    My Dad was in the Naval Armed Guard. He made 11 trips to French North Africa, Sicily, Salerno and Naples during `43 AND `44. Probably knew Casablanca better than Bogie ever did...My older brother recently spent years obtaining the ships logs, for every day and location of his service. One of the coolest entries was when they were in an Italian Port and the gun crews had to stay up all night with lanterns and M-1`s to thwart an expected attack by Italian Frog men...

    Excellent job, nice detailing. During 1942-1945 there were several and some times successful attacks at Gibraltar harbour. The Italian tenth Submarine Flotilla and the Italian Submarine Sciré, commanded by Junio Valerio Borghese, also took part in the various operations. Italian frogmen set up a base in the Italian cargo ship Olterra which was berthed in Algeciras on the opposite side of the bay of Gibraltar. The frogmen and there chariots as these Maiale where also known used to exit the Oltera via an underwater hatch in the bows of the ship. As the Spanish authorities at the time did not approve of such operations. These Italian frogmen would then attach Limpet mines to the underwater hulls of ships ,move away and BOOM sink ships. Buster Crabb was at Gibraltar doing under water inspections of ships and removing the Limpet mines as and when they located them. Brave guys on both sides. A similar operation was being entertained in 1982 during the Falkland's war . Argentinean frog men wanted to sink ships in the harbour entrances to deny the Royal navy from using Gibraltar as a Naval Base. No action was ever carried out.

    my grandpa told me they had to cycle to propel the Maiale and they didn't have mask nor air tanks, they just had to hold their breath for a few minutes. Maybe it's because is 100 years old but that sounds way more badass

    There is a good DVD movie made about these chariots . It's called "The Silent Enemy" , it's the true story of a man in the Royal Navy by the name of Lieutenant Crabbe . Lt . Crabbe commanded an under water unit of British frog men to rid the Royal Navy dock yards of Italian underwater Chariots during WW11 . The DVD is available from Amazon Canada .

    Tip of torpedo detaches. And is then secured to boats hull on a timer and they would drive the torpedo away. In reality this would often result in a suicide mission though

  • @Penfold8
    @Penfold82 жыл бұрын

    Was this a suicide mission type thing or would they bail when launching it at a target?

  • @mariorossi6832

    @mariorossi6832

    Once they sneaked up under an enemy ship, they dismounted the charge, secured it under the hull, set the timer and swam as fast as they could out to where an Italian submarine would be waiting to pick them up. However on certain occasions they did turn into suicide attack, for example when Teseo Tesei intentionally blew himself up in an effort to open a path for his comrades to penetrate inside Malta's harbour....

    Yes, Italian Navy used these very sucessfully during World war 2. But this was just a torpedo shaped transport vehicle, not a real torpedo. Operators carried explosives which they attached to the target ships hull. Italy used these special forces in both world wars, probably the biggest succes was to sink the Viribus Unitis in WW1, then in WW2 heavily damaging 2 British battleship in Alexandria.
