This might be kinda obvious, but in case someone didn't get it: The whole "It's starting to rain" metaphor is also referring to the running joke that Mustang is useless on rainy days, meaning that he feels powerless after Hughes dies.

Gracia is completely underrated for this. I guess she was like Hughes' Trisha equivalent because just how much she and their daughter mean to him despite being away a lot, working long hours. His wife and later their daughter made things more bearable. Mustang thinks Hughes is stronger than him, but I think it's only because of Gracia he can hide his pain more easily. I'm sure he also had bad days but didn't want his friend to know how much he suffers. He just wants Roy to focus on himself and get to the top so they wouldn't have needless warring and suffering within their own borders anymore.

I began watching brotherhood because of a recommnedation from a friend, so the only thing I knew about the series was that her favourite character dies pretty early on. After seeing episode 8 I thought Scar was dead and shrugged the warning off, since I thought he must have been her favourite and I didn't even like him that much, thinking Roy and Hughes were way cooler... Four episodes later, this song played and I died.

What I absolutely loved about this scene is the duality we see coming from Mustang. On one hand, he's putting up the typical facade that "men don't cry. Ever." when he lies about the rain. But on the reverse side of it, it's admitting how completely helpless he feels right at that moment due to how his alchemy works. (Please note, I was in fact barely holding tears back until we see Hawkeye consoling Mustang. That's what pushed me over the edge for tears)

I have never bawled for a side character like I did for hughes. Oh my lord. ;w; This song hits me so deep - not only was he a beloved Husband and Father who loved his family more than anything, he was an intelligent and competent member of the Military who believed in Ed and Al, and all that they were doing. He believed in them at times where sometimes the other characters wouldn't, and he went out in a way that shook us all to the core. He will be missed, as one of the best side characters in anime history. Because who thought they'd kill him off? Even if you guessed it, did you really think that they'd do it? Ugh... it hurts so much. The storytelling in Brotherhood is so beautifully scripted - in both the anime and the manga.

Hughes' death is a curious one isn't it? I was about to cry during the thing anyway, but his daughter just pushed me over into actual tear territory. What's weird is I spoiled myself by looking on Tv Tropes, but I never expected them to play it for all it's tragedy. I guess that's what's different about Hughes. Unlike series' like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, where the bodycount of main characters is equal to Enterprise crewmen, you see them all a dead (wo)men walking and are apathetic. Particularly in Game of Thrones, where your kind of apathetic as to who lives or dies, since the ones who aren't out for #1 aren't expected to live. But FMA balanced it out, and when this guy died, he was mourned. More than that, his wife and 3 year old daughter came, and seldom do those two series above have a person the character loved present and not able to understand what's going on, and seldom does that make the stoics visibly tremble. Whether you agree or not, It IS a horrible day for rain.

My grandma died about a month ago. A friend of mine who I invited walked up to me (this was outside, by the way, it was a pretty fair day out) and I suddenly remembered FMA: B and I said: "Why did it have to be raining out?" My friend looks over and says "It's not raining, though." He didn't notice that I was crying, but then I said "No... it is. It really is."

This song and scene are what a military funeral can be like in the real world - often a young family is involved, complete with one or two young children trying to understand why they are even there. The young wife and mother -the gunshots reverberating throughout the bodies of the attendees -the senselessness of a young father being taken from his loved ones. Oh how unfair - "he was a good man, a good father and a good soldier" - this scene has been played out for millennia and never gets easier. The creators of FMA/FMAB were spot on - and it never gets any easier to watch. It always rains.

Never cared much for Hughes as a character. Was always an annoying side character to me, but he became a favorite of mine. That last stand against Lust and Envy, hidden knives, pure bravery. I shed more than a tear on his funeral scene.

Many animes and mangas never get a proper ending either, this is why SAO and FMA are two of my favourite all time anime/mangas, they had a story to tell and they told it, with no padding or filler. There's something satisfying about that, when you're left wanting more it means a series is successful, and far better than wishing it had ended before it got tedious.

Hughes was a great character. It was more in-depth in the first series. And I really became emotional with the funeral scene AND the scene after: where Ed sees Hughes on a train platform he passes, waving goodbye. The final nail to the coffin =(

I felt they handled the pacing of the early episodes much better. In fact, I usually watch the first two episodes of FMA in place of the first episode of FMAB. I also felt considerably more touched by (**spoiler**) Hues' death in FMA than I did in FMAB.

OriginalTharios What I meant was, that it portrays the characters emotions better, and has one of the best explanations for homunculous. And dat ending. Many fans hated it, but I really liked it, the movie was perfect for FMA.

  • @pelucheCR7

***** I think the homunculus in the first series were underwhelming, while I do like the efact the fact that they came from transmutations, the whole concept was half assed, due to the fact that we never actually got to know about greed's, pride's, and gluttony stories. Envy had one but it was done poorly IMO as it was only referenced and not gone through in depth. Wrath's story was pretty boring and plot hole riddled, Sloth's and Lust's stories were the only ones done well. Overall I prefer much of their counterparts of the manga, like greed, wrath, envy, pride and gluttony but like more sloth and lust in the 2003 anime.
