Question: When you mount a dedicated manual focus lens to the Zf, can you control the aperture (in either Aperture Priority or Manual modes) via the aperture ring on the lens and retain full aperture metering? Or do you still have to futz about with the dials on the body to control the aperture?

@@FramesTM I see no reason why this wouldn't work. The nice little aperture screen on top will not show your aperture since there is no electronic connection with the lens to send that information. The rest should work fine, when you stop the aperture down on the lens, the sensor receives less light and will thus compensate for this by increasing the exposure time and/or ISO.

If I want practical and fun experience and going to shoot manual lenses in mind like Laowa 15mm macro, TTArtisan 50mm Tilt and TTArtisan 100mm 2X Macro, would you suggest me to get Sony A7RV for the 4 ways screen which can be use for videos sometime or Nikon ZF for the full manual dials experiences? Which one has the easiest reliable set it once and forget profiles setting for each lens that I can switch to easily to produce similar SOOC real life color across all lenses? I shoot video mainly with Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder but when I do specialised videos I will use the camera as well. My favorite color is yellow he ce I do love the Panasonic and Nikon menu theme and also the Nikon logo and theme throughout their products and design, wish their lens has yellow manual focus labels like the 0.95 lens tho! Is these classic dedicated dials really fun or just marketing and just different experience from the typical PASM like when you travel to different place to have some fresh experience, which mean th fun for classic shooter might become PASM camera? Zf do have both world tho and seem like it's easy to switch to auto mode when you need to by turn it all the way to the back I hope there will be a true rangefinder full frame hybrid camera with EVF when you need it plus come with the A7RV 4 ways screen because I like the FPS experience of the rangefinder where you can see your lens and matching the image to focus!

Great video, Frames! One of the best comparisons I have seen in a while. I've been extremely busy to go and pick up mine from the shop, but at least I know it's there and I won't have to worry about supply shortages. I also have a Z fc and a X-T4. However, I have much more Nikon glass to go with the Z fc, so I end up using it most often. I suspect the Z f will become my new daily shooter.

I'm a serious hobbyist who's been shooting with Nikon since 1980 with the FE, which I still own. I currently have the D500, which has served me well, however earlier this year I bought the Fuji x100v as a travel camera for a trip to Italy. I really love the camera however it was quite an adjustment from the Nikon system. I now want to upgrade to mirrorless for a second camera and am quite conflicted as to which of the 2 to purchase. I have to say from the "emotional" perspective, unlike what you said in your review, the Nikon makes more sense for me, however I'm still not at a point to be able to decide on either.

It was mirrorless, looked cool, was fun to shoot, and Fuji had a passionate community that shared their knowledge and film recipes. But I also immediately missed the dynamic range and image quality that I got from my Nikon. Some of my favorite images I’ve ever taken were with my x-t2 and x-t3, but last year I split my system and got a z6. I've seen a few videos where folks have raved about the Fujifilm ecosystem and wondered if that would restore some joy back to picture making for me. However, this video has confused me more lol. I hear a strong bias towards Nikon Zf and that makes sense to me too given that I would be more spec inclined over just buying a camera for hobbyist reasons. Thanks for comparing them and this has given me more to think about in terms of where my purchase goes.

Just in time as I was contemplating the XT5 vs the ZF. I have the XT5 but I'm primarily a Nikon shooter. I use the XT5 for street and travel and I pair it with the 23 1.2 Voigtlander or 18-50 Sigma 2.8. The ZF no doubt is superior in lowlight and AF tracking , but the flip out screen and lack of joystick keep me from ordering it . I enjoy using the two way hinge screen of the XT5 . The XT5 is a photography first camera while the ZF is a more all around camera. I’m resisting the ZF and will hold out for the Z6III to pair with my Z7. I also have a Nikon D810 which is still a pleasure to use when I feel like old school ( the first camera I made money with when I shot for money). Thank you , Frames . I enjoy your videos very much . Did you update your fuji before this test because fuji updated the af speed & accuracy/tracking by alot in that update. Every point is perfectly chosen & i agree wholeheartedly. But I think the xt5 is far worse build quality compared to zf. Another thing viltrox 1.2 lenses turn fuji into a pro ff camera. They are epitome of value & quality if you have those then there is little to no difference between ff vs apsc. Ofc apart from those 1.2 on ff but then they will be even bigger than fuji setup.

