------------------------------
SCRAMBLEBURGERS (pg 53)
1lb bulk pork sausage formed into 8 patties
6 eggs
6Tbsp milk or cream
3/4tsp salt
1/8tsp pepper
3Tbsp finely chopped green pepper
3Tbsp finely chopped onion
8 buns, toasted and buttered
Cook sausage patties in skillet for a few minutes on each side until done. Reserve 2Tbsp of sausage fat and use to cook onion and pepper until onion is transparent. Beat eggs, milk, salt, and pepper with a fork and pour mixture over vegetables; scramble. Place sausage patties on bottoms of toasted and butter buns. Top patties with scrambled eggs and cover with remaining bun halves.
TOMATOES STUFFED WITH RICE AND CHEESE (pg 141)
For filling and topping:
2c cooked rice
2oz cheddar cheese
1/3c soft bread crumbs
4Tbsp butter
1/2c canned sliced mushrooms, drained
1tsp Worcestershire sauce
6 large firm tomatoes
3/4tsp salt
1/2tsp Accent
Preheat oven to 375. Butter 8x8x2 baking dish. Melt 2Tbsp butter. Combine breadcrumbs, melted butter, and 2Tbsp of the grated cheddar cheese. Set aside.
Heat remaining butter in skillet, and cook mushrooms until lightly browned. Stir mushrooms remaining cheese, and Worcestershire sauce into rice.
Cut a 1/4" slice from the top of each tomato. With a sharp knife, cut down around inside of tomatoes, about 1/4" from edges, being careful not to cut through bottoms. With a spoon, scoop out center pulp. Sieve pulp and combine with rice mixture. Season inside of each tomato with a mixture of salt and Accent.
Fill tomatoes with rice mixture, heaping slightly. Place in baking dish. Top with buttered bread crumb mixture. Bake at 375 for 15 to 20 minutes.
CURRIED CHICKEN WITH ALMONDS (pg 99)
4 cups cooked chicken cut into thin pieces
1/4lb fresh mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
1/3c butter or margarine
1/4c finely chopped onion
1/4c finely chopped celery
1/2c flour
2tsp curry powder
1 1/2tsp Accent
1tsp salt
2c cream
2c chicken broth
1/2c unblanched sliced almonds, toasted
Melt butter in a pan or chafing dish. Add mushrooms, onion, and celery to pan and cook over medium heat until onion is transparent and mushrooms are browned. Push vegetables to one side of pan and blend flour, curry powder, Accent, and salt into butter. Heat until mixture bubbles, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Gradually add cream and chicken broth to pan. Return to heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Add chicken and cook until the chicken is thoroughly heated through. Sprinkle almonds over top and serve over rice.

Yes! We'll be here when you get back. Just take care of you! I feel your pain - literally. I also tore my labram about 3 years ago and went for surgery to repair it but my ortho saw osteoarthritis in the X-rays and MRI (I was in my late 40s). So we ditched the repair and went straight to total hip replacement since I would likely need that at some point in the future anyway. They remove the labram altogether for hip replacement, so it takes care of both problems and recovery is supposedly much easier than labram repair. Hopefully your doctor looked as well (I am sure he/she did). Either way, I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Haha - I actually came here to post about the chicken curry recipe but got distracted by the hip comments. :-). Thank you so much for posting! I made it today for lunch since I had all the ingredients handy. So good - reminds me of something I had in the Dominican Republic about 20 years ago and was never able to quite recreate. I think because I assumed it was a Caribbean recipe and made with coconut milk, none of the recipes I tried were even close. This the closest recipe I have found! I did add a pinch of both garlic and ginger pastes, mainly because I had those tubes in the fridge already. So delicious.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! My best friend's mother would use Dream Whip to make a delicious root beer float cake. It was IBC root beer, a white cake mix, and Dream Whip. The root beer replaced the water or milk called for in the cake and Dream Whip. After baking and cooling; the cake was chilled in the refrigerator. Then the Dream Whip made with root beer was used to frost the cake. Served cold from the refrigerator it was a delicious summertime treat.

When I had foot surgery I didn’t have the upper body strength for crutches so I rented a knee scooter with a front basket, which gave me my freedom back. Also don’t forget a small shower chair and hand held shower hose. These are things you don’t think about until you need them.

