I know this is a minority opinion and so I just have to live with it, but I'm so over the Format. I feel like it was OK for a short term bit, but it loses all interest in repetition and I actually kind of hate the way it makes me feel. I may start skipping Format videos.

@@autinlee3964 As far as I know it doesn't have a strict definition, but it's the videos where they have generally more chill -- slower speech speed, calmer voice etc.-- and walk around their space more, and also use microphones farther from the camera to show where they are. I think of it as, like, remembering everyone's physically people and not just floating heads-to-upper-chests.
I love the subplot of this video, which is John's antagonistic relationship with his camera's focus.

Oh god, real question; is this a small channel? It's literally the biggest one I know about, but I keep getting hit with nagging clues that I'm viewing only the tiniest corner of the internet. To my mind, 50k subs is big, 1m is titanic, and 4m is internet royalty. Same thing with spotify; 30k big, 100k huge, 1m is too big to ever play a venue I'd want to go to... then I find an artist with 200m monthly listeners, then I see someone suggest that 200m is a normal number for a small indie artist. I feel I have stumbled my way to the edge of something I am not prepared to reckon with.

@@Sasstronaut42 it’s a real thing! It’s a big reason as to why they perform so well. When you feel bad you should want to change your environment around you. Most people just numb their emotions with TV (or KZread in this case), podcasts, video games, etc. None of those things can contribute to a greater change in your environment resulting in a potential better tomorrow, they just numb the negativity of today. Like if you’re failing tests left and right you try not to identify with it and say something like “I am a failure. I’m only going to keep failing. I’m stupid. I can’t do this.” You instead say “I am underperforming right now, I’ll study harder starting now.” You recognize that you can express some form of control over your local environment and seek to change your behavior.

“The opposite of anxiety isn’t calm, it’s creativity”
Around the same time Hank was diagnosed with cancer, my grandmother was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer, which we also found out two days after my wife and I closed on our first house. I remember Hank's diagnosis feeling like the the second gut punch in the one-two punch. She unfortunately lost her battle in November, but she lived such a full, long life and never lost who she was. Mimi was an educator before she retired to take care of my uncle, my mom, and my aunt, and was sharp as a tack to the end. She was artist, a weekly Bridge player, and always on the lookout for new games and activities to keep her mind working. Telling stories with my sister and me when we were kids, taking us on trips, teaching us to bake, golf, and paint, and so much more. She cared and loved and served, and always sought to help others. John and Hank, you two embody so much of who she is and what she stood for. The world is a better place for having the two of you in it, and Mimi too.

Rhythmically too, even. Daaah Daaah and Dahdah Dah. It's a 2:3 polyrhythm: the most common one in all of music :D
I don't listen to podcasts much (Dear Hank & John being the only pod I listen to regularly) but a crash course about the universe is exactly up my alley. I'll definitely add it to my long list of 1 podcast subscriptions.
"It doesn't make me happy, exactly, it makes me conscious of being alive" - this is the first Vlogbrothers video I've watched in 10 years and I am hit in the gut. As a working artist, this.
John was HERE THE WHOLE TIME? That's changing the game.
“Make me work life balanced, but not yet” is the quote I live by as a creative.
Doing more rather than less when there's so much already happening is such a mood and being fueled to do more when there's already SO MUCH TO DO... is very much a description of my entire life.
The act of things making you feel ‘conscious of being alive’ is probably the best way to describe it. Its like a momentary purpose to life: I’m here to make this thing, and if I wasn’t around, it wouldn’t get made this way.
"Make me a better work-life balance.. but not yet" is very relatable
I'm sorry that you're burning your candle at both ends, John, but I'm grateful for what you do.

