Funeral for television legend Desi Arnaz in 1986, Lucille Ball remembers her former husband

December 4, 1986 The funeral of television legend Desi Arnaz. Lucille Ball, Gary Morton, Desi Arnaz Jr., Lucie Arnaz, and Danny Thomas were among the mourners. Lucy told CBS 8 that her former husband was a great showman, musician, father, and husband and he was a great part of the innovation in this business. Danny Thomas spoke at the service and said "I will never ever forget his tremendous help to me, but I speak not just what he did for me, but what he has done for the entire industry."
Film at end is at Del Mar Racetrack on Jimmy Durante Day in 1958.

    Lucy always gave Desi credit. However, there is a continual dispute who did what vis a vis putting the I Love Lucy Show together. Originally, Jess Oppenheimer was the executive producer, not Desi. Also, the writers Jess O, Madeline Pugh, and Bob Carroll Jr all knew Lucy from the radio show, "My Favorite Husband". Also, Lucy knew Karl Freund the cinematographer from movies she appeared in. Also, William Frawley, who was also in films, called Lucy about being on the show and she referred him to Desi. Marc Daniels, the original director of I Love Lucy was the one who spotted Vivian Vance, and had Desi come to watch her in a play and all agreed she was the one to play Ethel. Also, Marc Daniels the first director of I Love Lucy, according to his son, told everyone that Lucille Ball was the greatest actor he ever directed and he directed people like Paul Newman, Sallie Fields, Julie Harris, Laurence Olivier. (Orson Welles who appeared on one of the I Love Lucy shows, said similarly that she was one of the greatest actors of the 20th century). So in that respect 3 people really made I Love Lucy: Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Jess Oppenheimer.

    Desi had the same serious addictions when he married Edie, his second wife, but she did not work or have any career. I guess her job was taking care of Desi. He was working very little at that time and later had sold his shares in Desilu. Because of his drinking, Desi was making bad decisions, and the company was losing money. He had to sell his shares to Lucille. So she took over as head of Desilu - and was acting in and producing The Lucy Show. Desi had asked Lucy to make the show, since the company was losing money; so in the first year or two he was the producer, but left that role. It was said, he could not stand seeing Gary Morton do the warm ups as he once did. (That was a rumor not sure if it is true).

    @@LJ-ht4zs Well, Lucy didn't mind the gambling as much as she did the drinking and womanizing. That's what really got to her. With the womanizing, Desi always claimed it was a cultural difference. That men in the Latin culture always have women on the side for sex but are devoted to and love their wives. Even Desi's father slept around. But Lucy, who was from a very old American protestant family and had pioneer stock in her believed in monogamy. As for the gambling, she used to actually go with Desi to the racetrack at Delmar.

  • @LJ-ht4zs

    @LJ-ht4zs

    @@retroguy9494 Another reason why Lucy did not mind Desi's gambling - they divided their finances early on. He was gambling with his own money - not with hers. His second wife Edith did not have her own finances and had a great problem with his gambling. Edie knew Lucy and Desi when they were both married; in fact, Lucy and Edie used to play cards together. However, after the divorce Desi played around a lot with other women, (acc to his daughter Lucie) then apparently went with Edie - though she was still married. Her husband hired a detective and had evidence of her adultery with Desi. I think she took quite a financial hit in the divorce. Her husband was financially well off. So Desi's gambling, which like everything else he did, was excessive and she was on edge, and almost divorced him for all the addictions.

    She was actually chewing on her bottom lip while the service was being conducted, in order to keep her breaking down and crying. You could also see it in her face (and forced words out of her mouth), of her trying to hold it together when she was being interviewed. Her face was actually twisted in agony.

    What do you mean you "don't understand" who her second husband was? What's there to understand? Desi and Lucy both remarried after their divorce.

    I remember when Desi died. I'm a little surprised at two things watching this footage. The first is how sparsely attended his funeral seemed. One would think it would have been crowded. The second is how casually so many people are dressed for a funeral Mass. Even Lucy herself. Today, people don't care about their appearance and would show up in a tee shirt, jeans or shorts. But 40 years ago, dressing appropriately for occasions was not only still a thing, but it was expected. I also can't believe how OLD Lucy looks here!

    @@deborahstrickland4624 I don't think it did. When she was young, Lucy suffered a very bad case of rheumatic fever. One of the causes that led to the ruptured abdominal aneurysm, as well as the dissecting aortic aneurysm that she had been operated on for was cystic medial necrosis. It's listed on her death certificate. Rheumatic fever CAN cause that, especially over time as the artery walls weaken due to the fever.

    Yes, that was the worst I ever saw her look - maybe it was the grief. Saw her in other things after Desi's passing and she looked far better. Right after this, she received the Kennedy Center Honors, and while sad, she did not look badly. Only when Robert Stack read the note that Desi had written about Lucy for the program, the last line of his note was "I Love Lucy"was never just a title. took everything for her not to break out in tears - one could see her anguish when this was read.

    Its funny I watched a bio on Lucy and she was getting interviewed and she was saying how lousy he was , and and a snake etc etc , but you knew that with all that toughness she loved him, and her daughter said that Lucy called and her daughter put the phone up to his ear and was saying I love you and he said it back and I believe it was actually their anniversary that day , anyway they said i loved you and I believe he passed the next day ..I know I may have got some things wrong but i got the jist of it 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Lucy was a beautiful woman in many of her younger decades, but the cigarette habit definitely took its toll. Younger people, that's what cigarettes do to you. They pull the oxygen out of your blood, and collapse of tissues follows.