I like your take on comparing these two cameras. You are spot on. I own three Nikon Z cameras and several full frame lenses. I use this system mostly for low light shooting. I purchased the aps-c Nikon zfc and the Z50 with several lenses a while back, but I became disappointed with Nikon's lackluster aps-c mirrorless system. You are correct that Nikon is basically for professionals (I am a part-time professional). I traded in my Nikon aps-c cameras and lenses for a Fuji X-T5 and a couple of lenses for everyday use and for travel. The Fuji X-T5 is more fun to shoot, and I shoot mostly jpegs with it. I love the film simulations and the layout of the X-T5. I use my Nikon mostly for professional use with RAWs and jpegs. I would advise Nikon full frame shooters not to spend their hard earned money on Nikon aps-c cameras and lenses. Fuji has a well established aps-c lineup of lenses and is attracting more third party lenses from Tamron, Sigma, and Viltrox. I thought after purchasing my XT-5 that I might want to look into Fuji's XH lineup for low light shooting, but I decided to purchase the Zf to supplement my Z8 and Z9. I have no doubt that the Zf has at least one stop higher iso capability than either the Z9 or Z8, which start to breakup a bit after iso 3200. I am glad to have watched your video and now my decision is much clearer now.

Have been waiting for a comparison between Xt5 and Zf. Have always enjoyed experience of Fuji especially with the screen on Xt2 & Xt5 for landscape, but for low light I use Nikon. My Z50 struggles a bit in low light which is one reason the Zf appeals, plus better processor & tech. The new styling in full frame is very appealing. Cons are the flippy screen and the grip, can’t wait till I have saved enough to go Zf. Thanks forvthis comparison, 👏

You bring out some good points, but the difference between the Fuji APSC and Nikon FF is greater than you think. After sticking with Fuji APSC for over a decade, I recently sold all that gear and swapped over to Nikon Z. It was the best thing I ever did for my business. My customers noted the difference in image quality and I had many comments regarding how my images looked so much better. If you don't nail the exposure with the Fuji - even in base ISO - and try to pull up shadows, the image will turn to custard (try doing this at ISO 6,400 with the Fuji, but with Nikon I can). Fuji seems OK for amateurs, but not for professional photographers. I could go on, but I love my two Z6ii's so much and I now have 6 of their Z lenses. Nikon absolutely killed the Zf with the silly screen. If you are 100 percent stills photographer like me, you do not want a stupid screen like that. Just as well my Z6ii's are so good, I do not need to update.

I'm an X-T5 hobby street photographer. I'm often envious of full frame capability in low light. But, at the end of the day, I can run my X-T5 with a terrific daytime lens for notably less carrying weight in my hand than the Nikon XF. I also don't want the Nikon's flippy-screen when I'm in busy city crowds etc, in case it gets knocked, etc. Those simple differences are important for me, as I often walk for 10 miles with a camera in my hand. Otherwise, yeah the capabilities of the Nikon would easily tempt me.

Hello again, I purchased the Nikon Zf and here is my VERY SUBJECTIVE personal experience. 1. The Zf is no doubt it's a low light monster and a very good all-arounder for this stills only photographer. I still might keep it JUST because it's the only full frame camera in my collection. I sold off my D750 and have missed FF since. 2. I love using the F-Z adapter and having so many lens options! 3. It's a gorgeous piece of work! However, I will be in the minority I'm sure because could not get around these things on the Zf: 1. The feel of the camera is premium but not as comfortable for my small hands as the X-T5/X-H2S. Then again, I love small cameras. 2. I could not get around the autofocus system options versus the X-H2S. I was schooled on Nikon 35mm cameras and DSLRs when we really didn't have the plethora of AF choices. Now trying to adapt to Nikon's AF feels like an extra step for my brain. I set the drive mode on my Fujifilm camera with the flick of a button and have a custom button to switch to AF-C plus subject detection and I never have to worry about 3D versus Wide, versus small, etc. The one autofocus does it all for what I need. 3. The d-pad is heavy and not as fun to use as a joystick. 4. The whole ISO button issue is workable but not convenient. 5. I have way more custom button options on my Fuji cameras. 6. The out of camera JPGs are lovely but in reality the RAW images seem ever so slightly clinical to me. I miss my Fuji colors! At the end of the day, what you said about Fuji being an emotional experience is so true. Ever since I got a hold of the X-T20 back in 2018, I have been so driven to shoot. No other brand has done that for me except maybe Ricoh GR point and shoots. I think if you are a street photographer and grew up with Fujifilm, the Zf will be either a LOVE it camera or it will be one that feels too awkward of a transition and for me, it's the latter.

@@FramesTM Thank you. I agree with you that it's not at all about the Zf being a "Fuji Killer" and that both can run in parallel with different approaches and purposes. I am a street photographer who does NOT use Fujifilm recipes and only shoots RAW. Being nimble on the streets is my primary priority. However, I desire that full frame look and IQ is extremely important as well. Then there's weight - bird and wildlife require speed and proper autofocus and I also need to keep weight down. So, yes - as you say, it's a conundrum! Also, I really wish that Nikon had a full lineup of lenses with a working depth of field scale. Shooting street photography with the Nikon Zf would then be an experience. I have another 30 days to decide so I look forward to your next video! Perhaps whatever you post might help me find more to love about the Zf! As an aside, what cards are you using? I get errors writing to the card on the Zf. It's a SanDisk UHS-II class 3, 280mbps. I'm waiting for another card to come because the others are not ideal.

