STORYLINE
The Netherlands on Tuesday bid farewell to former queen Juliana, burying her with the royal honours that she shunned in her lifetime.
Bells pealed across the nation when her coffin emerged through the colonnaded door of the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague and was placed in a horse-drawn hearse while a military band played the national anthem.
Opaque white screens were lowered over the open sides, lending an air of dignified solitude to her final journey.
The 19th century hearse, covered in purple with white plumes on the corners and a golden crown in the centre of the roof, wound through the
cobbled streets of The Hague toward the Nieuwe Kerk, or New Church, in Delft, 13 kilometers (eight miles) away.
From schoolchildren to elderly people of Juliana''s generation, thousands of citizens watched from behind an honour guard of nine thousand military men lining the route as the hearse rolled by.
It was followed by a carriage carrying the eldest sons of Queen Beatrix and her three sisters.
Beatrix and her sisters, all dressed in white, traveled separately by limousine to join the procession for the final few hundred metres (yards) to the church.
Grieved by a nation grateful for her leadership during the difficult postwar years of recovery and social change, Juliana was laid to rest in the vault next to her parents, Queen Welhelmina and Prince Hendrik.

She was an amazing person, she was kind and warm to everyone she ever met. When she had her Birthday people walked along the palace to give her presents they either bought or made for her and she would spend weeks on end unpacking them and sending thank you cards, that's why she was like a mother for all of us in the Netherlands.

As a Brit living in NL, I think I understand constitutional monarchy, and I respect the work of the royal family and their contribution to the culture. Politics is by definition fractious and divisive. We can all look to the royal family as sort of apolitical cultural standard bearers. I’ve learned some of the history of the dutch queens in the 20c and it helps me understand my new home and it’s people. Bedank.

I really feel for Beatrix, she lost her husband Prince Claus in 2002 aged 76.She lost her Mother Juliana in March 2004 aged 94.She lost her Father Prince Bernhard in December 2004 aged 93. Then in 2013 she lost her son Johan Friso, who died in August 2013 as a result of being trapped in an avalanche(February 2012);and never regaining consciousness. No wonder she abdicated in favour of her son,Willem Alexander in April 2013. The Netherlands has had three queens before the present King Willem Alexander. Wilhelmina (1890-1948) Juliana (1948-1980) Beatrix(1980-2013 ) and after the present King it will be a Queen again,as the Kings has three daughters!

The reason is that in 1934 prince Hendrik von Mecklenburg, Queen Wilhelmina's husband, wanted a white funeral. The Queen was so impressed (she seldom was) so she also wanted a white funeral herself. That happened in the early '60. The funeral coach was also white, but Queen Beatrix changed the colour. Now a sort of blue. What the rest of the world thinks? This is a Dutch royal funeral, not a world event.

Is “Queen Mother” quite the right title in the Netherlands? Here, the title is reserved for a Queen Consort who is the mother of the current reigning Sovereign, but not, usually, the grandmother of the current Sovereign. Queen Mary did not assume the title of “Queen Grandmother” on the death of King George VI and the accession of her grand-daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. She then ceased to be referred to as “The Queen Mother” and then became simply “Queen Mary”. I always heard Queen Juliana referred to following her abdication simply as “Princess Juliana”. The title “Queen” would have been inappropriate, since she had not been a Queen Consort.

Actually, Princess Irene gets out of the coach first, followed by her sister, Queen Beatrix, then Princess Christina and finally Princess Margriet. In the foreign delegation, I believe that might be Princess Alexandra of Kent leading the way in a black suit with white scarf. Following behind is Queen Margrethe of Denmark walking and chatting with King Juan Carlos of Spain. Following them are the King and Queen of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustav and Silvia. Behind Carl Gustav and Silvia are the King and Queen of the Belgians, Albert II and Paola. Then, I see Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg is there and walking just behind him is Queen Noor of Jordan. In the seated portion inside the church @4:47 I can make out of course Prince Philip, then Queen Paola and King Albert II, Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustav, Queen Margrethe and finally King Juan Carlos of Spain. Second row looks like King Constantine's second son, Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark, then two over is Prince Akishino of Japan, so I'm guessing his wife, Princess Kiko, is in-between the two princes. Then it looks like Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and after her is seated the Crown Prince of Norway, Haakon. In the close up shot the next lady sort of resembles Queen Anne Marie but I could be wrong. Finally, rounding out that row are Queen Noor of Jordan and Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. The third row I see Prince Albert of Monaco and a couple of representatives of the royal house of Morocco - possibly Mohammed VI. In the fourth row I believe that is Marie and Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein. You know, if you read the full description box, it details the events and some of the attendees.

Dutch kings abdicate when they are of old age and their successor is ready to take over. Only two out of six did not, William II died after an accident at a relative young age, William III could not abdicate because his successor was only ten years old when he died. William I, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix all abdicated at old age. So, in the Netherlands it is normal for a king to abdicate. When 'the King' is female we call her Queen and her consort Prince.

In the spring of 1975, a group of South Moluccans were caught conspiring to steal a heavy truck and ram the gates of Soestdijk Palace to kidnap the queen. Ten members of the group in a vehicle full of firearms were arrested. The group's alleged aim was to force the Dutch government to recognize the Republik Maluku Selatan (RMS) as an independent state and try to make the Indonesian government do the same. Seventeen South-Moluccan youngsters were tried and convicted and sentenced to up to six years imprisonment. She was lucky to be on vacation in Italy

The Dutch monarchy doesn't date further back than 1815 (*) (though the hereditary position of the family does) so it's never been surrounded by traditions going back to medieval times as the English monarchy is. In our country, no one would actually believe that the king has some god-given duty to reign till the hour of death- the kingship is basically just a high level diplomatic job you can resign from when you get too old much like any other job, even if the position is hereditary. Neither is a Dutch monarch _crowned_ for example, simply _inaugurated_ as a coronation would imply being anointed / appointed by god. Different country, different traditions. And actually, abdication is quite a common thing in non-British royal houses- we aren't the only ones to do so. Even only looking at Europe, I can cite the Belgian monarch abdicating in 2013, or the Spanish one in 2014 in recent years. (*) Ignoring here that Napoleon made his brother 'king of Holland' during the French occupation in 1806.

No she wasn't, as was Queen Wilhelmina, after Queen Wilhelmina abdicated she got the title Princess Wilhelmina as did Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix. After the death of a former abdicated Queen the title is changed from Princess to Queen again. The Same it with Kings. When Willem I abdicated he regained the title Prince of Orange-Nassau. After his death he became King Willem I again. When Beatrix dies she will be again Queen Beatrix.

Not in the Netherlands. Here, people believe life should be celebrated rather than mourned. In old school Dutch Protestantism, as the Royals are, the belief is that God gives solace. If you are a true believer, you take comfort in the fact that you'll see your loved ones again. So a funeral is a celebration of life. Not a finality.
