The King Of The Hill Finale That Got Away

Фильм және анимация

According to various sources, Lucky's Wedding Suit was intended to be the finale of King of the Hill. This is not the case in our timeline. King of the Hill would continue on, ending with To Sirloin With Love. So is this a better finale than the last one?

I would think so as it would have Hank seen in a fairer light as he has a point with the wedding costing more money than necessary. The series finale has a problem with something that has been the focal point throughout the series such as Hank having trouble with connecting to Bobby and takes something Hank is interested in order to accomplish this. But Luanne could have acted better with what all that happens in the plot to see how it affected Hank but also Dale.

Nah, this one had lucky just going back to his old hill Billy antics and ignoring all the character development he went through. Also, it's weird to end on an episode on a side character that was introduced late into the show. The finale we got actually made sense since it fits to the theme of the show, Texan family going through life in their own way.

"To Sirloin With Love" was a damn fine finale for this show. One of the central story arcs of this show was Hank and Bobby's constant failures at bonding as father and son. Then, Bobby suddenly expresses an interest in the proper way to grill cuts of meat, and just like that, he has gained Hank's eternal respect, as they finally have a hobby they can share together. What would have been even better would have been Hank smiling and saying "You know somethin', Peggy? The boy's alright."

But the problem is...they already did that in a previous episode, where Bobby actually took an interest in watching football. So Hank took him to an actual game. So...they ALREADY bonded over something. So, if anything, the finale just felt like a rehash.

@@Chimcharlover13 but again, after that episode, the show never created an episode which showed them bonding with each other over football. Also, watching that person get beat up, and the longhorns losing, bobby probably didn't do so good. But in the last episode, it assures you they'll be doing that for years.

@@campbellaviation7357 Yeah but you also get the episode where they enter the father-son shooting competition, where the tables are turned because Hank thinks he's letting Bobby down but Bobby's just happy they competed together and doesn't realize he actually carried his father, which could have given Hank a bit of sympathy and understanding from Bobby's usual viewpoint where his affection is concerned. Personally really bummed out that they never went any further with that arc afterwards, just a single later scene where they go out to the range together would have been cool at least. That's the thing with these ongoing shows, a lot of squandered opportunity to keep it going until it finally ends. Most of the characters are simply trapped in a cycle of learning valuable life lessons and bonding together only to never actually grow from the experience and immediately revert back once said episode is over as if it never happened.

I always felt like Lucky was when the show started to decline a bit in quality. I'm actually shocked to learn that he appeared in season 8. I always thought it was much later! The first 7 seasons are so beloved to me, I'm a little ashamed to admit and realize I didn't care much, for nearly half the show 😬. There were still good episodes after season 7, but I just personally felt like the feeling of the show changed, and no longer could you depend on every episode to be a masterpiece 🤷‍♂️. I don't know. I always hated it when a series ends with a pregnancy announcement. I get why that would spark an end to the series, but, with a new life on the way, it just leaves so much more as what the casts' lives would be like with a new character running around. Would the kid be a boy or a girl? What would it look like? What would it be like? But if "Lucky's Wedding Suit" was going to be the finale, they should've done a time skip on what the future holds for the Hill family. Yet, why couldn't the finale have been about Dale finding out about his wife and John Redcorn?

This would have been a much worse finale. Not because of luannes character, which was always terrible morally, but because Hank is the core of the show and he barely factors into this story. Having Hank finally find a way to connect with Bobby lets us imagine their future much better, and leaves Bobby on a better path.

You made great points. KOTH never took the easy way out in telling their stories about personal responsibility. So there was always a chance that they'd fall on their face in doing so, but I'm thankful that they tried. Very few shows do that. And its a sad irony that Tom Pettys' life was cut short by addiction.

If I would write the finale of King Of The Hill, I would have Dale figure out that Nancy has been having an affair with John Redcorn. Sirloin of love was a good send off in my opinion because it had Bobby and hank bond over the love of meat. King Of The Hill is in that weird situation since it is a animated show where the universe within the show is built off the Logic of our world. So you could make a case the proper finale would be having all the characters grow old and die.

I know this comment is really late and no one will find it but just recently, there was a deleted scene uncovered that was removed from the final cut when the show was renewed for season 12. Apparently it reveals that the entirety of the show takes place within a single year and that some episodes like the one where bill steals a tank are non canon and was a dream of bill after eating at a Hungarian restaurant. It even has a similar pan out of Arlen like In sirloin with love, even the mosquito from the first episode is seen flying off.

Remember back in the day when Luanne was a compelling character who was naive due to being brought up in a chaotic home life and being sheltered from the world around her? Me too. I hate how unlikable characters like Luanne became later on in the series. Luanne becomes infuriatingly and unrealistically dim and naive. And, in episodes like this, materialistic, greedy, selfish and even egotistical (guess that's the Platter in her). Same goes for Bill, Peggy, and even Hank and Bobby in some episodes. You know what character was the most consistently likable in the series? Boomhaur. Which is why he became my favorite character as the series went on. I can't think of an episode where he was unlikable. Honestly, I'm glad the series ended when it did. It really spiraled after Fox pushed for a more episodic formula opposed to the more character-driven formula with arcs and development for all the characters.

To be fair I don't think it was meaning to show Luanne as materialistic it was to show how she's still immature and still needs a mature figure around her. She's a bit willfully ignorant in this episode but I think it's to show just how much lucky has to change for her to help her grow into an adult with having a child and getting a house eventually etc. Almost every girl dreams of a good wedding one day, and growing up in a poor abusive family sets Luanne up for the hopes of one day a prince will come and rescue her. In her mind lucky was rich and going to take care of her. Yes it's dumb to want penguins and such but it's not out of the realm of her character to just see this as a next step not just as *gimmie Gimmie* also knowing it's going to be her best day ever, who wouldn't want it to go great? And finally I think it's just something that the show shows when you are weak in an area and are given a boost of confidence you can easily go overboard. For example that storm shelter episode with Bill. A man who is usually the butt of the joke, many people find annoying or childish is given the role of in charge of a huge number of people. They cheer and smile boosts him with confidence and he goes overboard lying about stuff with Hank and throwing him and Kan in fake jail. To me it's the same with Luanne. A girl who was poor her whole life and was always told she'd never have anything extravagant (even if reasonably by Hank) is given an opportunity to do a legal action to just easily get more money. I don't see Luanne as being materialistic in this sense I see her as being still childish. She of course cares about Dale! But when you're told you can get more and more and more she can easily be persuaded to think it's okay because insurance will cover it. Doesn't make her actions right, but I think it is interesting!
