    The irony of that whole thing is that as soon as Atari made a working prototype of Pac-Man, the company decided it was close enough and that's what they massed produced

    Sadly the current owners of the Atari brand is using it for NFTs & Loot Boxes, not to mention that the 2020 VCS console is a scam, not paying its architect Rob Wyatt (who also worked on the OG Xbox & PS3) I just hope that one day, someone will come along & give the brand a reboot, it looks like it’s in dire need of one

    Along came ATARI... then had their ass handed to them buy NINTENDO! Pretty funny Nintendo wanted Atari to release the NES in the states for them and Atari passed. That's what you call a giant fuck up!

    D Wreck I honestly think it was a smart move for Atari NOT to distribute the NES, though something good could have come from it, I am not sure what though, but look at what Nintendo did to up and coming toy company Wolds of Wonder when they did distribute the NES for them... they left them with a loss, and the company had to close...

  • @Jshaw71

    It wasn't just a Nintendo vs Atari thing, if you paid attention, it was a series of bad decisions before the nes was out, even in japan that lead to Atari's demise...

    Jshaw71 That is not the point that was trying to be made. The point was if Atari distributed the NES here, it would have saved their asses. But they declined and paid big time for it.

    CF-105 Games It may not have been the point that you were trying to make, but that was mine, I doubt very seriously that if Atari had promoted the nes, in america, it would have been good for them, look at how they (nintendo) treated worlds of wonder, once the NES was a hit, they turned their backs on world of wonder, and left them for dead, and die they did, sadly...

    Thanks for the uploads, was nice to find these online, always nice to look back at game history, But, I am not sure what was worse, Noaln shelling off Atari to Warner Communications, or Jack Tramiel firing who knows how many staff members at Atari...

  • @LUCKO2022

    @LUCKO2022

    9 жыл бұрын

    Jshaw71 Well if Bushnell hadn't sold Atari to Warner, the VCS never would have been released and consoles possibly home video games wouldn't exist. As for Jack Tramiel without him home computers wouldn't be popular because they would still be too expensive. It was thanks to Jack and the Vic 20 later the Commodore 64 that made home computers popular. The Commodore 64 is still the best selling computer of all time BTW.

  • @Jshaw71

    @Jshaw71

    9 жыл бұрын

    I suppose that is true, about the CVS not being produced, I am not sure about tramiel making home computer that popular, but I could be wrong... I could see that being the case, the C64 being the best selling home computer, I had little doubt of that...

  • @LUCKO2022

    @LUCKO2022

    Jshaw71 The Vic 20 was the first computer to sell 1 million units, and the C64 is the known as the definitive computer of the 1980's. Apple may have created the market with the Apple II but Commodore was the ruler of the market before the IBM PC with the X86 chip.

    I saw another documentary where the programmer said he wasn't done with PacMan and Atari released it anyway. It was only a very rough demo to show management his progress. I remember hating the game but I played it anyway because the games cost $35 and back in the early 80s that was a lot of money. I should have told my parents to take it back.

    Leonard Herman is incorrect. Atari didn't make more E.T. cartridges than there were systems. VCS Pac-Man was known for that, not E.T. Atari only made about 4 million E.T. carts, at a time when there were over 10 million systems. Also, most of the E.T. carts didn't end up in a landfill.

    I'm going to have to disagree with something that was said in this program. Basically the guy said that Atari was the most bold and decimated name in the industries history and I think he's wrong. The boldest video game company in history has to be Sega circa 1989-1996 and I'll tell you why. In 1989 Nintendo held approximately 85% of the American video game market. They were an unstoppable juggernaut that broke the law with impunity and they essentially starved the competition. Sega took a beating from 1986-1988 and took dead last even behind Atari who really didn't show up to the party. Sega returned one more time to our market and from Christmas of 1989 they began one of the most effective, vicious ad campaigns in history. They took Nintendo apart like it was nothing and in doing so gained dominance over the biggest game playing region in the world. They went from 9% of the market to 65% and held that lead until mid '95 when Sega of Japan stupidly decided to discontinue the Genesis in North America.