“GoodmorningHankit’sTuesday” is just my absolute favorite
The St. Augustine prayer hits hard. What an ironically wise and well renowned philanderer. Sometimes the gifts of our legacy follow a lifetime of mistakes
I love that when I first started watching vlogbrothers over a decade ago Hank was the science brother and John was the author brother, and now Hank has written multiple books and gone on a journey of meaning, and John is doing a science podcast. Genuinely it makes me so happy! I can't wait to see how my siblings and I grow and change and influence each other as we continue through adulthood
When I make something that comes out the way I imagined, then I actually feel happy. But when I make stuff at all, even if I'm disappointed by the quality, it always feels right.
Do we need a “x number of days since John started a new project” page now? 😂
ooo John where is John..... ooo there he is
"You can't see me" has big Cat Hiding Behind Curtain with Tail Showing energy.
I like the mild difference in shadow between the two Johns in the one shot. It's just prominent enough to notice, but not enough that John would feel the need to make it look better.
I doubt it was initially intentional to have the discussion of anxiety be out of focus, but it ended up a bold artistic choice. also I am vehemently pro Potato
Being creative making you feel alive reminded me of a related sentiment I encountered recently, that the opposite of depression isn't joy, it's expression. Which honestly sounds like a John Green quote
When John was hiding behind a plant the first thing that came to my mind was JOHN CENA and the 'you can't see me'. And then the John Cena entrance music started playing in my head - it was great!!
It's exquisitely outside focus the entire time and I love it.
Constantly checking to see if the shot is out of focus or if my bitrate has crashed... has The Format gone too far?
one of my favorite things about the format is getting to see all of Sarah's cool furniture.
It's so interesting to watch this video. I have more recently found myself shutting down to moments of future dread and that only makes it worse coz I feel like I'm just sinking basically, with nothing (not even work) to distract me
Creation is one of the few things that makes my existence consequential, which is pretty cool I guess
I resonate with this content at an atomic level. From "Dread-drenoline" to "Lord, make me chaste but not yet."
At this point, one has to wonder when that "yet" will happen - not that we, as fans, are complaining, but it's been so many years and you guys show no signs of stopping, even during the extremely hard last year... That sort of drive and work ethic is truly so enviable
My all-time favorite quote is by John Muir, “The clearest way into the universe is through the forest wilderness.” I hope that your exploration of the universe makes its way into the forest, even if indirectly, just so that you can use that quote.
"I definitely don't" Is the answer I give to many questions these days. Also, The Format is back. I love it.
"Being creative doesn't make me happy, it makes me aware of being alive." Not quite the same but ... that feeling of "It doesn't make me feel happy, it makes me feel something else that I somehow desire." is relatable to me. Though I can't put a word or phrase to the second half ... the closest I can get is saying that it's complicated.
I love how much of this video was out of focus and I didn't mind at all, because listening to John was the focus.
"have you been there the whole time?" John Green Game Changer appearance confirmed.
loved seeing the movie in person! the energy in that room was quite palpable.
I love when John becomes the science brother, i actually love it ever so slightly more than i love when Hank becomes the philosophy brothrr
Gosh darn it there’s no link in that there doobly doo The cross promotion is subtle, look carefully 😂
I've never been happier to see the format return.
Dr. Mack spoke in one of my classes I college, so I can’t wait for this *stellar* collab!!

Looking forward to The Universe podcast. I love it when people can come together and casually talk about whatever they want.
oh man this is so so exciting i want to cry so excited to hear from Dr. Mack!!!
The last thing I imagined was John getting involved in science matters, but especially the portion that concerns the largest (in literal terms) branch of science we have.
Here for The Potato.
I hope you know that I voted the format as one of my favorite kind of videos on the census, and this just makes me feel so seen
The song “ running to standstill “comes to mind right now
katie mack is so cool i’m so glad she is getting a new audience with this spectacular podcast announcement
The format, and possibly the most interesting podcast ever made? Yes please.
Universe podcast, art history crash course and now religious studies. This is literally all the top content I’ve been waiting for, for years. Thanks so much ❤
He may only have two eyes now, but be prepared. He's gonna be covered.
When John hid and said you couldn't find him was anyone else looking frantically for another hidden little john somewhere on the screen? I can't confirm that it wasn't there, but I will say I didn't find the little guy.
I think the saint Augustine prayer was weirdly inspiring. Like. It really is my goal to be satiated with life (a Danish phrase "mæt af dage") - so the prayer would be "Lord, make me replete, but not yet". I think that is quite beautiful.
All hail the Format, whoever invented it, not taking sides.
Can't wait to see your Hot Ones episode promoting Turtles
“Lord, make me not chaste. Immediately.” -St. Augusteen
Very exited about the podcast. I think experiencing the cosmos isn't just about understanding the knowledge but also about how we reflect on it and what it makes us feel. Looks like this podcast will be something similar!
I have only one like to give, but I could, I would give one each for Potato Time, The Format, and Turtles All The Way Down hype
Bahahahaha! Full Hank is such an excellent description of this video!!!
I love the idea of praying for self change, then adding not yet to the end. Haha.
Dread-drenaline is a dose of that feeling that you need to live as though you were dying. It urges us into action and creativity with our thoughts, instead of just contemplating them. It's that little jolt of how we feel when something big and consequential happens and we know our perspective on life has been permanently shifted. I believe it's a good thing to lean into that feeling, because life is short and it pushes us to stretch ourselves and do things that are not quite bucket list level, but still important to experience. It's like the difference between saying you will do something, versus promising to do it and meaning it. That extra bit of gravity that anchors us to the reality of our existance. The trick is noticing when you are about to hit that wall, and slowing your acceleration so you can get a good look at the path you are driving and pull over for a picnic instead.
