FY2 Standalone vs Non Training | LAT vs LAS | Where should an IMG start | My route to enter training

When you hear about applying for jobs in the NHS, you may invariably hear people talk about FY2 standalone or locum appointment for training (LAT) posts, and it's only natural to wonder if you should apply for such a post.
So let Dr Ibreez Ajaz, internal medicine trainee, give you the complete picture of what an FY2 standalone or LAT post means in the NHS.

    A great detailed video! 👍🏼 I have a few queries on the Non-Training job posts: 1. what are the likely specialities that one can think of getting into after NT jobs? 2. being a “non training” job does that mean we are left all on our own to make decisions on patient management? 🤔 3. can we do audits in a NT job to amplify our chances of getting into a particular speciality? I hope you can help me with my queries, thank you so much! ☺️👍🏼

    1) Any specialty you wish so long as you meet the applicant criteria. 2) No. Non training just means you don't have a portfolio and curriculum to maintain. You won't be abandoned. 3) Yes.

    Every single one of your videos just gives me a bit more confidence when I watch them Thank you so much! I’d just like to know a bit more about the fy2 stand-alone programme. When the preferences are put out after the interview , will the rotations only be pertaining to those that are available at the time or will there be rotations available in all disciplines like surgery, medicine, a and e , etc. Also is there such a rotation called General Surgery ? Or is there a list of all the disciplines the NHS covers that I find somewhere ? My ultimate goal is to get into CST after doing an FY2 standalone , in addition to what you mentioned in this video about choosing OBG, Trauma Orthopedics , etc is there any specific advice you have for the route/ path that I’m planning to take ?

Apart from the education supervisor/mentor/ progress tracking and the fpcc( which is equivalent to crest) there is no other disadvantage for non training jobs? 2. You said rank is based on interview and application. What can I add to my application to increase my chances of getting into fy2 standalone? 3. If I take a non training fy2 equivalent and get a crest certificate should i join a training ct or a non training equivalent? 4. Will i be able to take mrcp if i do a non training job?

    So basically for that .5 in writing (I got 7.0) I have to retake IELTs to get FY2 standalone job...oh my gosh :'( this is unfair... Why the IELTS requirement is higher and OET is same. EDIT: Okay, I rewatched the video and now things got clear...the first few mins got me scared as I was frustrated of the thought of retaking IELTS ...I thought to get into IMT, I must need to go through UKFPO programm. So basically, what Ibreeez apu has said is its actually better if u go through the CREST pathway provided that you are dedicated.

    Thank you so much for the video. I have a few questions. 1) FY2 standalone requires valid IELTS/OET scores within two years separate from the english proficiency requirement for GMC registration. Meanwhile, FY2 equivalent non-training post does not require valid IELTS/OET if I have fulfilled GMC registration. Am I correct? 2) FY2 standalone eligibility criteria includes Full GMC registration. However, doesnt IMG only get Provisional GMC registration after passing PLABs? Should an IMG apply for Full registration? 3) Can I later still apply to specialty training post instead of the equivalent non-training post even if I finish FY2 equivalent non-training post (therefore never fulfilled UK Foundation programme)? Thank you.

  • @RoadToUK

If I get my CREST form signed after 3 months in a non-training job, can I apply for run through training (or other uncoupled training) programs? Also, if I get selected in the training program, will I need to complete 12 months in the non training job before I could join the training program in the speciality? Or can I just leave the non-training job after 3 months and start my speciality training program instantly? 2. If I do FY2 standalone, can I only get my competency signed after 12 months only? Can I apply to training programs before 12 months time? Can I join the training before the 12 months time is over in FY2 Standalone? I would absolutely admire if you could answer my queries. Thank You.

    Thanks for saying that. 1. Speciality training programs always starts at specific time of the year. More often than not it is always August. If you get into training, you will know it around May-June. So, you have to give your current non-training job a notice that you will be leaving them in August. Nothing is instant. 2. You can leave the training if you wish but you will not get any certificate without completing 12 months of it successfully.

In October 2022, I transitioned to a psychiatry resident role and successfully passed Paper A of MRCPsych. I have PLAB2 scheduled for November 10, and I plan to take Paper B of MRCPsych after that (assuming I pass PLAB2). Given this background, is there a possibility of obtaining a non-training position in psychiatry without diversifying into other medical areas?

    Thank you for an informative session. I am an IMG & have few doubts which i would like to ask: 1. Are FY2 training posts and Standalone FY2 training are the same or two different types of training. 2. Since after doing a non training job for getting CREST competencies signed, one cannot apply for Standalone FY2., is it advisable to be in a non training FY2 training post for at least a year before i can apply for a speciality training position in specialties such as Paediatrics/Cardiology/Radiology/Dermatology or a period of 6 months of non training post with CREST is also acceptable? 3. Can i apply for the training positions while i am still part of a non-training post? If yes, how does this work? 4. Can i switch departments while i am in a non-training post or do i have to reapply every time when i am switching departments? 5. Is one year of non-training position deemed enough to complete the person specifications for IMG doctors?

  • @RoadToUK

    @RoadToUK

    4 жыл бұрын

    1. The same. 2. CREST technically only needs 3 months of work. Whether or not you've completed what the form entails in that amount of time and if the consultant is then satisfied to sign it off, is another thing. 3. Yes. During the appropriate application period you submit your application. 4. If you're working under the same employer and your pay is not changing, then you don't have to reapply, but obviously you'll need to go through HR. 5. It depends on you and the specifications of the post.
