I've been teaching for almost 30 years. I've been trying to purge my classroom and keep finding things from the 80s and 90s. My purging mantra has become "If it's older than my students, it's gotta go." If I don't remember what the activity was that I used it for, it's gotta go. It's way easier to do a Google search than to go through a file cabinet to try to find something.

I graduated in 1989, we had teachers that everyone would visit after school in the middle school. On my way home from high school. They are so happy to see you and being from a small community it was like family. We knew their families and I still today do Christmas cards from my middle school teacher, my son had her also in high school. I had wonderful teachers who stayed after to help you, it was so different. I miss those days.

I recall having several days at the end of the year as a middle school student when we could choose between watching movies inside or playing outside 100% unstructured, but maybe it was a generational thing since we were so excited to see the TV cart that we behaved. I taught middle school for 14 years. I loved it, but it was exhausting. Having a sense of humor is KEY to not losing your mind! I had a coworker who was a former construction worker who said teaching middle school was WAY more tiring than construction work. Regarding state standardized tests:We were told "you can't teach to the test". Isn't that the point of a test? I thought that you teach the material and then test the kids on what you taught them. And yet everyone scratches their heads in confusion when test scores are low. Those standardized tests are guarded better than Fort Knox.

I live in PA where we can opt out of state testing. I remember how bad it was when I was a child and forced to take it. I felt the same way as that child you mentioned. I was a good student, but between my social anxiety and the testing restrictions and environment, it was literal hell. I would have meltdowns before going into the hotel conference room. I was in cyber school so it was with a whole bunch of kids I didn't know and there were so many rules they made you feel like a criminal the entire testing time. After my experience as a child and now working in the public schools and seeing what the PSSA's do, I will advocate for every singe parent to opt out their child. Schools need to find other ways to get money instead of relying on arbitrary student test scores.

I opt my kiddos out of state testing, as well. My children take so many tests throughout the year that it's clear the academic test makers are the only ones benefiting from all of those tests. When I say benefiting, I mean financially. I feel so bad for the teachers because they are the ones getting graded, not really the students.

It’s crazy how the curriculum and standards have changed so much in the past 10 years since I’ve been in middle school yet all the kids seem to be less intelligent. Not to the teacher’s fault but to society’s. In 2012 in middle school our teachers barely put emphasis on state testing. It was essentially “do your best it’s more a reflection of the school than you” the grades had no impact on us unless it was clear that extra help or advanced placement was needed. Now it seems like all teachers do is prep for state testing.

My first year teaching in my current district I ended up as a long term sub for a specific school, and I was left in absolute limbo towards the end of the year job wise. Plus I was sort of a push in Intervention Teacher (it was a Title One school) so I just filled in as needed- but that meant I got to meet sooooo many of the students and built pretty meaningful relationships with them. I was a sobbing mess the last day of school, but when I started back in the fall it broke my heart to see kids just light up and give me hugs on meet the teacher night.

Thankfully this year we don't have one because we are moving in to a new building which has been built directly behind our current one. I am moving schools and it is bitter sweet because this will be my last 8th grade class in this building. And remember that 8th grade teachers have it even WORSE for end of the year activities with the 8th grade dance and Promotion (aka Graduation by many of the parents and students) that have to get planned and make sure that there are people there to set up and people to show everyone where to go etc.

28:18 It is here, at least. We have a student who's missed a lot of school and is on some kind of attendance probation. Mom didn't believe the school when they warned her there were consequences for him missing so much school and the last several weeks he wasn't allowed to miss for anything other than a doctor's appointment without mom risking getting in trouble. Actually, one of our kids had a letter sent home about his attendance and a while later mom wrote him an "excuse note." I just happened to flip the note over and discovered it was ripped off of and written on the back of the truancy letter. I heard of a teenager who received a truancy letter as well. I have not heard of situations getting to the point where the courts get involved, but truancy is still a thing where I am.

