Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Join Tom as he makes an English wheel from an old G clamp and scrap that he has laying around the workshop.
If you would like Tom to make one of these for you please get in contact as we would be more than happy to do so For a small fee that covers the cost of the clamp, materials and time it takes. All the money will be put back into our channel.

Excellent work! I happen to know a local garden gnome who will be overjoyed that he can now start wheeling and finish building his dream car.
very cute!
Excellent! I used to teach secondary school D&T. We bought an old set of bending rolls, but I don't recall ever seeing English wheels in any of the schools where I worked or visited. This design would be fantastic for some projects at GCSE or A level, so I hope you're able to supply forward-thinking (or is that backwards...) schools. Sadly, many workshops have been converted into IT suites, making practical work a thing of the past for many schoolchildren, so I don't hold out much hope!

Yes I was a aid at contra Costa collage and they shut down every welding class in California in community collages. I went out trying to gather up many signatures in Northen California at many many shop's why it was important to keep them open. Like you said slowly they closed them gave us a little space to keep the class going but made it harder for me to get enough student's to sign up with what little the school board gave us to work with. As soon as I left it shut down. Needed 35 student's to sign up in order to have a class. We only had room for may be 20 student's. We had no accidents that's all they wanted to shut the program down. The same building they turn it into a computer learning center. I got to see the back room deal's. Collage is just a scam. I seen canclers push students into classes they didn't even need just so the teacher could have a full class.

Thanks for watching. Yeah it has lots of uses!
I have an antique one that is very much the same as yours. It has a patent date of around 1920. It is American made. The upper wheel is larger than the lower. I took it apart and polished the wheels. It works well for small pieces.

I actually have several of these in various sizes that were manufactured in the early to mid 20's. A body shop friend of mine told me they were for rolling fender lips or fixing dents around windows and chrome trim pieces.

@@Metal_shaper_tom I got them at an auction. I figured they were for metal shaping of some kind but they were rusted and didn't work. I figured they would make cool wall hangers for the garage. But, I have slowly been restoring them and putting them to use. They are quite handy when you need to do small work.

Nice! I made one bearings abd a home made clamp. 6205 top bearing and a spherical od lower bearing.
Cool for cats , dude. A guy like myself can make a useable E.W. now! Ta!
Brilliant idea Tom. I've wanted an English wheel for years but could only find Non-English wheels. The panels I need are fairly small so this G clamp will work perfectly.

Fantastic.
Now I want to make one of these
I had a similar idea but as i've not used (or needed so far) an English Wheel for nearly 40 years i didn't pursue it. However this has given me inspiration to continue with my original idea which was to use an "old skool" valve spring compressor to give the quick-release facility. Modern versions tend to be a bit flimsy but i have an old one hung in my shed so might sacrifice that........... Nice to know the idea works in practice as well as theory! ;) :D

@@521farmer Not built it as yet, too many other things on the go and these days, i can't move about as quick or for as long as i used to! Pending further minor upgrades/tweaks, i've just finished upgrading my manual tyre changer (think Harbor Freight manual tyre changer) so i can have it freestanding and sit on a swivel chair while i change the tyre. Hoping to get a video of that in use once it's finished and i'm happy with it though.

Hi-I’m restoring 2 antique Fords and I’m always looking for body finishing tools. This tool that you’ve just made is perfect for using right on the car and I will be making one for sure. The other one you made (and I have already started on) is the mini version of this made from a pair on vase grip clamps. Just want to say thanks for your excellent videos that are very descriptive and easy to follow

Thanks David, that's a common misconception, less crown actually moves the material quicker as there is more material being stretched, more crown concentrates the stretch to a smaller area.

Love this build and I'll be building one soon. Just thinking about your question regarding a quick release and have my eye on using an F clamp.
I made my own English wheel couple of years back from some bearings for anvils and some old 2 inch thick tubing that has 1/4 inch wall thickness works very well made a couple of pieces. It could be improved but I need to find more time to practice on it then maybe one day I’ll get a bought one.

It a good feeling when you make your own! We are very luck to use a large cast edwards wheel in our day jobs. even very basic ones are a couple of hundred quid so I thought this idea might give people the opportunity to make one for very little money and just your time to make it and it still produces a good result.

Fink it’s bloomin marvellous. Shamed to say when someone welds I still turn my head away from my iPad! Have a passion for Airstream vans but could only build a Basecamp with straight curved flat aluminium and acrylic windows. Think a compound curve for regular Airstream will have to wait. I’m 75yrs and need first to do course on welding. Maybe after that...

A Lancia with "a bit of a rust issue"?! Surely you jest! Good build idea. To square the rollers before weld-up, try putting straight rollers in first so that the faces meet up square, rather than fight the radius on the lower roller.
@Metal_shaper_tom

Good idea 👍 Lancia….. even the word gives me shivers 😬
What an awesome idea :) , think at the basic level of this you just need to decide on the throat size you require and go from there as plenty of ways to skin a cat haha
Looks very neat! You can actually buy little wheels, second hand at least, if you look up Stiles-Herman English wheels. They seem to have been used more for smoothing than raising shape.
That very good machine you did but can be more BIGER space to put larger sheets how much cost you or can you and time? Thanks
