I used to hate missing movie trailers in the theater, but now sitting through 30 minutes of trailers I've already seen online is pure torture. Not to mention all the ads. I saw Furiosa at an independent theater and they only showed three and no ads. A way better experience.

The problem is that movie trailers suck now. Back in the 90s, yes it's true that they weren't online. But the trailers overall were better. Now I don't even bother to watch trailers because they suck.
The elephant in the room is that people are tapped out. It isn't just movies. They aren't spending money on a lot of things.
"I'll wait for it to stream" is a popular phrase right now.
I will see Furiosa next week. I´m in Europe, The global numbers must be better at the end. We need at least one more of these from George Miller, and more unique and powerful films like this that only a handful people like Miller can still do.
@nancykerrigan

Yeah I feel like it'll do better in Australia. Hemsworth said in an interview that this is their star wars.
"Furiosa" is one of those unfortunate cases where, had WB actually allowed Miller the opportunity to shoot back-to-back with "Fury Road," or as close as possible, "Furiosa" would probably be fairing better, and the praise it's receiving would be reflected in the numbers. But between its development hell and all hell breaking loose in Hollywood at the dawn of the 2020s, it feels very much like a "strike while the iron's cold" situation. Waiting 9 years for something that should've come out no later than 2 or 3, and leaving broader audiences wondering "where Max tho?" Lol.
I loved Furiosa the audience is nuts for not seeing this epic This is exactly the film Miller wanted to make Perfect Rumbling Pop Munching Box Office Cinema 🎉🎉🎉 I blame the audience on this

The title character of an action movie being a little girl wbo scowls isn't an enticing proposition for a mainstream audience. Imagine Terminator with a miffed child in the lead instead of Schwarzenegger. These things matter, you can't just swap everything on fairness grounds and expect the same result. On top of that, people forget Mad Max was always niche, doing much better on tv and vhs. Fury Road was the anomaly.
@kev30631

That's the problem. George Miller is out of touch with why people liked mad max. It's the car porn. Not the story as much.

Hey James, On a different tangent, perhaps talk about the best femme fatale films. Example would "The Last Seduction".
It's a shame cuz Furiosa was a really great movie. Between C○vid, the strike, and years of lackluster movies alot of normal movie goers have stopped going to the theaters as much. As a person who loves movies and seeing them in the theater it's a sad state of affairs.

Streaming. Going to the movies now has become an _inconvenience._ I remember the days when I could buy 2 movie tickets, large popcorn, drinks, and candy for $15. And a 7pm showing would start at 7:10 max. Now that 7pm movie is staring at 8pm. Watching nonstop insufferable ads, and tedious trailers. And the tickets, popcorn, drinks, and candy is like $60 now.
@Father_Daniel
Ай бұрын
@joeybaseball7352 yeah that's definitely a factor. I go to the theaters alot but I'm fortunate enough to have a Beacon theatre near me only charges $6 during the day and 7 after 5pm. There's only four of them in America but they're really nice and pretty affordable
Three years ago this weekend, with covid still raging, I went to see The Quiet Place sequel in theater was 2/3 full with everybody masked up; yesterday, I went back to that same theater to see Furiosa, and it was even close to 1/4 of the seats full. This is really a crisis for the film industry. I don't think there was real audience for a Furiosa film, a Mad Max film without Mad Max, except for that cameo.

@@ALOISC1 The theater where I saw Fury Road, which was rated R, had few empty seats when I saw it at a matinee.
The movie theatre experience is terrible. Tickets are overpriced, with WAY too many trailers and adverts, and that ticket price does not guarantee a good experience. Other patrons talk, send & reply to messages on their phones etc etc. In New Zealand it's $33.50 for an adult to watch Furiosa. About the same price as a main meal at a mid-budget restaurant. For that, can't they employ an usher to keep people behaving all through the movie? But no, they do nothing, and people are so addicted to their phones that they have to check them every 5-10 mins. It's too distracting. So I stay home and wait til the rental window. Fix the theatre experience, and I'll come back.

Furosia deserves a higher box office as the movie was very well done!! Hope it’s a grower!
Dude, If I could smoke weed and eat pizza in a theatre, Id get the unlimited membership.
It's upsetting the young generation determines movie success these days. Had Dune: Part 2 not had Chalamet and Zendaya, it wouldn't have made as much money. Same goes for the new Deadpool. Furiosa is a really good action movie. Some of it was breathtaking. Furiosa isn't a girlboss. She goes through hell in this movie. Tom Hardy phoned in the last one. If only we could have Mel back.
The worst Memorial Day box office in nearly 30 years (the movie that went to #1 was a little known Steven Spielberg produced movie I grew up watching, 1995’s Casper, and a film that was way ahead of its time came out on Memorial Day, Johnny Mnemonic starring Keanu Reeves).
It’s over for cinema.

Women: There’s not a lot of strong and powerful female leads in movies these days! Me: Well, did you go see Furiosa? Women: Eww no. What even is that movie? Me: 🙄
I personally loved Furiosa and thought the storytelling and action was fantastic. However, when it comes to box office numbers, I think a lot of it has to do with how inflation is killing everyone right now and the last thing on people's minds is going to see a movie at a theater.

