Fully functional movie sword, heavily inspired by real Medieval swords - Albion Sword of Arn review

#sword #medieval #cutting
In this review I take a look at The Sword of Arn made by Albion. This sword was designed by Peter Johnsson for the 2007 movie Arn: The Knight Templar, and Albion has the rights to reproduce it as a functional sword. This specific one is on loan to me by sword friend Steve.
Despite being a movie sword, it hews quite closely to historical examples, and I think it wouldn't look out of place in the late 12th Century, bearing a resemblance to both Oakeshott types Xa and XI.

Kyle, your reviews have come a long way. I really enjoyed this one. Well done. My favorite aesthetic for this hilt would have been a steel guard and bronze pommel.

Thank you for another careful and detailed presentation. You make many good observations. Please do not hesitate to contact me whenever you prepare a review of a sword that I have designed. I would be happy to provide you with in formation, background and facts that are not already readily available on the net.

Great overview Kyle! This is a really lovely looking sword, and I think these types of early medieval swords get overlooked a bit due to preferences in fencing styles. Glad to see you enjoyed it so much and Peter’s design is hard to beat. Also thanks for the shout out! Always nice to see more dynamics charts being used :)

Thanks! As I handle more early and high Medieval arming swords, I'm really getting to appreciate their designs and use.

Great review, as always! And wow, this was a huge video! Just wanted to check, there is some confusion with multiple swords attributed to St. Maurice out there. Those crosses are present on Albion's museum line Turin sword, which is based on a different sword to the one shown at 9:17. Or perhaps that one has them as well, I'm not certain.

Thanks! I will certainly never discount the possibility of being wrong! I found that sword by going to Albion's website and looking at their St. Maurice Museum Line sword, which states the original is in Weltliche Schatzkammer. Going to that website, the one I included in the video is the only one they have any images of that is attributed to St. Maurice. It's frustrating that the picture I included is the only one they have that shows the blade - the rest focus much more on the scabbard - but since the Albion has a cross incised in the blade, I presume the one in the museum does as well.

The author of the books that the film(-s) were based on was inspired by the Saint Maurice of Vienna when he described what the sword of Arn looked like. My design of the movie sword is based in equal measure on the Vienna sword (since I kew that was the source the author drew from) and the description of the sword in the book. Designing swords for the movie was more the task of an illustrator than a sword smith: my designs had to faithful to the story as well as adjusted to work as props for the film. The sword of Arn is one of the swords that adhere most closely to surviving original swords from the period, but its aesthetics follows the vision of the author more than the example of historical swords of the period. It was still important to me to make sure that each design would be functional not only as a prop but as an actual sword, hence the involved design work for the blade and hilt so they would be ergonomic, well balanced and aesthetically plausible.

If you didn't click with the two Arn movies you should try reading the three books the movies are based on.

Hi Kyle, can you recommend any scabbards/ scabbard makers for Albion swords? I know Tod Cutler make some very good ones...due to Brexit i am open for international imports!....searching for a scabbard for my Gaddjaht... the Arn sword is a "meh" for me....as you said: designed to look good on a movie screen.... The only Medieval movie i like is "Outlaw King" with Chris Pine...can recommend! greets frim Gernany!

Thanks for sharing Kyle! Special thanks to sword friend Steve for for loaning it to you 🤘 personally I've never gravitated towards the templar motif, but theres no denying this sword is a absolute beauty. I would gladly add one to my collection. If someone wants a sword with a bronze hilt and some snazzy designs, that handles and hold up well to cutting things. 1100$ is relative bargain. This is also a pretty old product and im guessing newer collectors probably haven't seen one before so good on for pointing it out. Also on different note, props brother seriously. My girlfriend is bisexual and even being relatively heteronormative shes faced some stigma. Nothing to serious, but people say stuff like "you're dating a man and have children...You're not bisexual." Or "if you're bisexual why have we never seen you date a woman?" Its just weird. I know that's like nothing in the grand scheme of things but, it just hurts. Ya know? She hasn't even come out to her family. They're very conservative... we just sit there and bite our tongue while they go on and on about whatever BS conservative idpol video they just got force fed by Facebook's algorithm. It really upsets her sometimes. I was late to the mothers day party this year and they all ganged up her about the bud light incident. Again she is a mother. And on mother's day her family chastised her for expressing the opinion that it was a over media thing...classy.
