Just a little fun fact for you: Berry Gordy wasn't keen at all to even audition the J5 and had to be talked into it. His concern was he already had a "child act" on the Motown Label - Little Stevie Wonder who was about 13 at the time ✌

Stevie was 13 in 1964. The J-5 didn't audition for Motown until 1968. By then Stevie was high school (almost college) age and wouldn't have been viewed as a "child act." In fact, on his first single "Fingertips," he is billed as "little Stevie Wonder." Tidbit of information: I saw the J-5 live at Madison Square Garden in 1972 or 1973. We were in the last row very high up. The audience was mainly African-American. I have no idea why this was. I was about 11 or 12 at this time, and every white kid I knew loved the J-5. Also, those not familiar with the J-5's whole catalog may want to check out a song called "Maybe Tomorrow." In 1969-1971 they had a string of Top 5 hits in a row, I think their first 5 songs were top 5. At that time, only the Beatles and the Supremes had achieved this feat. Then they released "Maybe Tomorrow," a wonderful song that managed to reach only #20, making it look like a relative failure. But it is a worthwhile song that deserves to be remembered.

Michael was gifted beyond his years, like he was here before in another life. As for your "mime" there was no such thing back in the early 70's, there were no synthesized sound boards or electronic devices to enhance or cover up a "true" singer's voice. The singing was "real" and pure human voice and Michael was no exception, he was a "true singer!"

Hi Edwin, there are several catalogued miming examples that date back even earlier on shows like Ed Sullivan where the recording gets played and the band/singer just pretend to perform the song. There would be a number of various reasons for this occurring, not necessarily because of one's musical execution accuracy, sometimes for the reason of technology in live sound capture/reinforcement. What I meant was that it's a pleasure to be able to deduce that Michael and brothers were in fact performing in the examples in this video. I'm sure there would be some examples out there where they needed to mime for sound reasons, but these weren't. But thanks for the comment mate, we definitely both agree that he was a fantastic singer!

The beauty of the Jackson Five was them being discovered at the early ages thanks to their father recognizing the talent in them. I was lucky enough to see them from the beginning in 1969.

You know, Joseph Jackson, their daddy, was a tyrant. Everybody knows that so I'm not just criticizing for the heck of it. BUT, that stage presence and perfection that you keep acknowledging came straight from their daddy working the sh*t out of them before the fame came. He got them all the way to the Apollo Theater after a time of doing mostly local talent shows, which they didn't always win, and they won first place. The rest is history. Motown jumped on them like nobody's business.

Michael Jackson said he had to be perfect because every time they practice if he made one little mistake his father Joe Jackson would beat him until he blacked out, he would hear his mother begging Joe to stop saying "stop you're going to kill him" very sad. Michael Jackson had so much talent singing and dancing, he lived a very sad life but gave us so much joy.
