You're right, we're talking about a world where radiation mutates living things alike (except plants for whatever reason) therefore it's the reason why species like naked moles, fire breathing lizards, and two headed cows exist. A realistic nuclear war aftermath simulator would be where D.C is fairly unrecognizable after 200 years and the only objective of the game is surviving the longest duration before radiation (assuming lethal levels are still looming about) induced cancer kills you. Your theory makes sense, the supermutants did exclaim they're the future after all.

Kind of like how old movies are sometimes scarier than modern movies, because back then, artists and developers couldn't just rely on "good graphics". They had to use psychological horror and ambiance to set the eerie vibe and it just comes off as more real. Vats of Goo is a good example. The eerie warning siren in the background that emulates the sound heard right before the atomic bombs engulfed the Fallout world in fire.

I am still tempted to replay Fallout 1 and 2, but Fallout 3 and 4 looks for me not attractive, the mechanic, look and music with SFX in the original games are match better. Say Diablo III was attractive, because it keeps style of Diablo 1 and 2. That is a success for old gamers, not sure about new user market.

It's interesting to see how the newer fallout games seem to have fixated on the 1950's aesthetic and feel, to the point where the more original and interesting design elements from the first games are basically gone. A picture of a street in fallout 1 has a face carved into the building corner, which struck me as very odd, looking like some sort of art deco piece. The soundtrack, whilst of course featuring an ink spots song in the intro, are soundscapes of industrial noises, exotic instruments, and electronics, forming a unique soundtrack that the newer games seem to have replaced with 50's songs and an orchestral score. The world in fallout 1 is so devastated to the point that the player is left to try and piece together a vision of the past, or just get on with life in the wasteland. The later fallout games are full of retro songs, an entire intro set piece set in the past in fallout 4, and a generally more cheerful feeling, complete with settlement building and reconstruction. In fallout 1, there is a mystery and danger to the world that I don't feel in the later titles like fallout 4, which is generally helped on by the difficulty and repetitiveness of combat early game.

Your comment made me sad... Really... I loved the first two games, and I always felt like there was something missing in the new titles... now you made me realise what it was, and it made me sad. I really wanted to see a game like FO1 and FO2 remade with the technology we have today... it would be amazing. Problem is, FO4 was a success, even if it didn't follow the last two games style, which means they won't change it much from this. They won't risk their investments in a new game that can or cannot please the masses. They'll keep on the track they're getting more money with... which is sad... really sad.

I've taken it to mean that these people are so stuck on surviving, they don't have room to progress. Look IRL: the only times we've ever been able to progress in life was during times of relative safety from the elements. War is a totally different thing, since that will always bring developments, but if you're worried that you're going to get your heart blown apart by a radscorpion sticking you through the chest the minute you step outside, then you're not going to be worried about painting the house or making nice bed sheets, or creating nicer technology, etc.

Desert Wind - Climbing out of the safety of your vault that was buried under heaps of rubble from the Mountain Pass, you feel the scorched Earth's dirt brushing against your forearms and cheeks as you pull yourself up closer and closer onto the peak. You wonder what you will see as you reach the mountain top but, as you pull yourself up onto the surface, what lies before you strikes you, paralyzes you in a heart wrenching, gut churning way. Nothing but pure devastation all around you for untold miles of Earth's landscape. The mountain range that the Vault was once built in are all that remain somewhat intact. The dark loomy brown skies, the cold wind and the dirt and dust that followed with it impact your exposed skin, almost feeling like burning needles as you stared into the Wasteland. Towards the east, you look at a nearby city that was a fossil of its former self. Skyscrapers that managed to hold itself were rotting away, bending itself and you could swear there were creatures inside even from a distance. Debris, Rubble of torn and bent metal and rock with fires somehow still aflame. What in the hell happened? No, more importantly, what in the hell did Man do to this once thriving community, a living environment that now looks like the surface of something akin to war-torn Mars? You feel around your hip to find the Vault-Tec 10mm Pistol you managed to snag before venturing out and take a good look around you. Nothing but emptiness and lots of death. Everything just looked dead and hostile. You hear a sudden noise and draw only out of fear, your senses sharper than knives as you're still in bewilderment and horror. You spy what looked like a cockroach but... it was unusual. It was... huge. A bug that looked like it could eat a small dog on its own and it didn't seem to like you very much. You point your 10mm and shot at it, but the damn thing was still alive! It charges you, so you fired half a magazine out of fear while backing away, half a magazine of precious ammunition before the thing was ripped in pieces by your weapon. As you blink and try to calm your nerves, you hear clapping from someone. Another person?! You turn to see a man, a man who looked like Hell and raised by it, molded by it. Strapped with leather and armor plates with what looked like a poorly constructed AK on his back. He wasn't at all friendly but hey, he was quite amused and decided to let you live and greeted you. "Well look at that, another one of your Vault dwellers coming out of your little precious bunker! Welcome to the Wasteland, asshole! Enjoy the precious world we live in, while you still draw breath, hah!"

