Full Rollers -

Спорт

It's #MoMonday!
This week, Mo Pinel talks about Full Rollers and how they will be less effective after the USBC rule banning balance holes goes into place on August 1st, 2020. He also will talk about how to convert a Full Roller to a 3/4 roller using Performance Fitting.

I was told I was a full roller until I got a second opinion. The second opinion measured my PAP and we drilled the ball to fit my release style. I'm happy to say that I am now tracking outside of my fingers and thumbs!

I'm a full roller in 2023. I bowl finger tip still, like only to the nail. I have a rev rate of about 400 now. Basically the highest rev rate in a full roller.

I bowl no thumb one handed and I tried shifting my finger pitches 7/16" to the right. The ball didn't feel significantly different in my hand or at release but my PAP moved a bunch and my track would have easily been inside the thumb hole if there was one. My tilt decreased as well but not to zero. I stopped using those pitches. The decrease in tilt was not desirable.

Trying not to spin the ball too much, I higher my track a lot when I was still a one handed bowler. Though never became a full roller at that moment. I accidentally became a two handed full roller while starting to pick up spare with house ball. Mainly as a way to practice my two handed bowling. I guess it happened because I was rolling my hand side way too much and too early to creat sharper hook spot.💦 Now became a hybrid bowler. I almost forgot how to spin the ball without my thumb (two hand). It became a bad habit, but it sort of work while having decent rev rate and able to “tame” or tune down the ball. Sound weird maybe🙈 but I have to force myself not the rotate the ball too early, if necessary. If I am to totally cut my two handed full rolling habit, I may have to decrease the importance of my ring finger or brain wash myself as you said.

I believe I'm a 2 hand no thumb full roller since my track goes along where you showed but I do cock my wrist and play so much of the back part of my bowling balls I mainly throw getting a lot of rev rate and rpms off my release. Is that okay since I do get strong down lane motion and my miss rights are forgiving?

I am a Full Roller and use pin past PAP layouts with great effectiveness. Putting the pin past the PAP prevents the core from being turned upside down. I have found a few cores that totally counteract if you turn them upside down and drill them with the conventional 3 3/8" layout Mo mentioned. They become dead balls, no flare and no dynamics. The pin can be put anywhere from on your pap, to 3 3/8" past your PAP, as long as you can keep the ball static legal. Just another layout option for Full Rollers.

Mr. Pinel, what do u mean by “turning” the ball; instead of “lifting” the ball? Coaches say to come up from behind the bowling ball. Now I’m confused on “turning” the ball; is it still the same as coming up behind the ball?

Mo believed in rotating the axis (get around it) and getting it down on the lanes early to maximize flare. Up the back minimizes ball reaction potential.

My rev is 180-200, speed avg 13 as I have reduced it due to lumbar pain problem, PAP 4.5. Can you please you please suggest a strong backend layout as I do understand I have full role? You might try Tom Smallwood's half thumb release. I used to be in your position (low-revolution, suitcase release full roller) and after trying and failing at almost everything else, I found the half thumb to be quite easy to pick up and execute. it's kickass. It feels like a magic cheat that adds about two hundred or more extra revs compared to where you started. Your fingers will look and feel funny when you grip the ball, but you'll have way more revs, power and versatility. You'll be able to play way deeper than you've ever played before. Experiment with it the next time that you bowl.

Mo, I did a session with you in Richmond a few years back but now that i've gotten older have had a full roll release for a few years. We've been experimenting with a layout we heard about that puts the pin 6 3/4" from center grip (1:30 pin position (on symmetrics ONLY)) and I find that this gives me a lot better length and backend. My other symmetrics that use the generic full-roll layout tend to be too early and most roll-out on me. Can you give your input and insight on this 6 3/4" from center grip layout as I can't find anything on it online. Thank you...

I'm almost 38 years old and have been bowling my entire life and for the first time I think I'm hearing something that I've always been told NOT to do. Am I hearing Mo correctly? I could've sworn he just said in order to generate more hook with the ball or more flare it's best to SPIN the ball instead of LIFT to get more rotation? I was always told to NEVER put un-natural spin on the ball and that you get the ball to spin/hook through the LIFT and the ball coming off the fingers naturally. So are these Pros actually cranking the hell out of their hand and spinning the ball to get the rev rate they achieve? I'm so confused.. 209 average by the time I was only 18 years of age and now I feel like I got it all wrong...

@@NoSkilljutsu I do this not because I want to, but because often times I get drag on the right side of my thumb if it's fully inserted into the ball until the skin tears open raw if I don't. This is due to me not finding a really good PSO to drill my newer balls and they rush the process leaving me with 5 different balls and all 5 feel completely different from one another despite being drilled by the same PSO.

@@coreyculp4833 yeah I'm familiar with Smallwood. I don't know how he does it either although I can see it happen since he has a unique release with his thumb positioned. I just never could do it. My track is about 1" left of both fingers and thumb as a right hander. My release is similar to PDW / Malott with about 400 rpm. But yeah my flaring rings covers a large part of the ball. I guess you could say I have a heavy roll with angular axis tilt. Definitely requires me to use weaker equipment on house shots though.

  • @MrThinkImPossible

I doubt it. How are you or they holding the ball without a thumb hole? They way a full roller holds the ball during the swing , without a thumb the ball will fall to the ground. Full roller have the thumb on the side of the ball during the swing. Now if you are a thumbless bowler and think you are a full roller , then that is merely a release issue. Like Mo mentioned , turning the hand and releasing differently.

I’ve been bowling my whole life, but somehow went from having 10 degrees of tilt to being full roller. I guess I started lifting the ball more? Idk. I still have a decent ball motion without balance holes or surface changes and have been averaging in the 210-220s lately. If the thumb hole is too big, could that cause unnecessary lifting of the ball because you are trying to grip it too much?

  • @Mastadon909

    @Mastadon909

    4 жыл бұрын

With a thumb hole that's too big, you naturally compensate your grip by squeezing the ball to hold on to it especially on the backswing and at the top of the swing. You would think that the looser the thumb fits the quicker you can get your thumb out to create revs however if it's too loose you squeeze the ball and your release becomes inconsistent.
