Functional Movements for Scrambling Ability [Follow Along]

Спорт

How to improve your ability & confidence on steep terrain when scrambling or climbing? Replicate the movements in your training! This is a simple workout built around these 6 animal movements that translate well to the vertical (or near-vertical) world. I find that scrambling and crawling either comes naturally to people or they really struggle with it.
This is mostly for those that struggle with it, but it's still a nice fun movement workout!

Thanks! I agree trusting yourself, your body is important and practice is the way to build that trust🌷

Thank you for this. I just started to climb the Adirondack 46 Peaks (8 done) and was struggling with the scrambles. I have a lot of work to put in to improve but this is great start to improve my core, which I lack at 50 years old.

Fantastic set of movements... using muscles I didn’t even know I could use! I’m finding it extremely challenging but that’s a good thing as progress will be more noticeable! Your comment about how to gain more confidence at heights is spot in. I’ve got so much less fearful mentally as I’ve got stronger and more confident with my body’s ability and strength. Thanks :)

This is pretty cool! I realized independently that quadrupedal movements and flowing between bipedal and quadrupedal movements benefitted my scrambling immensely. It's awesome to see someone as knowledgeable as yourself validate that.

Thank you Chase, good stuff. . . Trust in strength but also KEY is familiarity with your body and it's exact capabilities, reach & balance through out your movements, by going out often, not just training. . . know you have done that scary move many times before and already know how it will come out. . . that's where confidence at heights comes from. . . walking a sidewalk near traffic is as dangerous as anything! but you are very experienced and comfortable walking. . . . man that ridge line looks tasty!

I get the breathing mixed up. Normal in/out or hold and take air when needed. Moving up the rock do I hold or release or pant like I normally do ? Sorry for asking but .... Hold breath while moving or let air out ? Hope you can follow this train wreck of thought. I just found your channel and the work out for strength for mountaineering video.

Will doing indoor climbing such as indoor bouldering help with scrambling skills?

It definitely will. And doing this workout benefits indoor bouldering as well. To get better at bouldering you should be bouldering, doing pushups or bench press, a core workout (sit ups, side planks, etc or the workout shown in the video), and sub-maximal hangboarding (use one or both feet to take some of the weight off your fingers). Doing a lot of down climbing, slabs, and traverses whenever you can will help a lot for scrambling too
