Richard Haw haha, i enjoyed listening to it :P i like that 2:41 part on the 2nd lens, when he describes the fungus.. for me, i would say "mmm, you see that, that cotton fiber-like molds".. but him "fungal mycelium!" Damn, i love that, he nailed it perfectly :)

Fungus spores are everywhere, the key is to make sure you store your lenses in a dry atmosphere and not always that easy if you live in a naturally humid area. They need two things to grow, humidity and darkness, just like mushrooms.

I read on the forums to use silica bags in the camera bags. I have always use them. Or you can buy an airtight case. They can be had for under $50.

Most fungus can be cleaned off lenses if you capture them early enough if it is on any coatings, the internals usually clean quite well no matter how long they have growing....Q-tips and cold cream! then once it has been removed use pure alcohol and lint free cloth.Dry carefully before reassembly then store in airtight bags with silica or grains of uncooked rice to absorb moisture.check every six months to see if you have cured the problem because sometimes the metal surfaces of the lens will contain spores which begin the reinfestation action all over again.

john cordey how early? Should we periodically check like every 3 months? I live in humid 65-75% place. And are these special fungus, meaning exclusive to optics glass only? Any harm to health or other household items?

Sometimes it is, sometimes the coating needs to be polished.

i have got fungus on my canon autofocus lens, can anybody suggest how to remove it. Just wondering how does fungus thrive on such a non-living object??

Fungus (in all sorts) is basically everywhere and under the right circumstances spores are able to multiply. Some batches of user-writable CD-Rom's (and obviously officially produced CD's, wow) had been produced in a maybe not-so-clean production environment or where simply bad. Some could already be unusable after only a couple of years. By the way, about fungus/mold on "non-living objects", some homes have it on the walls, which I'd consider to be as much of a non-living object just as a lens is. In the case of fungus being able to thrive, that's the moment when they are able to start causing damage. I recently bought 2 Canon EF extenders on Ebay for 50 dollars (both were listed having fungus or haze and took a guess they would be both "infested" the right way) and put the good elements together. The one having the slightest haze was cleaned and it actually looked like the good elements of the other extender after that. The worst lens-element is probably unfixable by myself, but I've seen hydrogenperoxide and ammonia used as combined cleaning agents to treat the elements effected and am still eager to try that (the lens element looks incredibly "milky").

Carefully disassemble the lens elements (respect position of springs, screws etc.) and use proper tools. Rembember the alignment of the elements and then you can try to clean the affected lens elements with optical cleaning fluid and optical paper. I always recommend to balance risk and benefit of such a procedure. In most times (my pointed lens inclusively) there is no visible effect on photography.

Why not try putting it into a sandwich bag with some silica gel satchets and leave it in the sun for a few days?

Why not put your lens in the microwave oven at max power for one minute, that would kill the fugus.

Would you let me know how I can grow these pretty funguses on my lenses?

Fungus on a lens is a bad thing. Just get a peetree dish

Slightly hazed lens spread like fungus? Just effect contrast & sharpness.