I agree, I get that Bethesda tried to go with the theme of hope, but they completely missed the tone and atmosphere of a Fallout Game. The wasteland is unforgiving and dangerous, in Fallout 4 you get no sense of danger, you immediately get a power armor and casually kill a deathclaw. In the older Games you had to earn your power armor and a deathclaw would rip you apart. Bethesdas Fallout is over the top 50s aesthetic with fun action filled shoot and loot elements.

I definitely feel like with the technology available, with modern consoles and PCs and such, they should definitely be able to make abandoned vaults scary. Imagine a 3d fallout 1 where you went to face the master, and the vault was dark and there were flickering lights, that didn't let you see off into the distance for more than a frame or two. That final hallway before you met the master would be terrifying.

It makes you think of the communities and people that used to thrive here over 200 years ago but were completely wiped away by the bombs, never to be heard of or seen again. The homes, businesses, and everything that once was there was consumed by nuclear fire and it left no trace whatsoever, just an irradiated wasteland as a reminder of the old world's transgressions. The fear and loneliness that that song instills is so powerful. 6:18

I'm ok if they make it absurd and satirical, some of the funny moments in the Bethesda wasteland make it quite entertaining. Especially considering the sheer amount of references crammed into those games. But that only works as long as it remains exaggerated and surreal, the moment they take themselves seriously and make it seem like a fun adventure, I lose it. I hated the moments in New Vegas and 3 that made if feel like it was an easy life, but ultimately felt those games were somewhat balanced. They had their moments of realism, they had their moments of feeling horror. Perhaps not as atmospheric as the earlier fallouts, but nonetheless still existent. Fallout 4 was absurd, there was nothing left of the horror I felt playing these original games, they exchanged it for marketability. Which I do understand, was the problem with these older games. They simply did not make enough money, but I guess I just miss the atmosphere. What I hated most about fallout 4, was that they ruined the dialogue which was my favorite part of the games personally. If they'd stuck with the New Vegas formula, I would have been satisfied. But they took a step back in my opinion, and simply went too far. Ultimately, felt very dissatisfied with the final product. Hope they change things around and do at least one iteration of these games that is loyal to the original vision.

The timeless music of the classic Fallout games is a true testament to a far-gone era of gaming. A time when music could not only compliment gameplay, but do a better job then the graphics at immersing the player, and setting the mood and tone of a place or world. Nothing in any modern video game will ever rival the chills and nostalgia I get when hearing the ambient music of Fallout. The old industrial sounds of a forgotten world, mixed to perfection with the chaos of nuclear sirens. All of which leads to a perfect concoction of what can only be described as sounding like a true poisoned and radiative world. There was simply no need to have ‘Lone Wanderer’ blasting through your pip boy while traveling. Fallouts music and ambience has truly been, and will be unrivalled for a long time to come.

That's fine for Walking Dead, but this is nuclear devastation on a global scale, and the 3d models and creepy music Interplay built was perfect for this entire IP. I hope Obsidian or somebody makes it this exact bare bones terrifying wasteland again. A remaster would be better!

