    Thank you for the video, it was very useful. Would you be able to provide the reference for the information about the difference between full can and empty can in terms of the structures it tests? I want to be able to recite this during osteo ospe exams, but as it wasn't taught to us, i would have to provide an academic reference. Many thanks.

    He said that if the patient is positive for empty can test which is the test for rotator cuff muscles but cannot distinguished if the problem is from supraspinatus muscle or no, so you should perform full can test. But at the end of the video, he also said that if the patient is positive for empty can test and negative for full can test, the lesion is not coming from rotator cuff muscles. !!!????

    Yeah, it's thought to be a supraspinatus test, but this position can't isolate the supraspinatus. Could be any muscle of the rotator cuff as all are active during abduction. The test can also score positive for weakness if other muscles are weak, for example the deltoid.

    So what should you do if you are positive on empty can test but negative on full can test?

  • @Physiotutors

    @Physiotutors

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Colin Van Winkle Hi Colin, according to the algorithm of Cools, this could potentially be indicative of an internal impingement (as the empty can is negative) which is affecting the supraspinatus (tendon). But to confirm that you should conduct the other tests that are recommended in our theory video about impingement to really determine what kind of impingement you are dealing with.

    the question was about if the empty can test is POSITIVE and the full can is NEGATIVE. Your answer was to the opposite. Can you please re-read the question carefully? We are wondering what can cause the ECT to be + while the FCT is -. Thank you.

  • @Physiotutors

    @Physiotutors

    7 жыл бұрын

    +deenpac assumption, internal rotation during the ect causes more compression resulting in pain provocation of more subacromial structures while the FCT will primarily assess strength and consequently the integrity of the supraspinatus without putting extra mechanical stress on subacromial structures

    +Khairel Afiq both tests are not very specific, so don't say a lot if they don't fit in with other signs of shoulder pathology. But in general, they are indicative of rotator cuff pathology, probably in the supraspinatus.

  • @Physiotutors

    @Physiotutors

    +Emilia Hara hi! The rotator cuff opposes the deltoids during shoulder elevation. The cuff helps keeping the humeral head positioned in the glenoid. In the video I'm saying that it helps in the performance of a caudal glide of the humeral head.

    It's an older video that follows the suggestions of Cools et al. (2008). Strength can still be normal, but pain provocation can hint at a rotator cuff tendinopathy.
