    Great advice! In a nutshell, I'm 63 and I've been drawing my own cartoons ever since the mid to late 70s. I've wanted to draw cartoons ever since I was a kid. I learned on my own with influences from both known and unknown artists, like my brother and my best friend. My skills are really good (they should be after over 4o years 😄). I just didn't really know how to share them and make them work for me.

    Sure ! Ways to promote you comic strip on line and would it be a good idea to use and idea from your previous video of cheap art prints to print out ones own newsletter but with your comic strip and maybe as owner can you place it in your local donut shops or coffee shop privately owns just a thought I had. I'm a cartoonist by the way with a couple comic strips so I thought why not start my own newsletter paper full of strips.

  • @DJCoffman

    It depends on your goals. For me I’d shoot with the Manga size because if you really think about the amount of new readers who are devouring this size, it far surpasses the standard American comic page size.

    do you think simplifying my webtoon to a four page comic can work for me, it's because i just wanted it to have the feel of those early 2000s action cartoons i used to watch when i was a kid. but i want it to have continuity too would the four panel comic be enough, also would posting pictures of my process be enough cause I'm very camera shy and i can't afford the equipment. thank you for reading. PS are you going to post more videos about this i think that would be awesome.

    What you're saying makes so much sense! I've been seeing bits and pieces of the things you described here and there but you put it together in such a succinct way. I just have one question, though. Do the strips HAVE to be exactly four panels long? Cause I've been doing a series of one-page gags since early last year and the number of panels tends to fluctuate between each of them. My latest one that I'm working on now is seven panels long. Do you think I can keep doing it this way and still be successful? 🤔 Thanks.

  • @DJCoffman

    @DJCoffman

    Жыл бұрын

    I don’t think the number of panels is a hard and fast rule. But remember the part where I said the story and characters have to be connecting. For comedy or “gags”, it can in a way be easier to do if you’re funny and know how to convey and deliver a joke. The question I would ask myself if doing a gag strip is, what makes mine stand out that’s different. Why should people put mine in their daily check ins? And then I would lean into whatever that is!

  • @brandttm
    @brandttm7 ай бұрын

    I’m super curious to hear more about how you plan to adapt stories to the 4 panel strip format. Would the strips need to be humorous and self contained, or part of a larger whole (episodic)?

  • @DJCoffman

    @DJCoffman

    7 ай бұрын

    Any genre will do. For gags, yes you keep it short and within that 3-4 panels. But for ongoing adventure comics or serialized, you can see how this was by looking at comics like Steve Canyon, Sky Masters of the space force, etc. and in working “smaller” you can gain more insights from your audience faster and be able to pivot

  • @DJCoffman

    It could be possible but it would take bigger names to lead an effort like that. In my experience, most people unfortunately want to "get theirs" first and protect their own eggs instead of watching out for the community. It's a great thought! But human nature makes it difficult. The good news is, you totally don't need to work with corporations or big syndicates ever again if one should choose.

    Comparison is the thief of joy. What exactly was your purpose in this video? Of course a finished product should meet a certain standard of quality for the audience, but ultimately the value of which is for the customer / reader to decide. It's offputting to hear you go so hard on creative people doing their best to get their story out. You would have been one of the naysayers/detractors of the author of the webcomic One-Punch Man and MOB Psycho simply based on the skill level of the artist. Yet, One is an example of dogged perserverance in getting his story told and heard DESPITE people saying his artwork wasn't meeting the "standard" or "requirements" a lot of which is just personal taste. Isn't that a MORALLY UPLIFTING story? And he still seeks to improve while drawing MOB and writing his other series. I'd hate to hear what you believe about past manga works. Miyazaki? Otomo? Tezuka? Go Nagai? I'm sure with your current viewpoint you would find something wrong with them. Comics (yes Manga are comics) can be a 3 panel strip, a single panel political cartoon, a tonkoban, a graphic novel, pieces of paper folded and stapled together and the art can be as simple as stick figures. Have you ever been to comiket? I think you would be shocked at the "poor quality" being scooped up at lightning speed. Take a look at this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lquFrbKCXabTXdI.htmlfeature=shared Then take a look at Eric July's making money in comics. Maybe look at a tome of Art History and see how impressionism was looked down upon by traditionalist in very much the same way you're coming across in several of your videos. What makes you the authoritarian? I'd much rather watch you create than see you destroy other people's efforts because it doesn't suit your taste. I believe your time would be better well spent, and if you change your attitude and approach, your seeds will bear fruit. You have the skill, change or perspective and the timing will be quicker than you imagine I appreciate your spiritual grounding as well. Wish you the best.

    I don't know what video you watched, but I clearly said Manga is real and the best selling format in the world. I don't judge anyone's art at any level they are at, and if you followed our work here at Draw or Die you'd know this. So I invite you to watch our other content and streams. You seem pretty angry at me, and I hope you can let go of that. I totally love all forms of expression in comics.