Also, movies don’t take six months or more to come to home video. Dune Part 2 is already on Max. It’s been available on VOD for over a month. The economy, the convenience of staying home and waiting for digital or streaming release are definite factors. But there's another element crippling the movie going experience/business that's being waged on two fronts that I know you don't get into on your channel (with good reason) and that is the so-called culture war being fought thru what used to just be entertainment. The reviews for Furiosa are either, "It's woke garbage", from those of a particular political bend, who, because it has a woman in it, automatically gets cast as being "anti-male"... if you're oblivious to those channels and "reviewers", you must be living under a rock... or they're honest reviews from people who've actually seen it without seeing everything thru political filters, all of which LOVE the film. Hollywood has damaged their brand by producing films which do actually push "the message", which is akin to a religious-themed film, that's only going to appeal to the "believers". That has driven a lot of people not only out of the theaters, but out of giving Hollywood any of their money and now they only seek out "review" channels that reinforce their own cult mentality that everything is "woke". They're the Right's version of "Woke", and they apparently can't see it. The rest of us are caught in the wasteland between and OUR enjoyment of films is being/will be affected going forward due to this war. Because, as you pointed out and have said many times before... if people don't get their butts out of their chairs and off their couches and go see films like Furiosa in the theater, there won't be any more Furiosas for the people not in either (political) cult to see in the future. Which, frankly, makes me despise both "sides" even more than I already do. Hopefully, Furiosa has legs and people will go see it after hearing how good it is, like Godzilla: Minus One and Dune Part 1.

@@toddblankenship7164 It might surprise you to know that artists don't create things "you asked for". That's called, "product" (see also: Disney). They create what they're passionate about inside of them, something that moves them enough to want to exhaust themselves bringing it to life. You knew it was a prequel, and had the choice to stay home, but you chose to go see it anyway. Why if it wasn't a sequel and something "you asked for"? Maybe to feed the disappointment that so many people thrive on, nowadays, instead of just enjoying life as it comes at you?
It’s a spinoff. Spinoff doesn’t make money much.
I guess Garfiosa wasn't a thing then.....
Furiosa is excellent. If you have any love for the franchise, or love action/adventure films, try to catch it in theaters.
the box office being poop is very much impacted by people waiting for movies to come out on streaming services because no one has money anymore. Only the really good hype movies will get box office, Deadpool will go big at the box office.
tbh the majority of fans couldnt give 2 shits about Furiosa, didnt even know that was her name in the first movie. This character cannot stand on her own without Max, same as Miles Morales without Peter Parker
I root for LASAGNA!
It’s not the run time ((Dune was almost 3 hours and a huge hit) or even the “prequel” syndrome. You hit it when you said, there’s NO MAD MAX, which is the entire foundation of the franchise.
I actually wasn’t too excited for a furiosa movie, yes I loved her character in fury road but I didn’t think she was interesting enough for a whole prequel
Fury Road also struggled at the box office considering the budget and franchise history so what is going on with the American movie audience, are they all brainwashed to only want to see the useless Marvel garbage.
Well, that sucks. I love Furiosa. Saw it at Regal in Orlando in IMAX Friday. In my opinion, the second best Mad Max movie behind Fury Road. As for the box office, I know it had a disappointing opening, but people need to stop being skeptical if a film bombs at the box office. They have to wait until the end of their box office runs and see if they made its budget back (via worldwide numbers) and become a success. I don’t trust Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and all those phony Penske Media sites. People need to be patient. If they want to see it again, see it again.
The 2020 Memorial Day weekends biggest movie made $236,334, so it's not true that this is the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades. Also Furiosa is rated R.
Do not discount the power of the Lasagna eating machine that is Garfield. As a kid I collected those comic strips in volume editions. As for Furiosa, I thought the weekend box office was fair. There’s no way this movie is deserving of Lord Humungous’ jock strap but the world of Mad Max is a compelling post apocalyptic Aussie Western where there is no “good” vs “bad” and Chris Hemsworth is allowed to be Australian! It certainly beats the 4th Planet of the Apes 🦍 re-telling which hasn’t told us anything new: Humans can’t be trusted. No, duh! 🤷♂️
Maybe the trailers for Furiousa isnt doing it any favors
Furiosa was a bit disappointing. It wasn’t as good as Fury Road. I definitely felt the run time especially towards the end. It was a solid movie though but not one I would tell people to go rush out and see.

Film studios that belong to major conglomerations need to just accept the Disney model that all movies aren't really going to make a profit but the larger point is positive brand recognition. Amazon does that I think - they spend their shipping war chest and serve up art at a loss because they know it helps grow their brand as a whole. The interconnectivity of their business can have the film department be the 'loss leader'. Incidentally the same phenomena they started is what drove the price of filmmaking up so high by them offering up such generous bounties for production.
The Furiosa trailer did a very poor job of selling the film, too.

crappy cgi....and no max = failure
I haven't seen the film yet but I always thought it was conceptually a bad idea. So we're going to make a prequel (red-flag) to a Mad Max film but not have Max be in it (red flag), and we're going to use the prequel to tell the origin story of a supporting character (red flag) from the last film, but with another actress (red flag). And it's going to be the longest film in the franchise, at nearly 2.5 hours (red flag). And then to sell all this - to overcome all these hurdles - they show all these terrible trailers that for some reason really emphasize the cartoonish CGI. I for one am not surprised that it's bombing.
