I was a probation officer in north London in the late 70s/early 80s. One of Madness’s crew appeared in our local magistrates’ court on some minor offence and the whole band turned up in court to offer him moral support.

Madness were a group who never took themselves too seriously but made some fantastic songs in their time. They are firmly entrenched lovingly in the heart of UK music history.

When a new Madness single came out we all couldn't wait to see the accompanying video. They always made fun videos

As a kid madness was on the radio all the time. But “our house” is a great song and so is “baggy trousers”. Try them for a reaction or do a double madness video.

The Specials Too Much Too Young and Ghost Town are lyrically wonderful

My god, had forgotten about this little gem. Loved Madness back in the day (80s).

Two-tone is as important to British music as Britpop. The Specials, Madness, Selecter, the Beat, Bad Manners. You'll find lots to like.

Well they influenced a lot of britpop acts blur and menswear in particular. Madness and the selecter also had a big influence on no doubt.

It's funny, I was just thinking that if you added Ennio Moricone to this track you get The Coral.

Embarrassment is another great song of theirs with lyrics telling the true story of when Lee the saxophone player's sister became pregnant with a black man's child and the reaction of the family to the news. Their attitude wasn't great,but that changed once the baby was born

I always loved their darker stuff, like Embarrassment, but also Cardiac Arrest and Grey Day.

Still touring after 40+ years. You need to watch their live videos, their known as the nutty boys for a reason. Embarrassment or land of hope and glory are great tunes. This song is usually the last they perform and all their kids often join them on stage. Epic band.

Put this on at any wedding reception and watch everyone go nuts! Great stuff 😊

Totally agree i did play it at a wedding reception the groom best man and rest of the rugby team all in tuxes all dancing together copying this video……crowd watching on hysterically laughing, best fun in ages.

One Step Beyond was how it started for Madness and I'd suggest you go for that next before moving on to Our House, Embarrassment or Baggy Trousers. Way to go!

There's a strong theme in British pop of silliness, it crops up all over the place like Queen's video of I want to break free. For a different type of music try the Pogues playing Dirty Old Town. A song about a Northern town in England written by a Scot and played by a band from London that's Anglo Irish.

Absolutely love The Pogues, went to see them twice first time was magical , listened to the last song Fairy tale of New York and as we came out of the venue it was snowing in Birmingham, U.K. The second time was terrible, The band were over an hour late, Shaun McGowan came out as pissed as hell and could hardly sing so we left early but I still love them!❤️ A pair of brown eyes, A rainy night in soho, Irish rover, Dirty old town ….. x

Oh I'm so glad you guys went back to Madness, you need the videos to truly get them. They were such a big part of growing up in the 80s in the UK, relentlessly good, Ska masters! (and Gwen Stefani was a massive fan growing up in the US too, odd fact).

The ultimate party band, a few beers down your neck and then get down to some two tone Dad dancing.

You've gotta listen to Baggy Trousers, a fast and fun Madness song!

Madness just make me feel good. They are part of the furniture in the UK. They’ve written some of the best pop tunes of my lifetime. Great musicians and great fun. Can’t imagine life without them!

Put a smile on my face, I was a big madness fan as a young kid.

Madness were known as the Nutty Boys an entry for someone young into the two tone scene. I was 8 years old at the time of the Mod\2Tone\Ska revival. Ska was the precursor to Reggae by the way :-) At that time we also had post punk Mod Revival bands like the Jam who aimed to sound like early Who and The Kinks and The Small faces. Britain at that time was going through a phase of youth rebellion again like the 60s.

Can`t help but smile at madness. Can I suggest "Jollity Farm" by the Bonzo Dog Band?

One Step Beyond is my favourite Madness song.

Many people in the 🇬🇧 have followed Madness for over forty years and there still putting out concerts, I still rock like you two when Madness comes on.

Madness songs always great fun and you can tell they all were mates. Listen to embarrassment, its actual really sad when you learn it was written by the sax player about how his sister was shunned by her family for having a baby with a man of a different colour. How about Up the Junction by Squeeze or Happy Hour by The Housemartins.

Love this song. Love how it speads up, one of my favorite groups.. Went to Scotland on a LDS mission in Feb 1979 and went from KISS, Van Halen Art Garfunkle to this the Specials, Sad Cafe, Roxy Music, Dead Kennedys etc. LOVED them all. But especially Madness and Level 42

Madness were / are an institution. Born out of the same ska / Two Tone movement around 1979 as the Specials and The Selecter, they became their own thing and made millions of people happy with mostly jaunty and fun ska based music. There's a lovely free exhibition on in Coventry about Two Tone and the bands and fans who made a whole scene in the late 70's early 80's. Selecter still gig and are a great night out for dancing, Madness have recorded new material and tend to play big crowd gigs /festivals whilst The Specials now only consist of the members who at one point left to be the Fun Boy Three, they've had a recent album out, not sure if they are touring. Saw the Specials a few years back at, I think, Cheltenham Racecourse when there was more of the original band still around with a bunch of geezers the same age or so as me and they were great!

Had the best of times dancing to Madness. The song would come on and everyone wld dive onto the dance floor and mimic madness moves on the vid. So much energy and fun...

The Prince is their tribute to Prince Buster, one of the original ska singers. Check out the original Jamaican ska, Toots and the Maytals, Harry J, and if you really want to explore, Dennis Alcapone did a fantastic track a few years ago with Nereus Joseph, No Peace. Its truly epic.

You could turn a dead crowd in a pub into the start of great night with a little bit of Madness.

Early madness were in with two tone . A blend of pop and reggae. The specials. The beat. Selector. Totally game changing groups.

Got into Madness pretty late around 1985 and have loved them since. Good to see they're still performing live gigs.

"The Beat" were a group in the same vein at the same time. Not with the comedy element so much, but perhaps more in tune with the original Jamaican SKA, well worth checking out chaps!

Our House is their biggest hit, pretty much an anthem, along with It Must Be Love.

It must be love. Slightly mellow Madness but one of their best songs.

It's all started with the The Prince then there was Baggy Trousers,Grey Day,Shut Up,One Step Beyond,Tomorrow just another day, sweetest Girl,Driving in my car,Uncle Sam.......so many great songs and 98%will put a smile on your face.

Though they apparently never took themselves seriously? They absolutely worked at that time,we had the Specials who were rebels with a cause.lol.UB40 were amazing, we had the Beat etc.so we needed Madness to just have some fucking fun in Thatchers glory years were daydreaming was more common than work.

When this was released and it first came on Top Of The Pops , I thought it was ridiculous, but not until recently that my band decided to cover this did I realize that it was pure brilliance and these guys are very talented musicians having a blast and getting paid for it. Incidentally, we are a three piece - guitar bass & drums and this number goes down a storm at the end of a Madness medley - House of Fun - Baggy Trousers and Night Boat. Notice at the start of the video how the sax appears to blow the palm leaves - that's pure Madness for you!

And they are still doing concerts! I saw them playing only 3 weeks ago 😁

Their live shows were just like a big party 😃 Madness videos are brilliant - usually done "on the cheap" the cameras often just kept rolling to get fun shots of them ..... "Our House" is great, "Shut Up" (the video) is very funny and "Baggy Trousers" & "One Step Beyond" are classics .... 😃
