - "Why did he not raise his flag? it was obvious, Someone is going to get badly injured". It's a compliment to assistant refs that they are so often correct. But now we have a clear case of why the directive IS correct. I remember years ago, Man Utd vs Porto. Paul Scholes scored and was deemed to be offside. He was onside by a country mile. These sort of mistakes happen. Supporters of other clubs will, undoubtedly, have their own examples of such errors. Shocking that with the directive in force and actually 3 stages of decision making - assistant, referee and VAR, that this was permitted to happen.

The offside rule needs to change been saying it for years its called football for a reason and what i mean by that is I watch nearly every week where they draw the line when the the ball is played and for example the the striker and the other teams centre half for example both players feet are in line but the strikers hand or head or whatever is over the line so it's offside is ballocks the offside rules needs to be from where your front foot is that's why it's called football and not headball or hand ball I'm sure any knowledgeable football man would agree

Munich players were quite keen to surround the officials at the end due to the mistake of the linesman. I assume they also surrounded and shouted at Neuer in the same way for his mistake that cost them the whole tie?

Have you been raised in Madrid or did you become a Real fan because you want to belong to the winners? Real fans that are not even from Madrid are usually those kids that have no self confidence and only became Real fans becuase they are afraid of being not good enough and therefore need to identify with something great.

Ref bottled it. Replay shows the second Real goal was clearly offside, and Bayern's second wasn't. Farcical.

It’s funny how all these outlandish mistakes only seem to benefit the likes of Real Madrid and PSG. I hope Dortmund clap Madrid. I won’t bother watching, all this sheer incompetence and/or cheating isn’t for me. It’s beyond a joke. Wish I’d watched the Oxford game instead.

Real always make these fouls on set pieces & especially corner kicks. Rudiger & Carvajal actually put arms around players waists & push them backwards to make room for a player to run into. 1 time Rudiger actually picked a Bayern player up & turned & dropped him down. They're coached to do these fouls. And if they are ever called for them it's treated as incidental contact. There's nothing incidental abt putting 2 handed palms under someones chin & shoving their head back to allow access to loose balls. Nothing incidental abt wrapping arms around someone's waist & picking them up & moving them. These "dark arts" they claim Madrid are so good at are nothing short of fouls that they use to gain advantage, aka:cheating. And the ref situation never ever happens to where it costs them the game at the closing stages of matches. Always to win the match. I guess it's win by any means necessary. But sometimes dignity & integrity are winning too. Mia San mia

Ive no interest in real madrid bayern or english players scoring loads in foreign leagues if playing for the best 1 or 2 teams. Not the first wrong and corrupt decision in the Champions League this season. Paris would have been eliminated from the group stages but for a bent corrupt team of match officials

1. VAR would have most likely ruled him off, he looked marginally off even on the still image. 2. The Real Madrid players around the ball and Lunin stopped playing after the whistle. So it doesn't mean that he wasn't offside as he most likely was and it doesn't mean that Bayern score if the ref didn't whistle. Stop it, really isn't that big of a deal.

The protocol is to NOT raise the flag, that's the point that is being made. You, I and everybody have no idea if he was marginally off or on because the flag was raised and then the referee messed up by blowing the whistle which means VAR cannot get involved.

@@jasontripp3726 I understand all of that but people are making it a way bigger deal that it actually was. Had De Ligt's shot bounced of a defender or gone wide it would have been whatever. The only reason why people are making it a big deal is because the ball went in and likely only did because Real Madrid had stopped playing.

As a leeds fan I enjoy nothing more than seeing Bayern screwed out of the European Cup 😂😂😂
