Full Tour of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA | Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

In today's video, we did a tour of the famous Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia and wanted to show you exactly what that is like. Now the tour is a very long tour. It’s 2 hours and it is all walking so be sure to come prepared. We got our tickets through the City Tour app and took a Lyft ride to the cemetery, as it isn’t located in downtown Savannah. The cemetery became very popular after the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil came out and then it was also featured in the movie. It’s the largest of the city’s cemeteries. There is a ton of history here. Our tour guide knew a lot and was knowledgeable about everything. The singer, songwriter Johnny Mercer is buried here, the cover photograph of the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil with the Bird Girl was taken here, and one of the most photographed spots features Gracie. There is a lot to see and a lot to take in with all the history featured here. They even show us where the term saved by the bell comes from, including an original grave bell. Overall, it was a great tour. It was a very long time and a ton of information but you learn a lot and see a lot. Plus, it is worth it to go at least once in your life to visit this famous cemetery. If you are looking for things to do in Savannah, Georgia, check out Bonaventure Cemetery!

This is my favorite place in all the world. I am a GA native (Atlanta area) and have visited Bonaventure too many times to count. I have photos throughout my home and make sure to visit a few times each year. I can’t explain the why of my pull towards this place. When I was a very small child I apparently pointed out a home in Savannah to my auntie and told her that I was the house I used to live in. I have no memory of this but I know I have always felt connected to the city. For me, a perfect day is spent walking through the live oaks at Bonaventure. There is a feeling of peace that I have when I am there that I get nowhere else. ♥️♥️

I have buried many people in Bonaventure during my tenure as a priest here in Savannah. It is a beautiful cemetery and well worth the visit. Downtown Savannah has two other historic cemeteries downtown The Colonial Cemetery, as well as Laurel Grove; Cemetery; both of which are historical. Laurel Grove has actually two divisions; separated now by a highway running between them; the other one is a cemetery originally for the burial of blacks; it is called Laurel Grove South. Laurel Grove South includes burial sites of slaves as well as many contemporary African Americans, including some well known civil rights leaders. Laurel Grove and Laurel Grove South are equally interesting as Bonaventure; so there several cemeteries here worth seeing. I also officiated over several burials in Laurel Grove South where people are still being buried, as is true with Bonaventure. I’m not aware of any burials still taking place in the section of Laurel Grove for whites, but if so, it’s not many, as cemetery appears to be near full. All these are worth seeing. In fact, there are sections of Laurel Grove, Laurel Grove South, and the Colonial Cemetery of equal interest as Bonaventure.

Oh fun! That would have been amazing! Yeah unfortunately people destroy stuff so they moved the statue to a museum.

I went there with my family. It was so hot when we went. We didn't stay long. When we went to Savannah it was so hot like....walking in an oven. We went in May.

Hello! Great question. It’s a public cemetery so you are free to go on your own and explore! We took an Uber there which was nice because they can drop you right off there. Hope that helps!
