Fully Loaded Qube Grain Train Struggling up the steep Warrenheip Bank
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
English - Here is just over 5 minutes of pure diesel sound as the fully loaded Qube Logistics Grain train from Northern Victoria struggles up the steep Warrenheip Bank on the Melbourne side of Ballarat. Nothing beats being trackside at Warrenheip for trains like this but the video will give you a bit of an idea.
The first 40 seconds is pure sound as the train starts it's climb then the train appears and the real sight and sound of G521 and heritage age locomotives B76 (Metro Trains Livery) and S313 (Victorian Railways Livery) kicks in.
It runs for over five minutes but it was worth the wait to film in very cold and windy wintery conditions.
Filmed 4th September 2017.

I remember watching trains with my brother back in the 70’s here in the US. The best part was hearing them coming! Especially in an area with lots of curves on the tracks. Love of the old E and F units. Especially with the Leslie A200 horn!!!

We are very fortunate to still have so many running around as well. Thanks for looking.
Nice to see Metro are making sure their borrowed locomotives are safe from vandals
Not so much struggling up the incline as operating within the locos' design maximum. The relatively small amount of exhaust smoke for the large tonnage being hauled indicates good quality fuel and well-tuned injectors. Most impressive!

Very impressive as two of the locos are over 50 years old and still running on a mainline freight serivce.
Hello there, sounding REALLY, great for the old locos, slowly up the grade, Cheers from NJ,,, USA

The locos were hired from CFCLA and personally I thought they were kept in pretty good order over the lease agreement considering their age.
Awesome . . .
Wow, that is one powerful train. The fact that it can move that much at all, let alone up a hill is amazing. Is it on the wrong side of the tracks? And also does it have the power to move faster once it is on a flat run or is it a slow and steady trip all the way? Another great video as always. ☺️👍

Two tracks run between Ballarat and Warrenheip, these two tracks operate as two completely separate railway lines - the northern track being mainly used by V/Line passenger trains heading to and from Melbourne, while the southern track is only used by trains headed between Ballarat and Geelong - which are almost exclusively freight services. It's a 2% grade (1 in 50). As this train originated in Northern Victoria, it's using the northern Track from Melbourne. It definitely will move faster when it gets to more level track further ahead.

Thanks for the great info Air Gunzel. It was odd for me seeing this train on the opposite side to what the usual passenger trains do and was puzzling to me as I usually only see the inner city and surrounding area trains. Makes sense to have the freight use it's own track almost exclusively as it would slow down passenger services if shared. Would be great to see this train going faster on a level track as you said. I was impressed by the fact it could even move all that at all, amazing power. Thanks again, it is always great learning new things. ☺️👍

Geelong-Ballarat was built as a double-track line from the outset in 1862, however it was singled between North Geelong and Warrenheip Junction in 1934. In 1995, the junction at Warrenheip was abolished, and line between Ballarat East and Warrenheip was reconfigured to operate as two separate parallel railways. And yeah, beyond Warrenheip Bank, the Geelong-Ballarat line has gradients as light as 1 in 212 and gentle curvature. Freight trains would make easy work of it.

I think this train has only 5 notches!
In the old days we would rev the old emd's up in neutral in the dark and you could see sparks shoot out the exhaust. Of course I would never do that now (lol) and the newer engines don't seem to do that. Good smoke show (from the emds). It's ashamed when they tag the egines, let alone the freight cars.

Wouldn’t it have been better to have 2 locomotives pulling and one pushing at the rear or am I missing something,it might have made better progress up that incline,those locomotives were certainly getting stuck in at full power without too much smoke which proves they weren’t over fuelling them to gain power.
@Schony747

Both lines are bi directional. So to get the locos behind to push the train, the locos would have had to run via Bacchus Marsh which would have been a long process due to finding a suitable path for the locos. Running via Geelong the only trains that use that line are freight and it was quicker to get the locos to the train that way
I'm only learning about this Warrenheip bank climb after watching vids on KZread as loooove steam locomotives and diesel engines. I understand it's situated near Ballarat but where exactly is it if I want to watch?? Can you tell me.. it seems such a gradient to get up for grain loads I'm sure train driver's loath it. Intrigued is understatement

My primary and secondary schools were either side of Warrenheip Bank, but closer to Ballarat. That was in the 1950s - 1960s change-over period from steam to diesel, when double headed steamers hauled wheat in four-wheeled wagons, often with another steam loco in the rear. Obviously, I didn't mind going to school with sights like that every day!
Such a Odd set up too, what I’m assuming is an SCT G or BL class, a metro B class and a VR S class.
@Schony747

The G was owned by Qube but still had SCT colours. The S was hired from Steamrail and the B from CFCLA which had the loco on hire to Metro Trains Melbourne