+Non-Photo +Non-Photo I have to agree with you on this. Fallout 4 is a great game and I'm enjoying it for the gunplay and its aesthetic, but it hit me hard on how much it was lacking in story and flavor. One moment that really "worked" for me in new Fallout was when I switched out Dogmeat for Codsworth and he commented astutely on the environment we were in. I thought that was very well done and it drew me in for a split second. I can't speak for Fallout 2 (yet, though I intend on playing it), but that's a huge improvement over Ian, for instance, in Fallout 1, or really any of the companions. Over the course of the many hours that I put into Fallout 1 I developed a running greaser personality that I superimposed onto him (because he wore a leather jacket and had skills with guns and knives) but the devs hadn't really given him a lot of substance for me to work with. Codsworth has some real, bonafide personality that's fun to see. That said, I feel like they've taken a significant step back in terms of dialogue outside of the companion tidbits, and the latter does not make up for the former. You can definitely see that coming over from New Vegas. I will close on this note: My favorite game of all time is Planescape: Torment. When I played it, it hit me that I felt that world was bigger than any "open world" RPG I had ever played, and it has an unbelievably linear storyline and level design. Granted, they had the entire Planescape DnD universe to work with... but I am willing to say the same thing about Fallout 1, as well, which was an entirely new IP. What captivates me is a well-told story within a coherent universe. My imagination can fill in the gaps on having a "big" world as long as I have dialogue and interesting locales that hint at something greater. Ian and other companion dialogue aside, Fallout 1 has hell-of memorable characters. The Master, Lou Tenant, Tandy, Harold, the strangely at-ease guard they posted outside the Brotherhood of Steel headquarters... just to name a few. It's a tight storyline that ultimately comes down to "defeat the mustache twirling villains," and I'm totally okay with that, because there's *so* much flavor. And they managed that when they were basically paving new ground (of course they were building on Wasteland 1, but they functionally founded an entirely new ruleset and IP). Anyway, long post... but that atmosphere I think comes in large part from the music, but also in large part from the dialogue and character.

+Non-Photo Fallout 4 doesn't even give you a choice on who to be. Either way you end up being the good guy. Which sucks. There's no choice in almost anything. Another thing that sucked is that the world isn't even that interactive. They have all of these interesting characters that are cut short in development. Like for instance, Piper is interesting. I want to talk to her; but I can't. Not too much, anyway. It's like they get locked after talking to them. WHY? Also, Fallout 4 almost has no interesting atmosphere. Everything is so...normal...Almost like bombs dropped 500 years ago. Fallout 1 and 2 were sandy, Fallout 3 was brown grey and cold, and New Vegas was red and hot. It's hard to get invested and immersed. No interesting factions, either. By that I mean there's no one to hate or rally against. Because I hate them all. They're all boring. I mean, come the fuck on...I finally get to meet the railroad I've been dying to meet...and it doesn't matter cause I, the player damn near has no say in what happens. I just wish the game had the old "anything goes" feel to choices and actions. Old Fallout had me like: "Phuck, bro. Wat-doo-I-doo." And Fallout 4 is like "Can I just get this over with?" The sketchiest thing I've done in that game by the way, was exploiting someone for caps, and stealing stimpacks from town (no consequence btw.) Also everything we all would have worked so hard for is just *given* to you right away at the start. Also there's no *WOW* to the world. It's just so...uninteresting. I popped out of my vault and first thought was "That's it?" Oh well y'know...Guess I'll wait for the next elder scrolls game. BUT it's still fun. It's got good shooter and gameplay mechanics. Plus, they added a bashy button. So play it. It's really subjective, so I can't speak for no-one on this. I better get to blow up an oil rig or there's gonna be hell to pay.

Fallout 1 and 2 are some of the most important and complex masterpieces of PC games circa late 90's. Mark Morgan's immersive and iconic score captivated our imaginations and emotions over 18 years ago and still does today but with the amplification of enjoyment through nostalgia as well. A nice perk to the already incredible tunes.. memories! What kind of things do you folks think about when you hear this music? For instance, when you hear Metallic Monks, do you think of the BoS Theme to their original 5 story underground base from Fallout 1? Or do you think of someplace in New Vegas? Or perhaps something completely different pertaining to your own life memories? Thank you Interplay, thank you Mark Morgan, and thank you F4m1LyGuy10 for uploading.