My husband just had a hip replacement on Wednesday. Don’t know the difference in the surgeries, but we were home by dinner. They had him up and walking within a couple of hours. He had to do steps, walk X# of feet and get in and out of a car before they released him. Good luck and have a speedy recovery.

I've heard crazy things about the total hip replacements! That is insane. To compare, I'm about 40, just had several tears repaired in March, and was on crutches and still nerve blocked on the way home (surgery at 8, driving home by 11:30 AM). Pain was not so bad, I was really surprised because I'm the type who eats pain pills like tic tacs when they come my way, lol. I didn't hardly touch my strong painkillers, I simply didn't need them past that first five days. I was on six meds out the door to help healing and pain and inflammation. As for walking and such, it was late week two when I was starting to experiement with putting any weight on my foot, and was trying to go without two crutches week three, and my PT "let" me stop using them week 4, but at home I was hobbling back and forth without it just fine and the PT said that was normal, too. I'm hoping your husband also had a speedy recovery and takes good care of himself to heal it up in the future so he'll never need another procedure! Here's to a pain free life and a mobility filled future!

Way back in the early 70’s, for some reason I couldn’t find fresh cream to whip for my favorite French silk pie so I had to resort to Dream Whip. I was very pleasantly surprised and it was a pantry staple for many years just in case I didn’t have cream. Now that it’s just my husband and me, I don’t bake nearly as much because I am fat enough as it is, but I am comforted that a product that I enjoyed 50 years ago is still available. I have had three hip replacements and the recovery wasn’t bad at all - no, I don’t have three hips but the right one had to be redone four years after the original surgery and two years after the left one. Anyway, I wish you great luck and a swift recovery with your surgery - make sure that man of yours takes good care of you, because you’re a treasure!

@cooking_the_books Hi Anna 😊🍓 Such a cute plate with the strawberries. Dream Whip was a staple at our house when I was growing up. It came on the market the year I was born. 😀 My mom loved cold desserts, pies and cobblers so we used plenty, and probably around late 1960's or around 1970, she added Cool Whip which I think tasted a lot better years ago. These recipes look wonderful! So does that cookbook. It was published 5 years after my parents were married. I'll have to search for it. She probably didn't have a copy, but the recipes sound like things she would make. The little cookbooks look very interesting. I wish you all the best with your hip surgery and recovery. 🙏🏻🌷🌷🌷🤗 Thank you for another great Sunday video!

Having no time to fool around scooping out tomato guts, my preference is to just slice the tomato and pile the filling on top, cover it with cheese, and microwave it. That is actually my preferred method for making a tuna melt, since I am gluten intolerant. But if I've been very careful watching gluten intake for a while, I can transfer the microwaved pile of tomatoes, tuna and onions, dill pickle slices, and melted cheese onto a slice of rye bread, splash it with some hot sauce, and call it a masterpiece!

Growing up we used Dream Whip all the time. Making jello parfaits, on angel cake with berries, on strawberries, mixed with pudding to make mousse. We thought it was special🎉 I used to make baked tomatoes in the 70s bit used the guts chopped fine instead of rice and mixed with Italian breadcrumbs, so it did have herbs😅 . Wishing you a successful surgery and good recovery.❤

So sorry about your hip pain!! I hope the surgery and recovery go super smoothly for you. I loved seeing these late 1950s meals. I especially enjoy a stuffed tomato. Hi Anna! Hope you do well with your recovery! Haven’t had surgery, but I do have the same condition…..on a brighter note…I really enjoyed this video as I enjoy all of them! You bring back a lot of happy memories and particularly the “Dream Whip”! Yes, this was a staple in our family of 10!!!! Our favorite pie my mom made was “Dream Pie”…… 2 envelopes Dream Whip whipped topping Mix 2 3/4 cups cold milk, DIVIDED 1 tsp vanilla 2 packages (4 serving size) Jello instant pudding, any flavor 1 prepared graham cracker crust Beat topping mix with 1 cup milk and vanilla with electric mixer on high speed 6 mins or until topping thickens and form peaks. Add remaining 1 3/4 cups milk and pudding mixes beat on low speed until blended. Beat on high speed 2 mins, scraping bowl occasionally, spoon into graham cracker crust. Refrigerate at least 4 hours. Serve any fruit on side. Hope you will make this on your channel to share with everyone! Your the best Anna❣️take good care 😊

I own a rollator that doubles as a wheelchair. It's so wonderful for getting around when it's needed. I have lent it to family after surgeries including back surgery and it's so nice to have the support to walk and the option to be wheeled when your body is just done.

