I explained this to a friend the other day. The Original had: -A romance subplot that goes nowhere after episode 2 and never mentioned again. -Side characters we're supposed to care about but disappear after their episode is over. -A weird fascination with panty-shots of the main character who is 10 years old and, unlike most anime where a character is modeled after an 18+ person, looks 10 years old and thus is creepy as hell. -The most generic group of main characters that are basically just walking archetypes. -Episodes that end that feels like the writers ran out of ideas. (see episode 6) -An ending that comes out of nowhere and doesn't resolve any of the few hanging plot threads. This is such a shame because apparently the book story this anime was based on is a minor cultural icon in Japan.

Just the way the scream plays AGAIN after "blood stained lake" is one of the funniest fucking things I've ever seen. It's so stupid but it makes me wheeze every time

I disagree. We can actually get any kind of comedy off the internet whenever we want because of wifi. This show was probably on cable & you can't replay an episode on cable like you can on modern electronics. Plus the internet has tons of content.
