Alexander In India - Surbahar & Kithara
Музыка
In spite of having had a lot of fun making this video, I wasn’t too happy with it and originally posted it to KZread as “unlisted” but a few people asked me to make it public - so here it is.
The surbahar belongs to the Veena Family of the classical instruments of India, and is comparable to the western cello in size and register. The one you see in the video was made for me about 50 years ago by the great Indian luthier, Kanai Lal of Calcutta.
The Greek “kithara” was built by master luthier, Anastasios Koumartzis, of LUTHIEROS MUSIC INSTRUMENTS, which is located in the Macedonian region of Northern Greece. This is the same area in which Alexander The Great was born. The kithara was the instrument of choice for professional musicians during the Golden Age of Greece which reached its height around 500 B.C.E.
In his military exploits, Alexander travelled east as far as the Indus river, which he reached in 326 B.C.E. By that time, he was far from home, his men were getting tired, and they were met by fierce opposition from the armies of the rulers whose territories they invaded. As a result, Alexander never penetrated into the Indian subcontinent, and died in Babylon in 323 B.C.E., on his way back home.
This composition is in the Indian scale (“thaat”) known as “bhairav” (flat 6th and flat 2nd). The surbahar was built to be tuned to an F#, so the kithara is tuned F# G B C C# D F F#.

This is what I imagine music in the Indo-Greek royal court sounded like. Menander would be pleased. 👏
I believe that Mr. Pringle's unique genius lies in his deep instinctive affinity for the culture and the people whose music he is playing. There are many musicians who can accurately play many styles of music on various instruments, but they cannot become one with the people and the times of the music they are playing. Whether Peter sings of Dagda's magic harp while playing the hurdy gurdy, or the song of Gilgamesh on the Sumerian long neck gishgudi, or even The Wanderer on the Saxon lyre: he takes you on a multi dimensional journey transcending time and space. He IS the music. He is the vehicle that takes you home.

@two arrows I recognise this my man, but it was more so his ease with the scalar demands of Indian music I was commenting on, which is notably different and has great complexity. Peter, to my easily pleased ear at least, sounded like he’d been attuned to the Indian conventions of melody for years, hehe.
Can you do some more ancient Egyptian music on an ancient Egyptian lute?

I'm so happy whenever I see this channel update. lol
Perfect, I was listening to the Sumerian song now we get a cross cultural music that only happened because of Alexander’s empire and the Mauryan empire.
Man I wait and wait and wait for a update from your channel pringle, been like this for years. Delightful when something comes up. More wonderful instruments. So much of this is lost by the masses even those of us who would like to go about this music have difficulty finding the instruments, resources, learning aspects of it. If you could go into the instruments you have, how they function, how to learn. All of that would make for fascinating videos. Would love some more educational based videos
The Kithara is such an amazing sounding instrument, I love it so much. Such a clean sound. Please make more with it

Wah, shaandar. Always a pleasure to watch his videos, but it's extra special cuz muh classical music 😌
Thank you Peter. I and the world greatly appreciate your revival of ancient music. Please keep doing what you do, what we all love so much as musicians.
all of ancient musicians rebirth in this man! Love it!
The sound of the 300s BC.
So this is how the music of the Indo-Greek kingdom might have sounded -- the place where the first sculptures of Buddha were based on ones of Apollo.
I admire your skill. Thank you, Peter! From Russia with love.

The sound touches my soul, it takes me to another life I had forgot,
Amazing as always. I'd like to inquire, Mr. Pringle, about the usage of your videos and related audio. I have an educational page and hannel and I'd like to use your rendition of the Epic of Gilgamesh in a video talking about it. I'd obviously point towards the original video and your channel in general. Would that be fine?
Wow - what a surprise to see a new Peter Pringle! I'm still waiting for more Gilgamesh ...
Love all your fantastic works!
Would love to hear more kithara its so rare and you play it so well
Thank you for including the tuning of the kithara. I love the unconventional scale you decided on for this.
I was offered a Sitar as a gift on our 20th wedding anniversary and refused (very politely) simply because I couldn't beat the thought of tuning it every time i wanted to play it...
Thanks for sharing your wondrous musical talent with the world. Were you ever able to meet Anoushka Shankar or her father Ravi? I think they were both born with sitar’s in their hands.
Spectacular Jugalbandi of Sitar and Chitara. As if it was sounded like it sure from an ancient time in an exotic royal court. Thank you sir for recreate the history.

Stunning piece of music. I think this was on "Now 14-bc".
This should be playing on all the radio stations and be No. 1.
Oh wooow! Thats the most beautiful thing ! Please could you nake a long Version? Its so beautiful, I hear it any day! One thing Im not understanding, why is it that the lyre is tuned line it is, and not with the flats like in the indian scale specified?
Instruments are exquisite…what a privilege to hear him play.
Happy to hear another extraordinary piece from you Peter! Stay safe
