Fujifilm XF 23mm F2 | 2022 Review - The Lens That Can Do It All?

Фильм және анимация

The 2022 review of the Fujifilm XF 23mm F2 where we dive into what this lens has to offer. It excels in many areas that you would expect of a modern lens with high versatility with some limitations, which if you make sure to understand first, could help the application to your photography immensely.
What type of photography is the 23mm focal length good for? With the maximum aperture of F2, how is the bokeh and sharpness? How does it fair on the XF lineup? We will find out in just a moment!
All images contained in this video were all taken by the XF 23mm F2, which I've owned for over 4 years now.
I moved over to the Fujifilm X system back In 2018 and have never looked back, this is a first lens review video in the making with many more to come.

Curious about 35mm/f2 and 50mm/f2. Talking about the current video, 23mm is a great and sharp lens. I agree on all your points. However, I prefer to use 27mm/2.8 for the street with xt30 body. When we talk about zoom lenses, I use them with t4.

@@TimothyYip I am into new perspectives and I will be waiting for that video on 35mm/f2. 27mm/mk I is a sharp lens. You get the right amount of subjects in the frame. Personal point of view, 23mm sometimes gives too much information into the frame. I would get it for doc photography (protests for ex.). However, I believe that this 23mm lens must be updated and we can confirm that looking the one on x100v. Smaller, sharper, faster. Back to 27mm, there is a new one. So, wait for it and you could rent them both for a comparison video. All in all, having 27mm on xt30 body, you will have the new e4 without the weaknesses. I wish you a good luck on this YT journey. Keeping YT with fresh views and creativity is the only way to keep YT meaningful. Be well, Timothy!

Love this lens. Regarding the hood and cap, one trick that I do is when transporting the lens capped, I remove the hood then install the cap directly on the lens, and then reinstall the hood. This prevents accidental loss of the cap since the squeeze tabs are now protected by the hood. If you install the cap to the hood directly, you will eventually hit one of the squeeze tabs and possibly loose the cap.

I love the X100V, mainly for its size, but I've always felt the images from the 23mm F2 and XT2 were better - sharper and just better - hard to explain. The XF23mm f2 is actually a bit wider than 35mm equivalent. It's more like 31-32mm. This creates a little more wide angle distortion, making for more interesting images IMO.

You’re the only other person I know that likes the lens hood. I like it a lot too. I wish it wasn’t plastic but the design doesn’t bother me. The shot at 3:28 is gorgeous, at this distance does f2 resolve ok now? Is it only towards the minimum focus distance that the f2 struggles? I'm still researching my 23mm options for Fuji. I really wish a f1.2 AF option existed. To me the jump between f2 to 1.4 is not that much, hard to justify the price leap also. But a jump from f2 to 1.2 is really significant now, how I wish Fuji pushed a little more on their newest 23mm to being 1.2, I'd gladly take soft corners and a little more weight for that option.

  • @TimothyYip

    @TimothyYip

    Жыл бұрын

Hey Eddy! Thank you! For those shots around the marker you’re referring to, none of them has softness issue, in fact they were fairly sharp. All those shots were taken at least 3-6ft (1-2m) away from the subject. It only really struggles at the MFD at wide opened. Once stopped down to f2.8 ish + the obvious softness disappears. I have the new 23mm f1.4 and am in love with it. It is definitely way bigger than the f2 but everything about it just feels so good! 1.2 would be nice but I think the sacrifice on weight and price will be too great to be worth it, at least in my opinion. Plus the 1/3 stop difference from 1.2 and 1.4 is too minor for the added attributes mentioned above. There’s always the 50mm f1 if you’re want the fastest lens avail :) Thanks for watching the vid and I hope you’ll find the answer to your needs! 👊🏽

  • @TimothyYip

I don’t think it’s necessary to stop it down that low unless you’re shootings at minimum focus distance, if you are then f3.2-f4 gets the sharpness needed, otherwise I have no issues shooting wide opened.

Nice! I hear great things about the 16-80mm! What do you mostly shoot? The 35mmf2 has a lot of similar quality to the 23mmf2, I would say the 35mm is even better when it comes to the IQ since it’s sharp all round and it doesn’t suffer to the same softness issue. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏽

@@TimothyYip I shoot everything: landscapes, streets, family & individual portraits. I bought a zoom precisely because I have to shoot different subjects and I cannot constantly change the lenses.

So undecided between 23f2 or 16-80f4 (I used to have the 23 1.4 and I loved it)

When I hear "It's built like a tank" my life gets shorter 3 months. 😃 Really, we do not know how things are made by looking at the outside and feeling the weight. 🙂 Thanks for the video! Beautiful photos you have! 👍👌

@@TimothyYip trade you for a philippines copy. Jk. But I'm actually curious of any image quality differences.

Haha I doubt there’s any quality difference based on where it was produced. Process would be the same.

Apart from its poor close focusing performance wide open. The lens is fantastic from 1 meter or beyond at all aperture.
