Dear Ghosts,
So this video took a lot longer than I expected particularly because I was a bit more ambitious with the music since it was going to be a long and winded review. Color grading could have been better but there’s so much content in this one so this is the best I could do before July 14th (Happy Birthday to Chili and the XH2S!). Rewatching the review, I think I’m a little bit harsh, maybe nitpicking a bit more than I need to because I feel obvious specs and conditions have been talked through in other reviews. I will say I spend a lot of time knocking down the cinematic aspects of the image. To be honest, this image with flog2 is surprisingly similar to Arri Log C, so with 14bit color along with the dynamic range, it is truly excellent. But when I refer to that missing cinematic look, what I’m referring to is the organic detail. The round, 3 dimensionality of an object feels flat like a photo. I can bring some of it back with the Zeiss Otus lenses 3d pop, but it still feels flat at times. Conversely it’s really great for macro esp being apsc. I shot some macro with the xt3, dynamic range suffered just barely but there’s less noise. In some circumstances, just use flog so you get less noise.
So a topic which I deleted from the video out of brevity is “Why Fujifilm?” The experience of shooting fujifilm is the most fun you can have: Pick up and shoot, and take amazing jpegs straight out of camera with no editing. It’s a great camera but an even better product. But that’s where things kinda changed with the xh2s. If I were to recommend another camera I might recommend the xs20, Lumix S5ii, or Blackmagic.
Summary:
I like this camera a lot, and it’s pretty sick that you have internal ProRes with an amazing flog2 and great photos. But that brings me to the dealbreakers with this camera. Ignore everything else: 1250 base ISO is too high, flog2 noise is suffocating at times (and its pretty much unusable at high frame rates) and DAVINCI RESOLVE STILL CANNOT COLOR SPACE TRANSFORM FLOG2 SO FUJIFILM AND BLACKMAGIC SETTLE YOUR DIFFERENCES AND WORK TOGETHER TO GIVE US OUR 1 YEAR OVERDUE SAUSAGE
Spend wisely.
Love,
CleverG

Thanks for sharing your (critical) thoughts. I use the X-H2s (rigged up) now since a year. And getting to know it better (with all plus and minuses) pushed my production value shooting with it. Indeed a true "Cine X One" one day in the near future would be amazing . I keep fingers crossed. But first of all: Can we say all together: " How great is you Dune-like footage" in the beginning of this video ! Wow !!!!!

Its just that the xt3 is too good of a camera and an upgrade will only be for quality of life things like film simulations, ibis, flip screen, battery which do make a difference but in terms of image quality, you can’t really tell the difference when I used an xt3 for the macroshots of this camera versus the usual. That being said I’ve seen this camera for 1700$ and that is a great price for an upgrade

Great video. I really like that you recently started commenting instead of only shooting. About FLOG2, you can use DCTLs to convert to Aces or DWG, look for "Tatcher Freeman DCTL Tutorial Episode 3", he made a conversion DCTL for free. Also, I've been using Kase Clip In ND16 filter for Xmount, it's internal and helps to tame the 1250iso with 4stops, also gives a subtle softness to the image. But i must say, you're right about this camera being poor value. If it was priced between 1500-2000, would be awesome but at 2500, it kinda missed the point, specifically compared to current Lumix options.

This is really dependent on what you're looking for and i know nothing about your needs. For video, Sigma FP is better for intermediate and advanced shooters, the Fujifilm is better for novices especially because of the autofocus and wider dynamic range. For photography the fujifilm is more reliable and has a more enjoyable experience, the Sigma fp has a higher skill ceiling and reward suitable for professional work involving photo editing. I think Sigma has a better image overall but Fujifilm is more fun and easier to use. Id recommend Fuji if you are just starting out, but try and get it used for 1700$. xs20 is a much better deal than the xh2s.

Hi I wanted to ask you about this. Xh2s seems to be able to record 14 bit flog2 while Lumix can record only 10 bit. How can they be equal?(I am leaning towards lumix, asking this question to make me more grounded)

  • @cleverghostchili

    @cleverghostchili

    10 ай бұрын

According to Fujifilm the xh2s records at 10bit, but only processes the information at 14bit. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqKe2pmKeKSyebQ.htmlsi=1SEhCSIicj2qJ7Hx (10:15). I think the Lumix is better for video, softer image, ibis, more video tools, many consider full frame a plus but that depends person to person. Fujifilm has ProRes 4:2:2, extremely good rolling shutter, color and photos are also better imo, but has a plethora of problems outlined in this video. Now that the price of the xh2s and s5ii can be found less than 2000usd I think they are both amazing buys. On paper the xh2s looks incredible but if you don’t mind the sharpness and love film simulations it is a great choice. If you really need ibis and video tools I’d go for Lumix. Can’t go wrong with either. Spend wisely. Also don’t forget about the mount.

