I gotta be honest, I didn't like the fascinator joke it could have made her feel like she was being disrespected or belittled. He made the audience laugh at her outfit.

I understand. Your truth is good enough. Feedback helps me grow. I am also good friends with her. She loved it. They knew my heart.

Darren I've spent 10 years looking for funny icebreakers and bits to start a show. 1. A joke WILL work, even if its from the internet. They will not have heard it. Why are you so sure and pompus in yourself that they have. I have 3 hours of material in my head that came out of books that EVERYONE laughs at all the time. people don't read joke books mate. 2. Your example is not very representational of what can universally be done by us all. Also the lady in question does NOT look impressed at all. The funny intro is gold. The first funny 5 minutes is Gold. I don't believe it can be taught, it is organic and comes with really hard work and time. I'm sorry mate but walking on stage in the same hat as a woman won't cut it in 100 percent of the shows I do. Please use a different example of your genius. Comedy is about binding your audience. the icebreaker brings them together. All you do here is attack someone's clothing by suggesting she has picked a stupid hat choice and possibly make a third of the audience laugh.

So.... "don't use a joke from the internet, they've probably heard it before. Instead, hope on the coattails of a joke there's a 100% chance they heard ten minutes earlier. The reason this is not identical to pilfering someone else's joke is that it cannot possibly be, since we're calling it a 'callback', and the other criticism was clearly defined as being applicable to 'jokes'." ...yeah man, I dunno. Speaking as an engineer, "just redefine the same problem using different terminology doesn't sound terribly effective... ...wait: did I miss a hashtag? Are these tips exclusive to marketing and sales?

nope, not exclusive. Redefining a word, based on a common (to the group) frustration.

Humor is subjective. If you are a sponge to learn, be a sponge and figure out why the audience thought it was funny.
