That's what many players lack nowadays. I also understand why someone would swap teams for more money, but it's not like 25 million is unliveable, or that someone changes to a better team to win more trophies. I respect these people the most, no matter the sport; football (soccer), basketball, ice hockey. They also tend to be very down-to-earth and humble.

the perfect example that you don't need to be an asshole to be a great and competitive player. think about it, he came as a young, lanky guy from Würzburg who only had played in the 2. league in Germany. then he won every major award in the NBA, revolutionised his position and by doing so, he kept the same goofy, loveable and most importantly humble human being. that's beyond greatness!

Dirk and Tim Duncan are two of the best and classiest players in NBA history. They didn't chase the championship and let their teams build around them. They stayed loyal to one team. Neither of them have a ego and took pay cuts to help improve the team. True legends of the NBA.

Except that is was easier for Duncan to stick with the Spurs because they were constantly put in a position to compete for titles and were successful pretty much right from when he was drafted. Dirk had the harder route and stuck by the Mavs for 13 years before winning a single titles and so his loyalty goes further than Duncan’s or Kobe’s even.

Luka seeing these crowd go crazy for a guy that is loyal to one organization is special. He might stay forever too.

Being a mavs fan I felt the same way about Duncan , TD is a legend and just as humble props to you my guy!

It's a real shame that basketball isn't as popular here in Germany as it is in the USA. Dirk is a perfect role model, that every kid should look up to while growing up. He's never been selfish. He's always been humble and respectful. He's never been involved in any scandals or attracted attention due to miss behaviour. Dirk has always been a true gentleman who had his priorities right and just genuinely loved the sport, his team and the city around it. He never cared about becoming the richest or most famous. He just wanted to play and I think that's why people around the world, no matter which team they cheer for, can easily like, or at least show respect towards Dirk. He truly is one of a kind.

Wow i`m from Germany and i don`t even know the rules of basketball because it`s not that popular here. I'm very impressed how you give him respect and love. Thank you for that!

@@teejaemon Because NBA legends know how good Dirk was. Real respects real. It's so sad kids now only know him from 2015 and after. Before 2014 Dirk played like a legend day in and out, was known as one of the best mid range shooters of all time. created a shot that cannot be blocked from the front. Just look at his career, 31k+ points, 1900+ 3's for a 7 footer, top 10 all time for defensive rebounds, top 6 for points, lead the mavs to like 9 or 10 straight 50 win seasons without much help, was consistent every season, played his heart out, worked harder than guys who naturally were more talented, and in doing so he became better than anyone else and one of the best to pick up a ball. Growing up in Dallas and watching him play has been such an honor. He was one of the few people to change the game of basketball. How many super stars can say they did that? Larry Legend knows Dirk is a legend. How many times this season did he get a standing ovation? Doc Rivers, the Celtics, Madison Square Garden, etc. And that's not even mentioning his loyalty. Stayed with a mediocre team for all 21 years, didn't ring chase, and had the greatest championship run we've seen in so long. #GoatNowitzki

At 9:04 the statement, "... the way you give so much of yourself and ask so little in return...", I remember even though he was in his height as a superstar, he allowed the DAL management to cut his salary just to help in their basketball program and acquired new talents. Unselfishness! Respect! Legend!

I'm a Sixers fan but, but Dirk will always have my respect, one of the best and humble players in the NBA period.

I was 14 when I first time watched dirk. Because I bought a basketball jersey. I had between 3 spreads, billups, garnett and dirk. I got the jersey of dirk. Number 41 and blue, nowitzki on the back I don't even know who he was, I bought that blue shirt because my mother told me that the color was good. that year I watched dirk for the first time in memphis series. great match and he won the match with game winning shot. I told myself who was in this player and started watching every game of him. ı m starting be a dirk's biggest fan since a that years. I bought his posters and still keep them. I would choose dirk while everyone was playing kobe, lebron, iverson. When he lost the 2006 finals, he was eliminated in the first round in 2007 and be a MVP, and when he became the champion in 2011, allstar games, international matches with germany, I watched his all games and supported him. I admired his talent, loyalty, sportsmanship and personality. and now he retired. this is my dirk's story. I will remember her for the rest of my life. Thanks for being my hero.

As a German, you won't believe how much this guy means to our country. Huge underdog story coming to the NBA, beating a Heat featuring Wade, Bosh and James in their prime and being the most humble and down to earth man in sports. I truly admire this guy, he is an inspiration for all the kids out there. You don't need to be cocky to make it. THANK YOU DIRK!

That sucks in my early twenties the cowboys started a Dynasty. You can't beat those year's. But the Dirk year's were definitely special and it helped us take our minds off what Jerry Jones did to the cowboys. But in that same breath Mark Cuban broke up a championship team that did the damn near impossible. Taking out okc Durant Harden and Westbrook. Sweep the Lakers Kobe Gasol taking out the Spurs Duncan Ginobili Parker then finally taken out probably one of the best teams to ever get on the court. Miami with James Bosh and Wade.

We will miss your fade away Dirk Nowitzki..Respect from the PHILIPPINES.

Dirk will forever be a legend in Dallas. Sooo highly respected and loved by Mavs fans. His impact just can't be put into words. I mean just look at how the franchise and fans sent him into retirement. Class act, truly amazing.

Dirk played the game the right way like Pip said. Never complained, never demanded anything and probably could have. Revolutionized the scouting and drafting of European players. Just a brilliant career and one of the best ever. Thank you Dirk 👍🏽

I mean I am the biggest Dirk fan, so the following might be tainted, but I do believe that Dirk did not only sacrifice money to win, he also sacrificed numbers to win. Considering he ended up with the numbers he had, this is a hell of a statement.

When Scottie Pippen says about you that you inspired him, you can truly say that you did something right.

They were the best and I'll miss them forever. As a German kid in the mid 90s there was no team I loved more than the Sonics and all of their great players. I still wish that maybe some day I'll be able to root for them again...

Yeah I miss them too! What Dirk was nowadays was Schrempf back then. He attracted German Kids and Teens to Basketball. If you were a German Fan back then, then either of the Bulls (because Jordan) or the Sonics.

@@vinnyl264 I think there is a fine line between knowing when to be humble, and knowing when to be proud. Dirk is humble 99% of the time, and the 1% of time he's proud is when he truly deserves to be. My favorite player both on and off the court, without a doubt.
