I always loved the bit where McMama mentions that Derek sees things in black and white, but that Meredith doesn't. Then later in season 7, when Derek finds out Meredith messed with the Alzheimer's trial, he tells her that he doesn't understand that she can't tell the difference between right and wrong, to which she says "I don't think things are always just right or wrong". Great foreshadow! :)

Ok but it's not like he does either. He's not straight and narrow. He was married left his wife in new york, met Meredith in a bar, and slept with her and ended up falling in love with her. He slept with Meredith while at the prom with his wife. Therefore he don't see black and white either.

I love Meredith’s monologue here, it’s so genuine and it’s dramatic but delivered so low key…I’m dark and cloudy. Ellen Pompeo nails this.

This is the only time Derek mom and Meredith have had any interaction. 16 seasons later and Mcmama hasn't come to visit Meredith and the kids yet since Derek died. Maybe seeing them will bring up feelings and emotions.

I wanna find that person who appreciates being myself more than always being a little ray of sunshine. Just like Meredith, I'm not always chatty, and I don't wear a constant smile on my face. I'm kind of a melancholic person, and that doesn't mean I'm depressed or anything, I simply just feel my true feelings, and don't force myself to be happy when I'm not. But sadly it seems like no one likes that attitude, everybody wants a person who's always optimistic, and sees everything bright.

Not to say everyone who is chirpy and happy is fake, it's just common that's all and to be chirpy all the time...that isn't realistic. You'll find someone who appreciates your personality, even on the hard days.

Oh trust me you BETTER that way, I’m a very socially awkward person and very anxious when I’m the center of attention and basically around people who don’t even know me, but whenever people speak to me or even look at me (including my family sometimes) I make myself so happy and bubbly even tho most times I’m totally falling apart and I don’t cry in front of people unless it’s my bests friend.. honestly you really rather be yourself and not fake it like I make my self.

If raising a doctor is the measure of how good a parent you are then Ellis Grey was a wonderful mother too. I don't think what your kid does for a living is the best test for how good a parent you are. Derek's mom did seem better than Meredith's but she had her weaknesses and blind spots too.

I agree. I liked Izzie at the start of the episode, helping Meredith appear bright and shiny, because Meredith wanted Izzie to help her do that; so Izzie was being a good friend. But in the end Meredith chose to be honest, and while Izzie is allowed to feel a little irritated that she tried helping Meredith for nothing, that look of disappointment and shake of the head at Meredith being honest was uncalled for.

Surgeon 101 well it’s no that they don’t understand her as much as all of the problems that she caused because of her addictions. I think that in a recent episode (15x04)Amelia even says I don’t understand how my mom put out with me. Like if you had a daughter who was a drug addict and she has had a lot of relapses and she wanted to get married to a guy to whom she’s only been dating like for less than a year you’ll be like “you’re out of your freakin mind”. It’s not that they don’t understand her it’s just the past.... her past... plus Derek’s mom was right since they got divorced like what? Six months later?

I just love all these connections.

I hate izzie in that last scene so much when Meredith confessed her true self to Derek’s mother and she shook her head disappointed in Mer. She should support her in being herself and not lying and being a fraud of who she is, if I were mer I would feel sad that my friend wanted me to be someone I’m not.

Meredith wasn’t really cold like Cristina,the first seasons she was sweet she had her issues with her family but she always acted like a positive person with Izzie,George,Alex and Cristina so I don’t think Izzie wanted so much to change her I think she wanted her to be more open with strange people like she was with her friends

@@hannacal8347 Yeah I totally see that now and I can find the first meeting funny where Izzie reminds her to smile and all that, that part I get because I probably would've done the same thing if my best friend is meeting her boyfriend's mother for the first time. But the part I don't like is when Derek's mother walks away and izzie shakes her head in disappointment as if shaming her and not respecting mer's decision to be herself. I get what you mean but just in this last scene if it were me I'd go make my friend feel better and comfort her instead of making her feel worse than what she's probably already feeling.

Derek’s mother said she gave birth to 5 doctors; but we only ever knew Derek and Amelia as actual doctors. I thought the other 3 held just regular white collar jobs

You do realize she cheated on him, right? How do people just look past that? They were married for a long time, it’s not right that she gets to fuck someone else and still consider him family. I don’t know why he gave her a second chance, I would have divorced her ass right after finding her with Mark. Because that was not a drunken mistake, she clearly thought about it for a while and made a conscious decision to sleep with him and stay with him for months after. If your significant other went and fucked someone else, would you forgive them and stay with them without resentment? Would your family forgive them for hurting you?

I respect that you love Addek, you’re entitled to your opinion. However, there is a lot of onscreen dialogue and events that supports McMama’s claim. When Meredith asked Addison why she married Derek she said “I knew he would never hurt me.” Thats safety, not love. When Derek talked about marrying Addison he said “it was the next logical step.” Thats conformity, not love. They were great friends and family in a sense, but neither one was happy in their marriage, which is what lead to his using work to avoid her and her turning to Mark. Also, Addison and Mark didn’t just have an affair. She stayed in New York and moved in with him. She only went after Derek and tried to rekindle their marriage after she found Mark with another woman.
