Fungal Ear Infection (Otomycosis) Causes, Symptoms & Treatment || Ear Infection Treatment

A fungal ear infection, medically referred to as otomycosis, is an infection of the outer ear caused by a fungus. There are several different types of fungus that can cause this infection, but most otomycosis infections are related to Aspergillus species or, less commonly, Candida.
In Fungal ear infection your one or both ears can become inflamed, with dry, itchy skin and possibly a smelly discharge. It can become chronic but often is easily treated with antifungal medication and ear wax removal methods.
In this video, the doctor will discuss some of the key information around fungal ear infections i.e what causes a fungal ear infection?, what are the symptoms of a fungal ear infection?, diagnosis for Fungal Ear Infection, including how fungal ear infections can be treated?

    Very informative video thanks I myself suffered from a fungal ear infection last week. I used to itch alot even with my wireless earbuds. That probably caused my ear infection. I had pain one night and the next day i hoped it will go away on its own. But once i had temeprature above 100. I realised its time to visit the ENT specialist. My ear was almost completely blocked . It was so painful. What my dr did was a wonderful thing. He instantly put a bandage with antifungal cream in my ear so that my ear can stay open and i feel a relieve from a closed ear canal. He said let it stay inside for 4 days and same instructions as yours to keep it dry. He also gave me eaedrops which are antibiotics tobramycin woth dexamethasone. After two days i feel so much fine AlhumduliAllah. Thanks god. Lesson is we should not put pur fingers or any object for itching inside our ears. It is so painful if we develop infection..

After all it does say for external use only, so isn’t it like an internal thing when there’s open skin? And is it okay to dab a few drops on a piece of paper towel then apply it behind my ear? I’m pretty sure my issue is moving behind one of my ears

    Great work Sir. Is there any difference in the effectiveness between ear irrigation and ear suction for fungal infection?

  • @drsharadENTvideos

    @drsharadENTvideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Ear irrigation if done should be cleared properly as if the ear remians wet after irrigation that can cause fungus to again grow in the humid atmosphere inside the ear canal. Betadine wash and suctioning is done many times to clear the fungus from the ear which is a great way not just to clean the fungus from the ear but also prevent the recurremce of the fungus. But the basic gist is that ear should not be left wet.

    Dear Dr. Shared, greetings from LA. Could you, please, answer my questions. In January I ended up at the urgent care. I was told I had both my eardrums erupted. Plus, ears infection. They gave me Amox oral antibiotics. Short after, one eardrum healed by itself and in one ear the infection was gone. Then I went to see an ENT. This doctor did not take a swab to send to the Lab, instead she assumed it was a bacteria infection and treated me with Ciprodex ear drops. 4 months later, the infection got worse. I complained. She then took a swab and sent it to Lab. Turned out I had a fungus infection. She immediately switched med to Clotrimazole ear drops. I am still suffering. A lot of fluid is coming out of my ear, intense itchiness… during this 7 months she applied a purple treatment (2 times) inside my ear. Are you familiar with that ? Another ENT wanted to prescribe me Power CSF and No liquid ear drops like she did. Would that be better maybe, considering I have a big whole next to my fungus infection? I’m really concern. I’m afraid that if I don’t get rid of this infection the puss can go inside my brain? Last night, in desperation i warmed up some salt and gently place it next to my infected ear, I heard that could help a fungus infection. After a while the itchiness stop, I was able to sleep. I will visit a new, 3rd ENT. Please share your thoughts, thank you for trying to help us here and God bless your heart!