I have been a Canon shooter for 30 plus years and just ventured into Fuji and for the following reasons, insane lens prices for new L lenses, lack of attention to customer opinions, crippling of features unnecessarily (Nikon is an exception to this), lighter weight and superb quality. There isn't a "bad" lens in the entire line up with Fuji, while you can't say the same about the "big" 3. Fuji listens, provides a lot of user friendliness and value. Don't compare an 85 mm f 1.8 to a 33-f.14 and pixel peep for what is in focus. You should try a 56 f1.2 latest edition with latest firmware and then comment. Maybe use a 50 1.4 on the Nikon too. A telephoto lens will always be more accurate as the image is magnified which helps autofocus accuracy. When I heard that Fuji doesn't have touch autofocus, I gave up watching any further. The Zf is priced $300 more in the US for the body and the lenses will all be more expensive too. Plus the camera is heavier and larger which may not provide for a better experience, if carrying it around all day or packing it for travel. Plus Nikon seem to have recalls on new cameras like the Z8 which doesn't inspire confidence, and I hate someone handling my new camera for repairs when they really ought to send you a new fixed one.

And the 33 1.4 is one of Fuji’s faster lenses (forget the 56 1.2. That’s SLOW). > Notice that she kept walking forward and so even if I take the shots where she’s same size in the frame, Fuji still loses. > Fuji lenses, right from 35mm equivalent to 85 equivalent, are much more expensive than the Z lenses. (In my market) > Lastly, the cheapest plastic bayonet lenses ok Nikon are faster than most Fuji lenses. > You’re probably new to Fuji. I used Viltrox lenses for years just to get my Xt3 focus consistently in video. Xt5 is faster than Z6II. But slower than the new gen Nikons. End of story.

I still don't understand why Fuji's AF still can't catch up with others. Canon and Nikon cames to the Mirrorless game much later than Fuji yet the autofocus is already on par with Sony, now these 3 are leaving Fuji behind. I think Fuji just don't put enough money on their R&D especially on the AF department. The inconsistency of the Fuji's AF (very lens dependent) is very annoying and shouldn't happen. Even with adapted lenses, Sony/Nikon's AF is still doing much better than Fuji.

Why I’m sticking with Fuji. Number one reason is the small size and the lower cost lens prices. Also the auto focus is quite improved from where it used to be. You can improve that with the newer linear motor lenses. Also I use limit focus on the slower lenses. Too much invested in switching systems, as I’m more concerned with getting the image and I can do that with this camera. Too much time spent comparing cameras and less shooting! I’m actually more interested in Fuji making a large format camera with a fixed lens of a 24 mm like the x100v. But I liked the review! 🖖

Frames, a better comparison is Sony A7C II vs Zf, A7C II is an upgraded A7 IV, Zf is upgraded Z6 II. I don’t think Nikon should do a Z lens with physical aperture stops, they could design some sort of haptic feel to the control ring or a digital sound when it is set for aperture use. What I would love for Nikon to do on the video stabilization area, is to make that as close to a gimbal like experience as possible. Sony’s Dynamic stabilization on the ZV-E1 and newer bodies are paving the way to what’s possible. Sure, it’s labeled as a vlogging camera but it carries a full frame sensor. The Zf has newer tech than other Nikon cameras and that would have been a really competitive feature to pull in more young buyers. I like what Nikon has done with the Zf but, compared to the tech in Sony’s (not buying it) A7C II for video use, it shows Nikon still has some things to improve. I’m on the fence with the Zf, love the new features and tech introduced in it, don’t like that the grip isn’t bigger and you need to add aftermarket accessory to it and the screen doesn’t open up fully, from the back of the camera. I think Canon and maybe Sony has some screens that does this, minor thig but, annoying. Had my hands on one the other day and I had the FX30 with me, which has a similar flip forward screen and I thought the port cover may have not have been closed properly. I miss my A7R V’s multi-angle screen, Nikon, give us that sort of screen on the Z6 III, please! Great video frames!

You clearly do not know how to properly use the Fuji camera. I’m still using the X-T3 and I have NEVER missed so many shots. I’ve used the camera for sports, wildlife, portraits, and events. The only other possibility is that you have an agenda that you are trying to promote with this video.

😆😆 Honestly, you are funny. Fuji AF in low light (1/250, ISO 3200) isn’t that good.

However if you stop clenching down on your butt cheeks so hard when you speak, your videos would be inherently better. 🥔

I agree. For some it’s not a conceivable comparison. Very high number of people like us are dumb. Sorry you have to live with it with your superiority intact.