He reads the note out loud to the class. It’s says he has a crush on Shayla. Thankfully Shayla wasn’t there that day but eeeeeeveryone in the third grade now knew and Shayla was definitely going to find out. Poor kid turned so red and the teacher was like “it’s okay, Brandon! Don’t be embarrassed! Everyone gets a crush sometimes!” Completely oblivious to what he just did to the poor kid lol

Omg Bri… I can’t agree with you more… 7th grade was awful, but 6th grade was my favorite. Major difference! Seems silly since it’s only a year, but it’s true. I teach HS this year & I actually love it. I taught elementary for 9 years, so I do miss teaching 4th grade. In reference to moving rooms - my principal asked if I wanted to move down the hall to be closer to my grade level partners (this is when I taught elementary, grades 3/4 self contained), so of course I said yes, bc it was also the room RIGHT next to the teacher’s lounge with the copier, restroom, etc lol aka PRIME real estate! Well, 2 weeks before the EOY I went into her room to touch base w her & she told me to put whatever I wanted to keep on the circular table in her room so I did, just some games she had bc everything else was from 1990s & outdated. Last day comes around, I see her leave... I’m like oh wow, she cleared her room fast. NOPE!! She didn’t touch a thing. So it was the last day of school, and before I could even move any of my things into her room I had to move her room completely out. The custodians were like wtf?! I’m like, it wasn’t me!! I felt awful for them. She had so much. I was in tears bc this was now the third time it had happened to me. Moving rooms sucks!!!!!

When I was in 8th grade I had the craziest teacher, and remained the craziest teacher when I graduated. He was retiring the year I had him. Our first day of class which is usually teachers going over rules and syllabus, this teacher spend most of the hour reading detention slips he had given out in the past. We would have like spelling words, which is dumb in 8th grade, but whatever. Instead of having us right them five times or stuff like that he’s give us these crossword puzzles with the definition of the words and we had to fill them in. The insane thing is that he would do them as a class and give everyone the answers. To this day I’m not sure how he got away with it because his class was just so far from any English teacher I had. Maybe he phoned in the year because he was retiring.

When I moved into a first grade classroom 23 years ago, I inherited a room full of … nothing. Nothing. Not one thing. Not even an alphabet with the accepted curriculum or a piece or chalk (still had chalk boards). Discounting Bree’s “nasty” things😅, I would have loved to HAVE to have had to go through old stuff just to find a few office supplies and random helpful stuff. Count your blessings if you get a room full of stuff from a retired teacher.

It doesn’t surprise me that the defiant kids that seem like they hate you actually turn around and tell you they love you. A lack if boundaries for a child is an unsafe feeling. They don’t even realize how much they need boundaries and structure. In the short-term classroom rules are annoying, but at the end of the day they associate that feeling of safety with you AND they respect you more than they respect the other adults in their life. And if your parents don’t care about you enough to parent you properly, they probably don’t show a lot of affection. Telling your teacher “I’m going to miss you, you’re awesome” might feel really vulnerable and it’s a lot easier to be vulnerable with someone that you’re no longer going to see every day.

Oh the preschoolers at the end of the year, please just don't kill eachother; that's it. Spent all of Friday cleaning up; but now I'm off! I just got rid of all my excess books finally this year, I was also left with so much old stuff from 3 different teachers because I moved 3 times to retired teachers rooms 😅 thinking that I should keep these books 📚 NO you'll never use ALL OF THOSE BOOKS AND OLD RESOURCES 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have never been so tired in my life other than teaching. No one gets this unless you teach. The mental capacity is overwhelming. Exactly, there is no down time for ms students. Nooooo.

Your comments about teacher hoarders was very hurtful. 😩 Let me wipe my tears, blow my nose, and tell you why we are so hoardiful. Hoardful. Hoardish. Hoardy. Anyway… I left the classroom 14 years ago due to crippling illness. It took me 5-6 years to accept the fact that I was never going back into the classroom, and I was told it was time to get rid of enough of my teaching materials to make space in the 2-car garage for at least one vehicle. 😭 Because I was tutoring, I insisted it was necessary for me to keep about I kept about half my stuff. For the last five years, I’ve homeschooled and taught GED students. Not a week goes by that I don’t wish I still had something from that purge. And another thing 😤…In 2009, I was told to throw away twenty unused ELA books published in 1999. I took them home instead, and they were not part of the purge. I’ve given most of them to kids I’ve tutored. This book, Write Source 2000, is still my go-to resource for teaching writing. We hoardy hoardy hoarders might annoy the rest of you, but that 0.1% of my mountain of materials will come in handy!🤓

The fact that a teacher is speaking improper English and is saying “they was saying” is concerning…
