Imagine how sad sarutobi must have felt when he said that his only regret was not being able to kill orochimaru, his own student

crazy thing about Naruto is that Gaara's backstory is super sad, yet I wouldn't even put it in the top 5 saddest backstories from this anime... that's how messed up/amazing this show is

I rewatched Naruto with a friend who had not seen it and man it was so painful at this part. Especially with the little finger innuendo prolonging it, it was just so bad lol.

The thing is the fight itself was top tier especially this early in the series but the reputation it’s left behind on the community has been negative simply because of that scene

They weren't. It's anime time. That encounter took about a minute in "real" time. They just kept cutting back to it as a reminder that it was happening, and also to fill time for the episode.

It is painted. That is a Sand Village custom. Even Temari and Kankurou paint their eyes and face. You will explicitly see that in Shippuuden episodes.

just to clear up a misconception, substitution jutsu isnt automatically a log, you swap yourself with a near object, since they are mostly surrounded by trees they swap themselves with logs, but we have seen other kinds, like Orochimaru and Sarutobi both used mud since they were standing on the ground, Naruto swapped Moegi when she got kidnapped by transformed Iruka with a scarecrow, during the bell test Kakashi simply swapped with one of Naruto's clones, there are plenty of variants :)

Naruto has a way of making you feel for its characters. It has a lot of light-hearted moments, it makes you forget that this is a world that's been ravaged by wars and shinobi aren't all these colorful characters with cool abilities. Some of them are very much just human weapons living the consequences of the world that's been left to them from previous generations. Cannon may be a reck after the Gaara flashback concludes. It really is one of the more heartbreaking backstories of part one.

Honest it takes Hiruzen Sarutobi so long to die, and as the story goes on yall will eventually hate him. As more is revealed you'll see he was just a foolish old man after he took the hokage hat back.
