I was a cameraman for KICU at the time and did most of the Barbara commercials. On this particular day after shooting a series of back-to-back 30-second spots, my crew and I talked poor Ed into doing a blooper reel, just for fun. He asked what he should do and I told him whatever he thought would be funny. We rolled tape and Ed went to town. We all tried not to laugh out loud as it was a hilarious piece of adlibbed comedy, in fact, if my camera wasn't locked down, it would have looked like an earthquake. Your information regarding a disgruntled employee is incorrect. At the time, we had a VTR (Video Tape Recorder) with a faulty audio head that had intermittent audio leakage. Around two weeks later, the overnight air switcher had a couple of friends drop by the station to visit him. He put the blooper reel on the faulty VTR just to show them but what he didn't realize was that the pot on the board for the faulty VTR was not on "Preview". It was on "Air". At 23 minutes after 11:00 PM during the airing of "The Mod Squad", KICU viewers were treated to the audio portion of our comedy sketch. That night, my girlfriend and I were at my home watching something that I can't remember, on KICU from 10:00 to 11. Thinking that Mod Squad was one of the stupidest television programs ever produced, when it came on at 11, I turned to another station. If only I had liked Mod Squad, I'd have been a witness to one of the funniest on-air mistakes in Bay Area television history. Only one person lost his job and it was the air switcher. Funny how things work out. The same day the guy got the axe, he went over to nearby KNTV channel 11 - at the time an ABC network affiliate and KICU South Bay competitor - and got hired for almost twice the salary.

I looked for this video I did not make it. I was a little boy when it aired. In fact when it aired wasn’t this exact video, it was even worse more cussing than this one. When the commercial started it was black screen but Ed’s voice came on cussing like crazy but couldn’t see him yet. My dad was sleep on the recliner, I wanted to tell my dad but afraid he’d yell at me for waking him up and he wouldn’t believe me. In those days any cussing was so unheard of on TV. My parents then read about it in the paper, my father being Italian similar to Ed we drove to the store, naturally my father had to rub it into Ed. Ed definitely was a crook and what he said was his true feelings. I wished I could find the real aired video.

There was an earlier video he caused on TV too like 1971. Before it even began his store video I could hear the causing. It was a huge shock in those days to hear cursing on TV. He was hated and employee set him up. My family and I met him but refused to buy anything from we saw crook right away.

hey i like the "honest sale" approach. very refreshing. there's a similar commercial for a car dealership owned by ralph williams in the 70s. friendly ford i believe. that salesman even bagged on his boss. dr. demento used to play a song call "memories of manhatten furniture" (aka "ed barbara") about ed's store in los angeles in the mid 1970s.

There was nothing honest about this guy. If you came in here, you just know you were going to get ripped off with cheap furniture that you would still be paying on long after it went to the dump.

I remember Ed Barbara's commercials and how about Paul from the Diamond Center and Steven Matthew of Matthews TV/Stereo. In the Sacramento market, it was Tom LeBrie with Night Comfort Theater and LeBrie's Waterbed Warehouse. I know Tom passed away about two years or so ago. I wonder what happened to the other three guys?

Larry Lee Moniz I was a child when I heard it fresh on at the time. The cussing started before Ed came on or the commercial even started. In those days I couldn’t believe it, no cussing was aloud. He might of made a few cussing commercials because the actual aired version wasn’t quite like this.

As a teen, my friend worked at Furnature USA. Someone (probably his own son) threw a penny in his "private" toilet. Ed accused my friend of this "crime", took him by the neck and threatened to drown him in the toilet.
