Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons / techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

It’s sort of like the _community posts_ and _community poll_ “hacks” exposed by the _Spiffin Brit_ brought to the forefront a few months ago. I find it interesting that this has happened because if you dig deeply enough into a subject on KZread, you will discover comments by your favorite creators because these hyper focused creators often fuel the creativity and knowledge of better known creators like _Adrian Black_ and _Techmoan_ who have an above average knowledge of subject matter and reach a wider audience. It’s sort of like how Techmoan cites sources new to most of his viewers or Adrian’s projects on github.

I noticed this too while I was editing this video, so added a mention of it in the Patreon comments section for the Philips LGC video..and in the addendums in that video’s description box. A few people also directed me to the ISO standards that explain the meaning of the symbols. Since I don’t have a suitable DIN plug for any of the sockets other than the microphone it’s not something that’s ended up being an issue though.

These printers are even today in reseach (lab) environments quite often in use: For instance DNA electrophoresis, aka Gel-Documentation. There are even USB models out there that have beside the video in a USB in too. You get about 200 prints per roll. I used to work for a company selling those systems along with these printers. Mitsubishi is producing such video thermal printers as well.

Worked at the Sanger Institute for 19 years, predominantly on the Human Genome Project almost from the start and when we were doing very basic piecing together of the chunks of DNA we had sonically smashed up, these were the machines we used to take the photos of the electrophoresis gels we had run to separate the sizes. I want to shout out a warning for all that are looking now for a fromer gel documentaion printer. Many labs using or used the fuorescent dye „Ethidium Bromide“ to visualize the DNA bands. Unfortunately Ethidium bromide is very poisonous. Lab people handle the gels always with special gloves. Which is find. But often they handle the priters with the same gloves too. So be careful to use a surplus printer from the ditch or trash. Clean them well with gloves and lots of alcohol.

  • @johnnyboy114

@@ironspike171 agreed. Ethidium Bromide is carcinogenic and highly so and although proper lab practices of H&S end of life procedures should ensure that these machines are indeed cleaned and decontaminated before decommission, I suspect there will be a lot out there that aren’t. Good call. Wear gloves and clean thoroughly with a soap then Isopropanol to remove any residue.

Loved seeing this. In addition to being used in the medical field, they were also used in some newspaper photo departments. During my college years in the early '90s, I was a photo intern at The Miami Herald, and we had one of these connected to a video device we would use to preview our photos. It would reverse the negative image and allow us to do quick edits on a monitor without the need to make a contact sheet. The printer was used to kick out quick proofs of photos for reference. We would then glue the printout to the outside of an envelope that held the negative, and send that off to layout and pagination. (This was before photoshop was widely used). Thanks for making this video! Brought back some memories.

We used these back in the studio photography chains I worked for back in the 90s and early 2000s. Just like your selfie setup, we would have a security camera mounted to a Camerz Z-II 70mm film camera. The security camera would run to a computer that would store images every time the photographer triggered the camera, then later with the client, the seller could scroll through the stored images and print them off for the customer using this exact same model of printer. Much like you were saying, when we started transitioning to digital, no one was using the printers anymore, and most ended up simply being thrown away. What a blast of nostalgia I felt seeing you hook up a security cam like that!

Back then I asked them about the pixelization and the photographer made an analogy with a TV screen - smaller screen, better picture. It was a good analogy for a photo with the size of a stamp! I worked in genetics for 19 years and one of the things we had to do was run “gels” with DNA that had been broken up sonically, loaded into small wells at the top of the gel and separated via electrophoresis. These gels were then stained and viewed on a high powered UV light. The bands, which represented the “sizes” of the chunks of the DNA that had been pulled through the gel, would then be clearly seen. But obviously a record and something more readily handleable was needed to study the results so a top down camera was used and then the images were printed out on one of these exact machines. The images on them were so good that often it was easier to see the really small, feint, often important bands than it was to see with the naked eye. What’s more, you couldn’t and shouldn’t be exposed to the UV light we were using at the time, even WITH a mask for any prolonged period of time for risk of serious damage to eyes and skin, so these little machines were absolutely invaluable. I have fond memories of taking pictures of all sorts of stuff for the labs amusement with one of these 🤣🤣

Compact, quiet, reliable, high duty cycle, fast, programmable interfaces of various media types, easy paper refilling and no toner or ribbon for user to be bothered with. For example tickets, baggage labels at airports, receipts, etc. Usually quite expensive when new and the thermal print heads are often expensive to replace. As you say, need to be careful you don't get one that uses expensive or impossible to source paper. Reminds me of the old Sinclair home computer printers (and others of the time). These were thermal. Quite cheap to buy but everyone was a bit miserly in terms of printing stuff out as the paper was so expensive 😄.
