    Combined with the X-H1 this lens is spectacular. The IBIS and size of the X-H1 makes this combo amazing. The images from the X-H1/16-55 2.8 is spectacular with fantastic color fidelity. The balance is perfect and IBIS is remarkably effective. I think that’s probably easier to stabilize a smaller sensor with lesser resolution. As far as manual focus - did you know that you can choose between liner response and non linear response. With this setup you can get a near perfect experience. The linear option makes it work just like a fully manual lens. I don’t think this option is available on any other mirrorless. Have you tried this in your X-T3?

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

    @DustinAbbottTWI

    I have tried changing between linear and non-linear, but neither option is what I would define "near perfect". It's a long way from a Zeiss lens.

    Fujifilm has said "To maximize it's optical performance we decided to remove OIS. It was not an easy decision" I came from using the Canon 24-70 2.8 II and primes so i didn't even want any stabilization and 15 years of shooting weddings in low light i'm comfortable at 1/60 and sometimes 1/30 speeds without stabilization. But like you said it goes great with the XT4.

    Does ibis play well with this lens when using on an xt-4? Ibis is great on the 18-55 kit, but on wider angle not so much (warpy corners) so I'm curious how well it works with this lens.

    Corner confusion tends to start at 12mm with X-T4. Even the Samyang 12mm F2 doesn't warp much as long as you tell the camera what the focal length is in the menu, as that lens is manual without electronic coupling.

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

    It would have been an auto ISO adjustment. The white froth of the water would change the EV value compared to the broader scene.

  • @Saltiola7
    @Saltiola74 жыл бұрын

    At 4:04 when you zoom in there is noticable steps in exposure. This also happens with the kit lens 18-55 with the aperture set to f4. The question is what are your settings there? I mean I want to avoid these exposure steps - are you using auto ISO? If it doesnt have the steps with all manual settings it would be great..

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

    @DustinAbbottTWI

    4 жыл бұрын

    I was not using auto iso. ISO was fixed, and the aperture in this lens doesn't change, so the only way to avoid that further would be to shoot completely in manual so the camera doesn't adjust anything.

In the canon arena I have the big and nice 70-200 mk2 the 35L II and 85L is all your recommendation. In Fuji I went to another root... i have bought the 16mm 1.4 the 56mm 1.2 and 80mm f2.8 macro. You have to see for yourself the magnificent lens that they are. If you can, start to review Fuji Primes, they are the best thing in Fuji line-up. But man. I miss that 35L mk2. Maybe the 33mm f1 next year will have the same magic!

    How is the IQ in comparison of the 18-55 2.8-4 kit? I'm sure it's better but I know the 18-55 is one of the best kit lenses ever and want to know if it is worth selling the 18-55 for this one? I want it mostly for landscapes so OIS and max aperture isn't really all that important to me as it's usually on a tripod. I just want to know if it's optically sharper and if so, is it worth investing in?

    Either a lens with very good/quiet autofocus, or a manual focus lens that you prefocus. You just don't want your video to be spoiled by little focus changes all the time. I'd probably go manual focus, which gives you a lot of inexpensive options. You need to think about how wide you want the framing and make your choice based on that.

An 18-55, or in this case 16-55, is SUCH a versatile walk-around range, especially when made with superior optics and an f/2.8 aperture -and if Canon did it, IS.

I have one on lay way that I would like to find useful for fast moving situations where I don’t have to have three primes rotating. For more controlled situations I will however use my primes. Using it on my XH1 with IBIS I look forward to shooting video footage of my son and his friends doing tricks on their BMX bikes and shooting creative Fondo cycling action in the summer months.

    Great review. I appreciate the honesty about the shortcomings of the 16-55mm (especially mentioning corner sharpness). I however, recently purchased a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 DC DN. The Sigma is very nice. It is sharp and light but I have found myself missing that 16mm on the wide end. I am currently considering the Fuji 16-55 but Sigma has the 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN new for $599.00 with good reviews... For about 1/2 the price of the 16-55mm I now find myself edging towards the 2 Sigmas. My "holy trinity" of Fuji zooms may look like: Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN FUJIFILM XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR My use case scenario is for street/landscape and some portraiture. I shoot with an X-T3 and X-H1 as a backup / everyday system (I am primarily a Nikon FX "Z" shooter and I use that system professionally). I also have the X-Mount 30mm and 56mm f/1.4 Sigmas and a 12mm AF f/2.0 Samyang. (I won't need the Samyang anymore if I acquire the Sigma 10-18mm.) IMHO, the weight savings alone with the 2 Sigmas seems to be worth it not to mention their acuity and price-point over Fuji's offerings. I suspect that Fuji may be a little overdue for a 2nd version in their zoom lineup...

    Great, super thorough and even-handed review as always. Always thrilled to see you get a hold of a lens I own or want to own. All winter long I've been climbing mountains in the Adirondacks with this lens so those snow-draped pine shots in your gallery are familiar. I've been happy with the results. As warm weather approaches, I will be more inclined to bring my tripod along for long-exposure shots of water. What tripod did you use with the 16-55? Coming from the A6000 + Sigma 16 + Sony 18-135, I've found there to be more "pop" in the images produced by the 16-55 than my old tandem. I always hear the mythical term "microcontrast" bandied about on the internet. Maybe this is it? Or is it something as mundane as the Velvia film simulation? Or does it have to do with the XT-3 being bereft of an AA filter?

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

    No, I think this lens does have pretty good microcontrast (even better if you use it with a CP-L). As for tripod - when travelling I use a lightweight Oben CT-3535 carbon fiber tripod. I reviewed it years ago here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYOkz6qKld27mpc.html. Closer to home I use full size carbon fiber sticks.

    Except for the last goof I actually thought a lot the intermediate movements were tracked better by the Fujifilm. I’ll have to check it again. What’s more annoying to me is the abrupt stepped auto exposure shifts. I wish the would build a focal reducer and some APO manual FF lenses maybe on a proprietary M42 like mount with electrical contacts just to really start eliminating the focal length/DOF issues that come with constantly having one angle of view with a different DOF then a FF lens.

    The stepped focus shifts are annoying, though that can be avoided by just setting everything up manually. I disagree on the intermediate movements. Fuji's C-AF in video tends to step rather than glide smoothly, while Sony (and Canon) do smoother transitions.

But has nothing to do with equivalence. A 50mp full frame sensor has worse high iso than a 10mp aps-c sized sensor with the same technology for example..