    Hi.....i have read your history.... And there is nothing that u need to worry about. Every ENT that has prescribed you medicines from Amox to ciprodex to clotriamazole, to purple thing (which cud be Gentian violet). Everything is something or the other that is routinely used by ENT surgeon. Except the salt thing that u did....rest everything thing is fine. Pus will not enter your brain till you get a disease of ear by the name of cholesteatoma.....and also not every cholesteatoma case enters brain. So don't worry......keep following up with ENT specialist.....and try to stick to one till the time that ENT specialist himself refers you to bigger center/hospital. Two different ENT docs can differ atleast 30-40% in their treatment in treating the same disease.....it's very normal. So don't worry and keep following up with the ENT specialist

    Very informative, Doctor. I would like to clarify to duration of using topical antifungal cream or ear drop, is 5-7 days enough to treat fungi? What if we clean it up properly and apply boric acid to increase acidic pH in the ear canal, will it be worked for this otomycosis case?

  • @drsharadENTvideos

    @drsharadENTvideos

    2 ай бұрын

    In most cases just antifungal ear drops for 5-7 days are enough. In case the fungal infection is stubborn.....we put gel foam soaked in antifungal ear drops in the patient's ears. That mostly treats the stubborn fungus. The idea behind using Boric acid is to change the pH of the ear canal to stop the fungus from growing. It can be used. But I personally have never used it for ear fungal infection. But I have used it for recalcitrant ear discharge not responding to routine treatment.

    Hello Dr Sharad. Thank you for your video. I’ve had ear pain for 3 months that has not cleared up after 3 courses of antibiotics and steroid drops. It started when I laid down with wet hair in May. I’m now realising it’s probably a fungal infection, but my dr has never suggested it could be this and just kept giving antibiotics. My ear hurts so badly I have to take pain relief every 4 hours. What kind of drops should I ask my Dr for? They’ve referred me to an ear specialist but I won’t get an appointment for months. I’m in the UK. I developed a calcification on my eardrum over this time. What options are there to treat that and could that be the cause of my pain rather than a fungal infection? My ear does itch a lot. But not constantly. Thank you.

    Ma'am....a case like yours need a proper examination of the ear. The most important thing in your ear is to confirm the diagnosis that whether it's ear's fungal infection or its just eardrum infection which has gone to the Mastoid bone causing such pain that u require pain killer every 4 hourly. Calcification of the ear drum is called myringosclerosis.....it is usually not considered serious.

    Hello Doctor. I hope you see this cause I need advice. I have suffered from bacterial ear infections for years now. Permanent tinnitus on both ears but more noticeable on the right ear. No treatment worked for the tinnitus. I would use ear drops earlier prescribed by ENT doctor to stop any itchiness on both ears if I suspect early occurrence of infection and sysptoms would subside. Recently, the ear drop didn't work and my left ear felt filled up with hearing loss. ENT doctor told me I have fungi infection on both ears but heavy on the left. He had a nurse clean out both ears with warm saline water and prescribed antifungal cream. I immediately regained my hearing during the ear flushing and tinnitus on left ear reduced. But a day later after I started applying the antifungal cream, the fullness gradually intensified and hearing loss with tinnitus became louder. I have tried calling my doctor but its a Saturday and he is busy. What went wrong and what do I do?

Like you said, he told me the cream I applied had blocked it. But I think I also saw discharge. He also noticed before flushing that my ear left ear was wet. He told be my left ear drum was retracted and there was no air coming out from my eustachian tube. He said I should stop the biocoten and prescribed sinufed and gentamicin ear drop. He was doubting if its a fungal infection. I am confused because this very left ear keeps getting wet and making me uncomfortable. I don't want it to get blocked again. This morning, I noticed the right ear is showing same symptoms( wetness and a little dull hearing) but not as bad as the left ear. I am to see him after one week but I feel I need to do a culture and sensitivity test before then. I don't know what to do. I have been chewing gum and blowing air out of my ears as he adviced.

  • @drsharadENTvideos

    11 ай бұрын

    Ma'am.....the ear drops when goes from the eardrum to the throat is an indirect indication that there might be a hole in the eardrum. When there is an acute infection in the ear drum, then sometimes it happens that there occurs a very small pinpoint or pinhead size hole in the eardrum, which heals by itself once the ear infection is treated. This small pinpoint hole is sometimes missed during the ear examination as this hole gets hidden behind the redness and the swelling of the eardrum.
