Congratulations, Joy, on your new channel. Randy, can you do a video featuring, “So, you’re moving to Chiang Mai, where you going to stay the first 1-2 weeks (3 various budget options, all having pool and fitness) while searching for your long-term stay?” I think that would be a great, helpful video

Thanks for the suggestion. Joy and I have a loooooong list of video ideas, and yes, one of them is like your great suggestion... your first few months (we were thinking months not weeks as it takes that long to get a feel for the city and decide where to live). Hopefully coming to a theater near you soon! Haha. Best wishes.
You should go see Rob and Joy at the Hideaway bar next to the Melia Chiang Mai Tower. Great bar. Nice people.

Thank you for watching and your nice words. I have it on good authority you travel the world even more than me!
I am knackered. Need a day to recover. One Nimman is a Piazza. You don't need to go to Italy . Tell us how many people were in the cinema,more than a dozen? I'm surprised cinemas still exist, the air conditioning alone would make them bankrupt How about the cost of getting to the hiking location? Do you realise there are several museums in CM? You should visit an authentic French Cafe, L'Opera.. they have the best croissants in the World but sell out by noon .
@RetiredGlobalLife
10 ай бұрын
I've been going to L'Opera for years off and on, a nice Franchman chef and his Thai wife own it and I get to practice my semi-fluent French from living a year in France. And if you ever use their restroom there ou will get a peek in the back at their kitchen. Spotless, like a surgical suite. Haha, yes, the over air-conditioning drives me nuts, in theaters, and every Grab I ever take. I have to bring a long sleeved shirt to wear in the theaters. It's not enough to be pleasant, it has to be freezing. I don't understand the thinking but US theaters are the same. If you are into museums check out my video I did with my daughter, titled Secret Treasures or something like that. I bet you have not been there - really out of the way - but free and a wonderful place to visit. Take care and come again.
Guys this was great viewing, thanks for sharing, Chiang Mai is a Gem of a place I hope to spend a few days there in September... TC

watdee.....Been watching ur YT channel for 2 days, used up 3 pens to take notes. Excellent videos. Quick question ❓ If rentals are less expensive on long term...do they issue a lease, if not how is the price locked in? Congrats Joy on having your own YT channel.
@RetiredGlobalLife
Ай бұрын
Yes, you get an actual lease. And renting are so much smarter than buying. If no lease then the rent is not locked in. Rent would only likely increase much if you are renting someone who uses it as an AirBNB and wants the higher rent of the high season.
Wow you can really stretch a dollar over there!

For sure. It makes everything more fun when it is so cheap. No pause to decide to do it or not.
As an American, I'd love to see a video of the tipping etiquette over there. I'm so programmed as a Yank to want to throw in some extra bhat for those workers. Just curious how that works. Great video!
@RetiredGlobalLife
10 ай бұрын
Love you books. Sorry, I could not resist. Basically there is no tipping especially in restaurants. Maybe a little for massages. If any tipping it is "tipping up" meaning to round up, so if a dinner bill is 285, you might pay 300 and leave the 15 baht (about 45 cents). That is just how it is. I once left a very large tip because I was so happy with the food and service the waitress came running after me, thinking I'd left my money on the table. No joke.

What supermarkets do they have at the Maya Shopping Mall?
@RetiredGlobalLife

@@coreyworthingtonii9230 They have the RimPing market on the ground floor. Actually I guess it would be considered the basement. That is a chain with higher-end food, popular with Westerners, where they can find a lot of imported goods, from Ritz crackers to Skippy peanut butter, etc.

Any tipping for good service?
@RetiredGlobalLife
4 ай бұрын
Tipping is always welcome. A small number of restaurants will add 10%. This seems to be a new thing and hopefully it is going to the staff not the owners. Most of us round up and that is a tip making everyone happy. That is for restaurants. At places like massages it is essential to tip as their salaries are super low. I'd say 100 baht is a minimum, even if that is 33% of a 300 baht massage.
Hi mate, Is there any vaccinations you found were necessary before heading to stay in somewhere like Chiang Mai long term? Like, is rabies a genuine concern from the Soi dogs? What about hepatitis? Or is it basically the same as if you were living in Australia or the US?
@RetiredGlobalLife
10 ай бұрын
I have not done any special vaccinations. But I'd recommend buying a lot of Picaridin for mosquitos as they carry disease and it's more of an issue than in the US. If you want to avoid DEET, it is just as good without them smell and possible risks. I did a video on it. But it cost 4X as much in Thailand, not yet popular there. Re soi dogs, we all see them all the time and they bark to be territorial, but I've not heard of them biting anyone. But if you have a dog and you are walking it by other soi dogs, then maybe that could cause them to be disagreeable.

Yes, Cheryl, in Chiang Mai at the top of street signs is the street name in Thai characters and below in English (although still a mouthful, haha). Same with tourist attractions on road signs, usually also in English letters. I never noticed when in the rural areas if it is the same with street signs but in the city, no problem.

I have noticed in all your videos you are un-shaven always some stubble, why? That is not a good example for the Thai people to see westerners like this, you don't see them that way right?
@RetiredGlobalLife
10 ай бұрын
Haha, very funny. I assume you are joking. Westerners and Thais are different and it is not an insult or a bad example. A bad example is being rude or inconsiderate or ignorant. I am sure no Thais see a westerner with a beard, short or long, and think anything negative at all. What they surely care about, as would any sane person, is if they are treated with respect, and if their city is appreciated.
