I have memories of my father trying to saw a 1X12 into a 1X8 and his efforts to saw a straight line. It made fair firewood but was shaped closer to a snake's path through a patch of weeds. He was NOT a woodworker -- or any other kind of creator. He could repair most mechanical things but wood and hand tools were totally another nationality to him. Never were able to use that saw again - it had so many kinks and bends in it, it could never saw anything more than a dowel if you were lucky. I have always had a fear that I would never be able to saw anything myself so I avoid handsaws.... Yay, power tools!

Your first winding sticks can be obtained free from Home Depot. They keep them in the paint section. They call them paint stir sticks, 5 gallon (18-19 litre) paint stir sticks. But Jame's Roubo Winding Sticks are way cooler. A great project.

I recently made a set of three. The stands in maccasor ebony as well as one stick in ebony. The other two sticks were made of figured maple. In use not only can I see twist but also high spots easily. It’s a little more work but I think it’s worth it. The aluminum stands shown in your video would have made the project a little faster but perhaps it was best to practice. Greetings from the high plains of Texas.

I think im too simple..I stop at the 2 sticks after planing them flat and even with a little bit of sharpie for contrast.. Think that means I should branch out and try something!

I did a cheap trick that I think still uses the roubo sticks principle. I trued up all sides of the sticks, then cut off two small blocks from the ends. I just plonk the winding stick on the two blocks that I cut off. I would install magnets on the blocks and a metal strip on the bottom of the sticks if I wasn't a lazy shit 😅

same as most any other wood. how stable a wood is depends on the grain and cut far more then the type of wood.

How true will the wooden sticks be...?? Or would it be better to make them out of a laminate of some kind ???

  • @matthewcook953

If you need to be more true then use laser or machines

  • @WoodByWright

if the grain is good they will be more then true enough. and when you cut them out of one piece they will go out of true together so in that case it does not matter.

that is the joke. the first line should be "You Are Matter" but in leaving out the forms of Be it is cute sounding.
