The Furniture Salesman that Saved Houston: Mattress Mack

If you live in Houston, you probably know Jim McIngvale as his alter-ego "Mattress Mack." For almost four decades, Mack has been selling furniture in the greater Houston area through his business Gallery Furniture. Known for his energetic local TV commercials where the natural born huckster unleashed his famous tagline that Gallery Furniture would "Save you money," Mack grew his business from being a series of tents along a highway into multiple, massive locations employing hundreds of people.
In addition to being known for his salesmanship, Mack is also known around town for his philanthropy. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, Jim opened his Gallery Furniture locations to people seeking shelter. Every year he gives away furniture to families in need and provides hot meals during the holidays. Most recently, Mack converted parts of his main Gallery Furniture location into a trade and high school, helping students who dropped out of public school gain an education. Mack is fixture of Houston and a true local legend.

    When I was a young child my mother went into gallery furniture hoping to buy me a bed since I was sleeping on a bundle of blankets on the ground. My biological father dipped out before I was born leaving her to take care of us by herself. Mattress Mack ended up being in the store that day and he took the time to hear my mom's story. I remember him also picking me up and looking right at me asking how I was doing and if I was having fun at his store. I told him yes that his store was amazing and it seemed to warm his heart. He ended up giving my mom a whole bed set for me with dressers and everything for a huge discount! My mother was so grateful that day and would ALWAYS speak very very very highly of Mattress Mack!

    First of all I’m not religious, but they’d be so much liabilities if Lakewood open their doors and something happened. It’s was deemed to be unopen by the GD CITY OF HOUSTON. Even if the whole church was ready to open they would have been breaking the law. Imagine if they opened the doors and then something happened before it was cleared. Thousands of people could have and would have sued, because they weren’t cleared to host people. As soon as they did have clearance they opened their doors and were able to do a lot . Also I started realizing most of these mega churches have weekly things ie food kitchens, haircuts, job fairs etc for the community. Plus they give a lot jobs for the area too. This mattress guy is great but he had a lower risk high reward for his contributions. Much respect. Again idgaf about Joel Osteen, and megachurches have their issues, but they do play a vital role in the community. Media will try to tell you otherwise.

  • @Bestica

    @Bestica

    As a local Houstonian for over 30 years I’ve seen what MM has accomplished in the community and I’ve also seen what JO says he’s accomplished. I know the difference and there’s plenty of reason why the whole of Houston has anger towards JO. How that pastor handled hurricane Harvey is definitely on top of that list. I don’t recall during hurricane Harvey the mayor or anyone else issuing warnings of finding safety especially when it came to the churches. I highly doubt if JO would have opened his doors to help anyone caught in that crazy hurricane and it’s terrible flooding that he would’ve been breaking the law. 😒 no one sued MM when he opened his warehouse to HH victims and what’s a warehouse compared to a literal stadium turned church? He could’ve taken people in. He could’ve practiced what he preaches but he chose not too and only attempted to help after the fact when he faced backlash and was exposed by people live-streaming that his stadium wasn’t affected by the flooding. They were literally walking up to the doors.

He also sends guys out in delivery vans before hurricanes into local neighborhoods to pickup people and bring the back to the Gallery Furniture to wait at the storm. He brought people back here after Katrina and set them up with a place to live, furniture of course and jobs. One of his daughters is a mental health professionals (she works with COD. Having COPD myself, I’m an admirer of her) and they do a web show here on KZread talking about helping child dealing with the stress of COVID-19. Because of course he also fosters kids. If you are really old like me, you have heard the story of how it supposedly all got started. First he was selling mattress out of a van, then a local flea market. This was the 80s in Texas, so you could do whatever you wanted back then. Apparently one of the flea markets had a bear or big cat there and it hurt someone. People where fined for it and had to do community service. Local legend has it that’s when Mac found his real calling.

I remember taking a trip to Houston Beach as a little kid with my sister and grandmother, and seeing him in his mattress costume advertising his furniture store. I thought it was really funny and clever. He truly has a heart of gold. He puts people like Sam Walton and Jeffrey Bezos to shame. Mack truly wants to give back to the people in any way he can. His father was a good man for raising him that way. I hope people will be like Mack when they start their business and it gets to this level. I sure will. Mack is my inspiration. He is so kind to his workers too, and I love all the nice things like the schools and the gym. Especially the nice quotes their employees can read every day. I love how Mack is so involved and even works at the front desk unlike most company owners who just sit in a leather chair watching TV and barely doing a thing. This is what a true business owner should be doing. Working with the employees. Not sitting in the shadows all the time like some looming presence. This is what American businesses should be.

    Yeah it pisses me off that they use religion as an excuse for their own benefit. Makes the rest of us look bad. And the people that follow them are blind or are to deep in his words. Too bad he doesn’t mean them, And when he gets caught doing something bad It’s always “I am human”

    He's for real. I've been in the store a couple of times, and he's answering the phones every time. Lots of "Mack-isms" but the one that has stuck with me is a collection of 2 letter words- "If it is to be, it is up to me".

    This guy is the real deal. He opened his store after Harvey for people to just stay in after they lost everything. I don’t mean sit int the warehouse, i mean sleep on the beds sit on the furniture, literally live in the furniture store. And then got fed. Joel Osteen had Lakewood mega church closed because he “didn’t want to mess the carpet up”. Seriously. We have bought all of our furniture from him every since.

    I remember seeing him in a news report at the time. The reporter asked him about having people sleeping and eating on his inventory. "We'll have a "flood sale" or something" he replied, "We'll think of something but right now these people need a place to stay".

    He’s truly a gem. What’s beautiful about this is that this just scratches the surface of the great things he does for this city. Without fail, any natural disasters, any issue Houston faces, regardless of what is happening he is always looking to help. He just opened his stores again with warm food, blankets, and warm building for the blackouts and winter storm that has left many in Houston without. He has truly been a blessing to the city of Houston.

    An absolute legend. My family home flooded during Harvey and we lost almost everything. A few months later my parents and I decided to go to Gallery Furniture to window shop. We noticed there was a cafeteria there and decided to have lunch. When we got through the line there was no check out, they told us all the food was free. We sat down and cried because it just felt so nice and unexpected for someone to be so giving. This is a special man who has done so much for the city of Houston. We could all afford to be a little more like Mattress Mack.