I was just a half second ahead of you on “tomato guts” or possibly I read your mind. I’m 61 yrs and I remember Dream Whip from my very young days and then Cool Whip frozen toppings from more teen years. All the recipes looked good but I think I will try the Curry dish. Get well soon wishes to you. Be patient with yourself in recovery, surgery of any kind will be exhausting so don’t be disappointed that you don’t have your usual pace. ❤

I live in France and there’s a French stuffed tomato dish, but uses ground beef, spices, the tomato flesh and bread crumbs. It’s called Tomates Farcies, not a light dish. I did make it once, but felt my recipe of it was too much work for the product. You can buy them premade in the grocery store. Wishing you all the best with your upcoming surgery. We will be here whenever you post!

Prayers for a successful surgery and recovery. I have served stuffed tomatoes as a side to steak or ribs, etc. However, the tomatoes are peeled in my preparation. I think they are far superior to stuffed peppers. As for Dream Whip, it's a good product. I haven't used it for a few years, but grew up with it. I remember the flavor being oddly sweet. Have a blessed day 💖✝

Good luck with your surgery. One recipe I remember was from a Jello cookbook. You prepared lime, orange, cherry and raspberry in flat containers and let them set(small packs). I think you use a large pack lemon and let partially set then mix in a of one pack of dream whip prepared into the lemon jello once that is mixed add all of the different jellos to the lemon mixture that set and cut up into squares. This will be put in pan that is lined on the bottom and up the sides with lady fingers(sponge kind). Let it set in fridge until set. I think this was called crown of jewels. It was really good but makes a big pan.

We always used dream whip when I was a teenager. I'm not sure I even tried real whip cream or cool whip until after I moved out on my own. When we made refrigerator cheesecake, it was with dream whip, and canned cherry pie filling on top, I'd also never had a baked cheesecake until high school, I think. I made cream puffs for one of my cooking classes in high school and the filling was dream whip with some frozen raspberries whipped into it, I don't even think they made it to the end of the day as my family just devoured whatever I had brought home from school. Now I rarely ever use dream whip, but I'm thinking I should start buying it just to have on hand for when I get the urge to make something that needs some type of whipped topping as cool whip can get freezer burnt and real whip cream (heavy cream) always ends up going bad in my fridge before I can finish the container.

OMG! That's crazy girl! I JUST had arthroscopic labral repair on left hip in March! I'm just wrapping up physical therapy and am about to embark on a two week trip to Colombia, so wish me luck! I've been working hard to be able to just make it through an airport in a hurry! My advice to you, do NOT overdo things if you think "Oh it doesn't hurt" - I was surprised myself in my experience because I had three anchors put in and serious tears from having deformities in the socket and femoral head (both sides too, so right side is coming next year!) the pain was not so bad, but the days when I got overconfident with PT exercises and would dearly pay for it the next day. So listen to your PT, go to all your sesions, the healing is super important, and this is coming from a similarly shaped fellow lady whose hips have been long suffering (and the injuries kept me from doing the things I loved, so I gained weight and was out of shape). Take good care of yourself! Pamper yourself! Get some silly lego or jewelry making kits or something fun to do with your hands when you are stuck in bed the first couple of weeks. Oh, I got a toilet chair for that first couple of weeks, and had to wear a nightgown with ahem, well I ditched the underwear because those first couple of weeks on crutches and not putting any weight on the affected leg can be brutal when trying to pee! The raised bars on the toilet chair were a godsend, and skipping underwear for that first week made the whole process a lot easier. And my partner was amazing, helping me on and off that first week or so. I hope your partner can help you at home so you heal up with more ease. Ok, I was just surprised to hear your update since I haven't run into ANYone else lately who is having or had a labral repair!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
