The modern industry can learn more than ever from Mr. Yokoi's philosophy of Lateral Thinking With Withered Technology. Video games sorely need more people of his creativity and ingenuity

The modern industry is built purely on money (considering how expensive and difficult it is to make current video games) Creativity and ingenuity are reserved for the indie market

The Wii could sort of be considered that same philosophy. They used almost the same hardware as the previous generation which was cheap and well-understood.

I would argue that this philosophy has lived on with Nintendo, with the DS, Wii, 3DS, and now the Switch. I'm glad to see the Switch doing so well, largely because it is so different and such a huge risk.

Still angry at Nintendo for treating Gunpei so badly after Virtual Boy failed. It wasn't his fault, it was Nintendo themselves for rushing out an unfinished product, to compete with the release of the PS1, since the N64 wasn't ready yet. The Virtual Boy was supposed to get color screens etc. Gunpei brought them a lot of success and money, with the Game & Watch and Game boy line, and then they just throw him under the bus, cause of their own mistake...

That was always an out in case the DS bombed. Even within Nintendo a lot of staff were not on board and felt the DS was the wrong direction and that they should stick to a straight Gameboy design. If the DS had failed they would have immediately regrouped and put out the next Gameboy.

***** I'm not butt hurt I'm just pointing to the fact that Milton Bradly had not release Microvision, when Gunpei started working on the game and watch, and he probably never even heard of it. In any case the Microvision was a poorly made machine with only 12 games. While novel and an interesting feat the Gameboy actually did revolution gaming. It's kinda like the Model T, sure there were cars before it, nobody bought an they were all shitty but they existed.

I don't think something like the Gameboy could work today. Obviously I don't mean the same tech, but how far behind the times it was when released, tech-wise. The Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear were vastly superior systems (the Lynx was actually in the same ballpark as the Sega Genesis power-wise but didn't have the resolution to show it). It would almost be like a company releasing a handheld today about as powerful as the GBA with no backlit screen to compete and winning. Everyone has become so technology-obsessed it just couldn't happen.
