It is remarcable to hear how Furtwängler finds those Tempi differences and manages to bring them to such a perfection, as it were our "Lieber Franzl" himself giving Furtwängler the musical intuirion to perform his Masterwork to such a marvel of interpretation !

MusikPiratCH Schubert went toe to toe with Beethoven and surpassed him in several works in more (and arguably higher quality) opinions than mine. E.g., compare the Septet to the Octet, this symphony to your favorite of Beethoven's and the "Death and the Maiden" quartet to the C-sharp minor (or your favorite other one).

Mind-blowing power from the Berlin Philharmoniker. What an orchestra. What a conductor. Listening to these wartime recordings under Furtwängler you really realize how Karajan ruined this orchestra. Also, comparing both of Furtwängler's recordings, 1942 Berlin has got 1953 Vienna beat on this piece -- though even the 1953 under his baton knocks the pants of any later interpretation I've heard. But this 1942 is simply spellbinding.
