    When I learned to play basketball in general and "a screen" in particular, I was told to run up to my man, plant my feet and freeze. Edwards not only gave Marshall a hockey style 'hip check' but also used her arms to push her, making this an obvious offensive foul. I know there was a lot of emotion here but it was so obvious I just don't see how anybody can argue the call.

    There was many wrongs on that one screen that they call illegal even in NBA. First it's a moving screen, then too wide stance, then arms at play too as you've mentioned. Just gotta choose whatever to call.

    Blatant foul, feet, body and elbow all moving out to strike the defender. Easy call. Also, as the clip shows in the last 3 minutes of the game, that was the 3rd pick on Marshall by Edward’s. The first two showed her feet and arms set. They were clearly going there again, but the last one was just too sloppy and obvious. Don’t blame the refs, credit Marshall, she anticipated that 3rd pick attempt.

    Excellent presentation. I love the production quality. BUT, AT 3:09 I don't think it could be a backcourt violation because the ball was deflected by Edwards/UCONN toward the backcourt. Unfortunately, Kate Martin did not know that at the time. She could have safely recovered the ball in the back court with no violation. Basically, if the defense knocks the ball into the backcourt, you are allowed to go get it.

    @@JusBellAndAri I could ask you the same thing, clearly stating you don't even know what a play is. Uconn had a play ready to make one more attempt to get ahead, which failed due to the moving screen. This singular play would've changed the outcome of the game if they did it right. You also clearly don't know about refs these days. They are horrendous. But I also have to say reffing is hard.

  • @christophercripps7639
    @christophercripps7639Ай бұрын

    Congrats on a GR8 presentation of the nail-biter end. Paige B saying s.t. like one play doesn’t determine the outcome is so true: UConn forced turnovers late. Failing to box-out is another. Caitlin C’s inbounds off Paige B. is an example of another key play. Gabbie Marshall would’ve been bouncing up&down, arms waving, face to face with Caitlin C. if Gabbie been defending. I’ve seen enough “tape” of Gabbie M. defending in bounds plays. Aaliyah E. was moving both feet; perhaps if the left had been set and only if the right away from Gabbie M. was sliding no call would’ve have been made. (Earlier Gabbie M. was leveled when colliding with an essentially stationary Aaliyah E.) And likewise with a little less shoulder lean and less size disparity perhaps there would’ve have been no call. Gabbie M. has made a career slipping past screeners (often larger) to “keep on the hip” of an opponent - “relentless” is how I recall Kate Martin described Gabbie. Gabbie M. is quite quick and cat-like, and, persistent, which, prob was on Aaliyah E’s mind. Just go back and re-watch “The Block” (actually two big D plays - that block and a “pass defended”) near the end of the Iowa v Nebraska BIG 10 Championship Game. As I’ve said before, Aaliyah E made what would’ve been a nice “chip block” on an EDGE rusher …

    That’s right coach you DO have to get better at not setting illegal screens. You seemed to mean that as some kind of illusion to ref favouritism but in the end your player cheated and was rightly called for it. Play clean and you can complain. Play dirty and you have no moral ground to stand on.

    Legal screens require: 1) Screener is set. AE was moving. 2) Feet at shoulder's width, max. AE's feet were sliding from 5'-6' apart. 3) Elbows held in at side. Not. 4) Defender not actively impeded. AE (6'3") leaned into GM (5'9") and sent her 4' sideways. GM's feet landed well outside 3-point arc and she's turned 90* by impact. The screen was illegal 4 ways, obvious, done in front of a ref, and done when it affected play with the ball in a critical moment - 1 point down, seconds to go, with the ball. That's when you try to NOT foul. Fouls are for when you don't have the ball. Some say there were similar illegal screens earlier that weren't called but no one shows any. Even the ones they post from other Iowa games are not like this one. Defenders get past and stay with the ball. The contact AE puts on GM could easily be called a foul even without a screening attempt, though it might pass if away from the ball. This happened where the ball and play was. 18 million were watching. It was going to get called. "The refs should let players play and decide the game". Rules and refs exist precisely because players shouldn't decide outcomes with indiscriminate play. Even rugby has them, even though it's often hard to tell.
