At Hammerwood Park in Sussex we use a sister model to this barless, with bars, a Broadwood of around 1905 and pianists respect it enormously. Whilst relying on a Bechstein for most concerts, the Broadwood is lighter weight for us to move around, outside onto the terrace, or last weekend up to the Village Hall for a jazz recital. Sometimes Broadwood actions can be heavy and we installed a set of springs strategically into the heart of the action which lightened it greatly. The secret of the evenness of tone at the break is the distance from the bottom of the bridge at the tenor to the rim being the same as the distance of the bridge at the top of the bass to the rim being the same.

Allegedly, Beethoven’s favourite piano maker. They’ve got lovely key geometry.

I love the look of the harp, no bars. The tone reminds me of Yamaha, bright.

I used to play one of these at school but reckoned my 40” Broadwood upright was better. It’s still going strong but has recently been joined by a Yamaha U3M.
