Fun With The Fujara

The “fujara” is a Slovakian overtone flute. Notes are controlled partly by stopping holes with your fingers (like a conventional flute or recorder) and partly by the pressure of your breath.
A few weeks ago, I got myself a “futujara” from flute wizard Nadishana and I had such fun with it right out of the box, that I decided to make myself a fujara out of PVC pipe. The instrument I made is the one you see in the video. It is 68 inches (173 cm) long and is in the key of G. I called this video “FUN WITH THE FUJARA” because I make no claims to being able to play the instrument at anything beyond the level of a rank amateur!
There are, however, a couple of things about the performance that I should explain. First of all, I am playing while seated, and that is because I am accompanying myself on a pedal board (a ROLAND PK-5) similar to the type of pedal board found on church organs. The “choir” that you hear is being controlled by the pedals. The fujara is traditionally played while standing, but it is not possible to play pedals in a standing position. The ability to add harmony to the improvisation lends another dimension to the experience of the instrument.
At one point in the video I am also using a pitch shifter (a LEXICON MPX 1) which is activated by a footswitch. This allows me to play a major third and when it is used in combination with the two notes possible with the pedal board, some unusual and unexpected harmonies are possible.
There are some wonderful fujara virtuosos on KZread, and I have been seriously inspired (not to mention humbled) by both Winne Clement and Max Brumberg.

it is like one of those moments, especially in late afternoon or evening, when it feels like everything is still, and you can almost feel the earth moving. at first i didn't know how to hear the unusual sounds, but the more i listen, the more they seem like they belong and it is all beautiful, and mystical. thank you very much i wish everyone could hear this.

Don't undercut yourself mate, that is good playing, both beautiful in sound and well done on making your own. I just purchased a pvc fujara too last week, I am a didgeridoo player but the Fujara is so much fun to play that I want to try a wooden one to feel the difference in play, you can play nice on a pvc didge but the depth of sound is far better on a traditional wooden didge. Great work my man 👏 Also where is the church you are playing in "Stunning"

Thank you, for this nice performance. But playing Fujara (shepherds pipe) in our country (I am from Slovakia) realy is more wild, dolorous or more yoyful, because this souds represents our wild, stormy and sometimes deeply sad Slovak soul. This instrument was the main music instrument of shepherds in the mountains of High ang Low Tatras. Look for example this : Fujara - Daniel Homola a Ľuboš Dubovský Fujara- sounds of Poľana Five Fujara Songs & Melodies from Slovakia But Mr. Peter Springle is master of ancient songs, for me : his The Egyptian ancient love song is one of the best...

As a Slovakian myself I love his grasp of the instrument. It's different than how our musicians play it and honestly, I find it refreshing. Slovakian Fujara players tend to replicate the same traditional sound over and over again, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but It's nice to see it being done differently.
