I think this is about not blurring the lines of consent for children. Children think very black and white. They will think either I have to hug older family members and ignore how I feel/my comfort about who gets to touch my body…. Or I can say no. Because my body is mine and even an old family member doesn’t have the right to touch me if I don’t want them to. It’s either I have to all the time, or I can say no (for a child’s mind).

Very good point. Id rather a child learn they can trust their feelings, than spend their life questioning their feelings and never feel like they can rely on their own intuition. From experience, i can say Id rather allow them to validate what they feel, especially if they can vocalize why they dont want to give the hug

@@thedrasc1465 exactly! It’s much easier to instill the self trust and sense validation of their feelings in a child, than it is to correct a lack of self trust later on in life. Also trusting their intuition and using their voice protects them. I’ll take people thinking my kid is being rude for their safety

For the girl chat topic on a kids hugging their family members, when I was growing up and even as an adult my mom's side and my dad's side was big huggers. Like Tamera mentioned her family is and in my family they will quickly think your acting strange about any little thing. If you don't eat their food your strange. If you don't hug them your strange. If you don't call them all the time your strange. If you are too quiet your strange. If they don't know ever detail of your life your strange. As a child and adult I always felt to hug my family so they know I still love and cared about them regardless if I was close to them or not. My family is obsessed with knowing everything about you and it can come off as weird vibes. I think you shouldn't make a child be around a family member if they don't want to, but out of respect when they do see the family they should at least say hi or wave, but they don't have to hug or give a kiss.

The point of the Girl Scouts announcement was to teach kids to have autonomy over their body and to learn the importance of consent. Anybody should be able to deny when they want to give a hug or have bodily contact with someone. Sometimes kids want to hug, other times they don’t want to. They should be able to choose if they hug someone or not.

in my family we hung all the time thanksgiving and other family get together.
