wow the sounds of the floor creaking had me emotional. imagined the wood breathing or stretching; the bones of the former trees rattling with new life. interesting to think about humanity’s impact of nature, yet how nature still “lives”.
Is it weird that I found this so fascinating?!? I’ve seen old yt videos of the different colored floor and wondered what was up with that. Thanks for the FVSC floor history lesson, Ryan!

I found it fascinating too! Great job, cousin Ryan!
Absolutely fascinating to hear the beautiful maple floor waking up and having a good old stretch after 45 years of being suffocated by paint. I love listening to my big old wardrobe making cracking noises throughout the seasons and the woody smell it gives off in the summertime is so nice. Your rink floor is absolutely stunning, thanks for sharing it’s history with us, ❤️🌳
Deb - I am getting old. I remember when your cousin Ryan was born! Yes, it's been 45 years. Floor looks great! Love the videos my friend.
Wow, interesting history. I really like the appearance of the wood floors better. Even if it's always been there, it's nice to see it exposed. Can't want to skate on it again!

I love that y'all take the time to maintain your rink floors!! Many rinks have been in poor condition for years and you just have to wonder.... A smooth floor is a calling card for rink skaters. If you maintain it, we will come!! (And likely even if you dont. Lol. We are gonna skate where we're gonna skate. Lol)

Been binging your videos as I just bought my first pair of roller skates(Sure Grip even!) after trying and failing miserably at EDC but having a lot of fun with it! Can not wait til they come in next week. Would love to see more historical type videos like this as well!
I really wish I was back home in California because I would be trying to have you teach me, I think I’m at a plateau and I need to break into some more styles

Yes! I used to be one of the volunteers as a child!
I grew up in Quebec, Canada. When the Ottawa river froze, we'd go ice skating, and then lie on the river and listen. The ice would crack and groan (scary!). Your floor waking-up sounds just like it. And it looks so tempting!
You made very nice progress in three months. I knew you could do it.
I got to tell you you have taught me so much !! You a great instructor !! And you hair looks so cute I luv it !! I keep saying I’ll cone skate but I get a lil insecure to but I’m gonna try real hard to cone see you !! Your awesome !! And thank you!!

Cool history on the floor
Amazing! The floor is absolutely gorgeous! And so is your cousin Ryan :). I hope to make it down to FVSC to skate on it some day. The sticky wood floor at Oaks Park in Portland, my home rink, has a lot of grip from the finish layer on top. It would be interesting to see how the different finishes feel and roll

Yep. Family business always relies on family and friends. That is how it is done to keep things moving along. Lots of great memories though.
Why does Moonlight Rollerway worry so much about their floor? Doesn't every rink do yearly maintenance? They say they don't allow fibers, any thought on that?
@Dirtydeborahharry
2 жыл бұрын
Sliding on Fibers can cause deep grooves in the floor. This can cause permanent damage. It has happened to our floor and we have had to remove pieces and replace them. So, it is a choice for each rink how it cares for its floor. I usually read comments from skaters who skate at rinks where the floor is a mess :( The owners don't or are unable to care for their floor. Moonlight has a really nice, smooth floor. They obviously care for it.
@supersillymonster1
2 жыл бұрын
@@Dirtydeborahharry It seems like you have to outweigh the cost vs. benefit for allowing fibers. If it's not too expensive to replace sections of the floor then you probably make more money in revenue hosting nights where the Fiberglass wheels are allowed, and then everyone is happy. Moonlight caused a lot of controversy not allowing fibers and I have to admit, I bought into the racism by excluding fibers argument. I love skating Thursday night and Sunday night at your rink because it's a slammin good time! And really good skaters I might add
I was just thinking as the flooring person went by, how it's like watching a Zamboni, if there wasn't an engine!