Nathan Sheehan Aphex Twin is one of the biggest sources, it seems. The more noticeable offenders include 'Moribund World' which looks to have taken elements straight from Aphex Twin's 'Windowsill,' 'City of the Dead,' which draws from Aphex's 'Tassels,' 'City of Lost Angels' is a slowed down version of their piece called 'Grass,' and 'Desert Wind' from a track titled 'Grey Stripe.' Additionally, their piece 'Matchsticks' looks to be the basis for 'Follower's Credo.' Honestly, even if Morgan hadn't ripped it off, I'd give Aphex a really strong endorsement anyway - they're really great to listen to. Another rather striking example comes from Brain Eno's Alternative 3, which seems to be the basis for 'Vault of the Future' (although I'd argue that I *much* prefer Morgan's interpretation of the piece.) Additionally, Morgan actually uses some guitar work he composed for the miniseries called 'The Stand' for 'Gold Slouch.' If you can find a video of the opening of the series, the guitar bit stands out quite clearly.

They have always been for profit. Otherwise they could never continue their dreams of making more and better games. Business is business. However.. there is no denying that back then they were far more inclined to ENJOY what they were doing and made games that they would want to play themselves. Now most of them follow a formula, churning out as many games as possible and with venues of profit a mass. However, the fact that people WILLINGLY play and pay for Fallout 76 shows to me that a lot of the blame has to be put on the shoulders of us as consumers as well. As a whole we showed ourselves willing to pay for shit like "armor for your horse" in a singleplayer game (Bethesda's Oblivion). I never did. You probably never did either.. but that doesn't matter. We are still part of the group and there's plenty among us still willing to pay for shit value and bragging rights.

When I hit play, it brings me immediately back to the time I had only the demo disk of Fallout 1, at that time getting a game was not easy like today, you almost had to deserve it (and have the money for it). I played Fallout 1 and 2 for years, exploring each pixel of the map expecting the unexpected, trying out all dialogues, shooting my way through the end or just walking around listening to that incredible soundtrack. Brian Fargo resurrected this type of game with Wasteland 2 and 3 and even they didn't beat the original games, I enjoyed playing those games with my young son and I contacted him to thank him for everything he has done. I was actually surprised to get a response, it's only then I realised this guy was for real :)

I really miss this sort of tone in Fallout. Without shitting on the BGS entries too much, I feel like they've steadily deviated from focusing on the horrifying aftermath of destruction of the world after a nuclear conflict to instead play up the 1950s themes and portray the wasteland as another cool setting to explore and rebuild. I think that's fine in moderation, but it's led to such a tonal shift... in Fallout 1 you see the destruction that the nukes wrought and the 50s Americana serves as a sarcastic reminder of the ideologies that led to nuclear war; in Fallout 76 you can FIRE THE NUKES YOURSELF, for no real reason besides explosions being fun, and the 50s kitsch seems more like window dressing than an actual commentary. I still appreciate the BGS games for what they are (except 76), but I like Black Isles' tone way better.

I think it's amazing how the past still has so much for us to discover. I just learned today that the bone-chilling ambient in Fallout 1 intro ("Vats of Goo" by Mark Morgan) was basically an imitation of Brian Eno's track "Alternative 3". I can definitely hear 90's industrial/ambient trademarks when the sirens come in this track (Instinct Ambient compilations to be precise). It is also said that while making the soundtrack he also 'borrowed ideas' from Keiji Haino, Aphex Twin, Depeche Mode and members of Front Line Assembly. Well I don't know about these yet, but the similarities between "Vats of Goo" and "Alternative 3" are UNCANNY. Can't blame him for that though - the result is legendary.

I mean, I liked hearing these tracks in New Vegas, but they just played at random for the most part whereas in the original Fallout games, these tracks were more specific to certain locations. Each place you discovered in Fallout had more of an impact I think because they had their own themes. Still they were right to put the music in New Vegas. The worst thing about the new Fallout games is the battle music that always starts up the moment you start a fight or are detected by an enemy. It's so much cooler to be killing stuff to the regular music. Like the track Desert Wind, I loved hearing that when I got ambushed in the desert in Fallout 1, and just blowing some guy's rib cage out as this minimalist creepy music was playing.

Fallout FNV was my first game as a kid I truly played a lot. I would run around without the radio on most of the time, but occasionally I would turn it off for how it would make the game feel. Without knowing it all came from the 1st and 2nd game. When I found that out I had to go and play the first two games and I love them both.
