Full-time job, but can't afford rent

Having a full-time job doesn't mean you can afford the rent. One bus driver in California lives out of his van in a parking lot.

    @@joeybonarrigo8703 Thats because when your father was your age he could likely afford a house. Trust me I know. I tried explaining this to my grandmother who claims she worked hard her entire life to get what she has. Here are the facts. My grandmother worked part time maybe about 50% of her lifetime. This is according to my mother and my aunt which I believe. My grandfather worked as a janitor in a supermarket. They purchased a house in 1990 for 70k with less than a 15k down payment. Today? Their house is worth 600k and you would need at least a 120k down payment to even start thinking about it. After that because of outrageous property taxes, mortgage, utilities you better have at least 4k a month just to dump into housing expenses. By the time your done with the mortgage your looking at nearly 1 million dollars. Right now my grandmother lives practically for free because she rents her upstairs which has a full kitchen, living room, master bedroom, bathroom. She has the entire main floor, basement, huge driveway and garage nearly free. What did she do for a living? She worked as a part time lunch room aide at a public school. That's it. She now literally lives free as the renter upstairs from her pays in rent most of the housing expenses on her full paid off house. I could not even contemplate buying her house or one that is similar to it today because its over 4x the original price my grandparents paid adjusted for inflation and outrageous property taxes on top of it at close to $1500 a month excluding the mortgage etc. Even if I were to come up with the 120k down payment and was able to continue renting to the person upstairs I would still not be able to afford it and yet my grandparents did just fine on low paying unskilled jobs.

    Super Power I bought my house for $23k in 1975. It’s worth about $150 now. Paid for. My first apartment was $75 a month including all utilities. Our first rental house was $75 a month, plus utilities which were barely there. It staggers me to see what rents are now.

    You can't just move overnight but you can with a little bit of planning, especially if you already have a vehicle. Rent is high everywhere but CA has the lowest number of affordable housing compared to other states and that statistic alone improves your odds of finding stable housing by going outside the state. You can take the easy route by finding excuses not to do something, or take the more difficult route to start an action that will lead to real and hopefully better changes.

  • @TV-xv1le

    @TV-xv1le

    @Mike Bell Were they? Or perhaps today are we underpaid. It's not just the auto industry. Look at areas like NY. A 1br apt in a bad area is closer to 2k a month now. The average being closer to 2.5k a month. To put that in perspective you meed to make at or around 6 figures for that to be considered "affordable". That's for a tiny 600sq apt. Why is it acceptable that you need to make about 6 figures for a 600sq foot apt to be affordable. Meanwhile people where I work who are in higher up engineering positions are not even cracking 85k. Almost everyone that I work with has to work a second job to make ends meet. You cant even think of getting a house on long island here with property taxes that are 1k a month even on tiny houses with no property/land unless your pulling in 150k+ and even then things would be very tight. As in good luck on retirement. Wages have not grown nearly as fast as housing costs or rising expenses in general. My grandparents purchased their house for around 60k in 1990. In today's dollars its roughly double. Except now their broken down house is worth around 600k and closer to 1.2k+ in property taxes. You would need 150k downpayment and I would argue a minimum of another 50k-75k saved on the side in case of "shit happens". Meanwhile their house was purchased originally with a 10k downpayment and they managed to pay the rest off quickly.

    The times have changed, I had to build a tiny home so I can afford to save up for retirement. I know I'll probably be single forever because its hard to have a relationship when you live in 250 sq.ft. but I try not to worry because at least it'll be easier retiring single than married and not having any rent and only having to pay for property tax. You have to make your own rules in life, you don't need to buy a home for 250,000 when you can build your own for 40,000 and you don't have to worry about fire insurance because you can haul your home away from the fires and you can insure them because the insurance companies know it's low risk and costs less.

    There are people willing to pay the price to live there. Rent control means government control which is what they want, control over all of us. (Agenda 21). Once they control everything, then they control us. Incrementally, that's how they do it. A little bit at a time. On the other hand, my question is how can they be charging so much to live in an area that is now an open sewer? Wouldn't that lower the values? It's a situation that is out of control with no solution.

    how is that ripping people off, would you want to have your wages limited because some people thought that you were paid too much, if you had a six hundred thousand dollar mortgage on your home and you had to rent it you can't make it by renting it for less than your mortgage and other expenses. obviously there are those that can afford it or the rents would not be as high as they are The rental market dictates the rent not just greed, if a greedy man wanted to rent a house for $10,000 a month and there were other similar homes renting for $3000 he would have to lower the rent to stay in business.

    I used to sleep in the same parking lot :) Santa barbara is about 60% the cost of manhattan, except the construction policies of santa barbara make developing real estate for space-constrained, lower income housing non-viable, so a person is generally left to compete for one of the few studios, or rent a bedroom. Frankly, on this man's salary, a bedroom might be his best option if he was going to rent something. But why pay for rent when you can sleep in your vehicle and shower at the 24 hour fitness that's 2 blocks away?? Not to mention how close he is to the MTD bus station where he works! Semi-affordable rents are about an hour outside town. It's not that full time jobs make it so you can't afford rent in Santa Barbara, but you can't rent much! It's a tough town. that's why I moved. Some of the world's best weather though. If I had 2 million to blow, I'd buy a house there. Oh wait...the property taxes...nevermind.

    The normal rules of supply and demand are that if there are more people than housing units available, you either raise the prices on the few units available or you build more housing to meet the demand. Building more units will drop prices so that more people can afford them. Unfortunately, California has a really bad NIMBY (not in my backyard) problem. Thus, normal houses are being sold for $1 million.

    CA welcomes illegals with open arms but those same illegals depress wages by over-supplying the labor force and taking on jobs for lower pay than what non-illegals would do them for. Depressed wages make it harder for "middle-class" people to afford a comfortable "middle-class" lifestyle. I'm not saying illegals are the root of the housing problem in CA but they do play a big role in it.

    Something is wrong with this picture!!! I worked a part-time job at 20 hours a week $8.50 an hour back in 2016..... And was able to keep a roof over my head.... Pay my electric bill and purchase my bus pass to be able to get to work....... My rent was only $350.00 on a modest 1 bedroom apartment...... I learned a lot that year!!!!!!! ☺️ Lucky I was not in New York, California, Seattle where the cost of living means you can't have a roof over your head!!!!

    I make $16 an hour. Work 10 hour days and have barely enough for rent. If I didn't have a skill set to do side jobs I'd be homeless for sure. Funny thing is I went to school, I train and study every day, and help others any chance I get. I starve out most days,but my boss at work has enough to eat out daily drink beer on the job, and talk down to everyone. But watch as soon as I get car repairs business going. They will be doing the work themselves.

    You shouldn't have to be working for a major tech company with a 4+ year degree to live. Sure, you shouldn't make as much as those doing so, but you should at least be able to scrape by. To anyone who disagrees, this is how life worked 50 years ago. Boomers from college-educated to manufacturing and trade workers were able to buy property. Now you're lucky if you can rent solo.

    I’m in this boat! I work full time, I am educated and still can’t afford rent. The only debt I have is a student loan. The average low end rent around Atlanta is 1100-1200 per month. I make 1600. I rent one room in the basement of a mans house with no heating or cooling for 600.00. It’s beyond depressing.

    First of all, what's wrong with the wife? How come she's not working? Secondly, they should be able to save a nice amount of cash if they're not paying rent, considering his income. If they're able to do that, they should find a place real soon.