I've been enjoying Fujifilm for abotu 6 years now, currently doing professional work on a T3 and T2 as backup. However it seems Fuji keeps on bringing out a great feature, only to abandon it with the next model. Also, for the money I think Panasonic is a better value for deal (given it offers cine video tools built in), apart from the H2s offering way better rolling shutter performance or the need for shooting 40 fps in stills.

There's two things that really seem to hinder this camera's beautiful image. The overly sharpened image (definitely needs an OLPF) and the flog2 seems to severely compress the highlights. When we look at the images you shot though it doesn't seem to suffer from those issues especially the highlight compression. This camera is in serious need of RAW

I really adore this cameras color science. I want to film with it more and flog2 is finally transformable in Davinci this summer. For me I’m still not fond of the texture and 3d rendering, the images fall on a 2d plane for me. But I do like the highlights of the camera so this summer I’ll revisit with some colorgrading improves I’ve picked up on. I also tried more of your method for my most recent video, shines in certain places

  • @shueibdahir

@@cleverghostchili Yeah the highlight compression issue might be the LUT more than the Log curve itself but i'm not sure. I love davincis transforms since they are mathematically accurate. Yeah I watched your recent video and immediately noticed it. It might work more often if you take the Midgray shifting into mind. Mine always has 3 stops above midgray and 8 below so it's quite easy to predict.

Your points are very conflicting, especially with your value point. I would argue as well that this is a upgrade from a black magic due to flexibility. It may have one less point for video, yet the rolling shutter and photo abilities carry it farther. I would say the main Benefits for a black magic camera or any cinema cam is the video tools and inputs. Image wise, it’s on par if not better depending on the skill of the user.

  • @cleverghostchili

Value with respect to upgrading from a fuji camera as image quality is the same. I recommend this camera for someone completely switching to fujifilm. I think the dynamic range is likely better on the xh2s, but i disagree that the image on the xh2s is on par with blackmagic for filmmaking. It’s a good value compared to canon and Sony, but against Panasonic and fujifilm? You can buy two fujifilm xs20 for the price of an xh2s and I already see many people selling their xh2s. It’s a good camera no doubt, but so is the xt3. I get basically the same performance minus the dynamic range and rolling shutter as you said

After nearly 2 years they did finally add flog2 support in Davinci 19. Ever recent Fuji release is essentially the same camera rehoused, the image quality and texture is identical to previous cameras so you are paying 1000 more for a stacked sensor just for better rolling shutter. I still maintain the xs20 is the better purchase.

  • @cleverghostchili

Perhaps I didn’t articulate my points well, I love this camera and fujifilm. As an upgrade from the xt3, my blabbering is mainly that don’t find that the camera is worth the price of two new xs-20 when you can get nearly identical photo quality from the xt3 and get a more substantial cinema camera for 2500$. The most substantial gripe I’m having difficulty coming to terms with is the fact that it’s been a year and Davinci resolve doesn’t support the flog2 profile, I don’t know internal workings between Fuji and blackmagic, but I still consider this quite unacceptable given that a photo camera like Leica can have their log profile supported before fujifilm. Other small gripes like a poorer build quality are very disappointing for their flagship model. You also don’t need to take my word for it, don’t let my critique ruin the camera for you

Yes! That’s my main workflow I even made a video on it. It still leans a little green while some reds become a little over saturated, just small adjustments. There is also another ACES work around, but the principle is whether we should have to make workarounds for their premium video camera in the first place. For me I don’t mind using Arri log C at all, but it still feels like Fujifilm doesn’t care about video users. Also I don’t like how the prices go up and the quality goes down. Hey mate, been loving the content. I know we like to all fawn over our gear, but at the end of the day it comes down to the best tool for the job. After a year of using the XH2-S, I've been able to dial in the image and it can produce fantastic imagery. With that said, I've looked into why the image has a very sharp and sometimes extreme digital edge to it. I've read up on it and saw a few videos where it points to extreme chroma smoothing and NR in the processing pipeline that cannot be turned off is the culprit more than the high resolution alone. The image can be finessed a bit, but I still desire a softer more organic image. If Fuji fixed the processing, it would really put it up there with the greats. I've been pondering the FP after I saw your video on it and I would sacrifice DR, IBIS, useable AF and a flippy screen for the organic beautiful image it produces. I've learnt that great specs don't always paint a full picture.

There’s a way to set it with the Q menu and command dial but that’s like 4 button presses and covers even more of the screen. I always found Sony to have too much base saturation but all cameras are good if you know how to use it, even xh2s I need some workarounds.
