    There is a way that this could happen without incest. Consider two sisters with considerable age gap. A man marries the younger of the two sisters, and his father marries the older of the two sisters. The younger couple then has a child. To keep it simple, they just tell the child that the paternal grandpa and his wife are grandma and grandpa, despite the fact that the "paternal grandma" is really his maternal aunt.

    @Belletaina Just throwing around conjectures: It could be that Omega House isn't _actually_ legally affiliated with Arlen Community College or its Greek Life organization. It could just be a house owned by the Omega cult, positioned near the college and made to look and operate like a regular sorority house. This puts new recruits at ease, dodges extra scrutiny from the neighbors, and provides an easy pretense for uniformed young women regularly approaching students, taking them off campus and into their house, and generally monopolizing the time of the girls who go in one day and come out wearing the same uniform. Arlen Community College doesn't stop them because they don't actually know they exist and/or they have extremely limited power of their own to use against Omega House besides just calling the police to complain. Alternatively, Omega House _is_ an official sorority, but the college doesn't know about the brainwashing, or they've received complaints, but the Omegas have all their real estate and sorority-establishment paperwork in order, and the school is scared of drawing the attention of the cult's legions of lawyers based on a few complaints the cult is no-doubt experienced in countering and with very little hard evidence.

    I used to be in a cult, the reason that they try to brute force Luanne to join the cult instead of slow rolling it is because cult members think their cult is the best and don't see why no one wouldn't want to immediately join. How does Luanne end up in all the most messed up episodes? Not just this episode and Pigmalion. Her boyfriend was the first recurring character to die on the show, and he visited her as an "angel" a few episodes later. Maybe it's because she's the "dumb" character with the best heart. When Peggy, Dale, or Bill do something dumb it's usually their fault; when Luanne does something dumb, it just kind of happens to her.

    It could be that Luanne returning with little resistance was a reaction to Peggy's little speech about how she thinks not being in a sorority left her friendless later in life and accepting Peggy's reasoning of hazzing. Granted it's a hard cut with no reaction from Luanne and the next she speaks she sounds full on brainwashed, but it makes some sense.

  • @LadyBern
    @LadyBern5 жыл бұрын

    I don't think they meant for Luanne to all be for going back without protest but that she still has so much trust and faith in what Peggy says that she goes along with them. Sadly Peggy is lonely and she's seeing the sorority as experiencing a social life vicariously with Luanne. The hazing line that Peggy presents before deciding to take Luanne back is more significant to me for her mindset. People like to handwave away hazing, think of it as nothing but a test of fortitude and a means for pledges to grow stronger and closer together. If you quit you're looked down on as weak for not putting up with it. Another thing is the idea of pledges going through a shared coping that helps to bring them all together and this kinda feeds into their shared issue of not having friends. I mean didn't you notice how Peggy goes from Luanne needs to hang out with people her age to her wanting to hang out with a bunch of younger girls? I think Luanne's change of attitude after Peggy returned her isn't just her accepting the idea that 'Aunt Peggy is always right' and more feeling more secure in having someone she is close to share coping with her. Anyhow I can't remember what got me started on looking into cults but I do like how they accurately portrayed the mental manipulation and break down tactics that they use on people. Also looking into it made it so fun to break down the 'Love' episode of "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared"

    this episode was funny as hell but also disturbing. it was excellent. I love how Hank is answered with "a group of love and...." and hes like "YUP it's a cult." Most disturbing part of the episode is Peggy's inability as someone over 40 years old not recognizing a dangerous element and then dragging her own flesh and blood back to it. That she got captured too was poetic justice, but no excuse for throwing Luanne back at the cult.

    The purpose for leader Jane being so harsh with Luanne is that she's on a tight schedule. She needs to get all the people in her house indoctrinated and ready to take the bus to the ranch, where in all likelihood they will be subject to what is effectively slave labor. The purpose of feeding them only rice and controlling when they may and may not use the bathroom is to 1. save money and 2. the time you spent using the bathroom in the middle of the day is time you could be spending out in the fields picking fruit to be made into jams and jellies. By doing this, Omega House can maximize productivity and aggressively minimize labor costs, bringing them more of that sweet sweet profit.

    Few points I want to talk about: 1. Hank wasn’t exactly “in on this” when Luanne told him about what the Omega House did. He thought she was drunk and only brought her back because he thought she was drinking too much. 2. For not getting the Emus to sit still, when Hank gives them food, it’s at sunset. When he lies to Buck, it’s at night. And when they lose them, it looks like morning the next day. It’s possible that they ran out of food in between those scenes, especially since there’s four Emus.

    On a minor note, if "they don't own you why should they name you" is true why should the group name you? Their very line of thought is destroyed by forcing the name jane.

    That is sort of the scary part about cults. This one targeted girls who had been rejected by the other sororities and who were already vulnerable. And they're used to preying on victims who already have poor relationships with their parents. They make the name thing sound like a choice, when in reality they're just manipulating the girls into going further into the group.
